Death's Kingdom
Scarecrow-883 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Chief of Neurosurgeons, Dr. Stegman (Bruce Davison)is on the warpath, his mission to send Sally Druse (Diane Ladd) packing, believing her to be "leeching" off of Kingdom Hospital, a kook who has been admitted to the hospital over 16 times over the past two years. Neurosurgeon Dr. Hook (Andrew McCarthy) is against Sally's discharging, but is powerless to stop it because Stegman is in charge of his floor. Peter (Jack Coleman), much to his horror, learns that his room is being shared with the very man who sent him to the hospital to begin with but is unable to tell his wife Natalie (Suki Kaiser)—how awful that must be, unable to tell those around you that the man who hit you with his van is right across the room from you in the other bed! Meanwhile, Dr. Elmer (Jamie Harrold) arranges a special dinner for his crush, the older Dr. Lona Massingale (Sherry Miller) who has gone out of her way to tell him she is not interested in any romance. Sally will try to convince Hook that there's a little girl haunting the hospital and that there's an evil that has been awakened. Too bad Sally's séance was interrupted by Stegman, quite happy to get rid of her from the hospital. This episode, "Death's Kingdom", further elaborates just how grouchy an asshole Stegman is. You can just sense that Stegman and Hook will have an explosive showdown eventually as they push each others buttons. Regarding Dave Hooman (Ryan Robbins), he is so high, he's on the roof with all these medicated patches, a hammer about to use it for repairing shingles, makes a Freudian slip to a policeman questioning him about his whereabouts at the time Peter was hit, and decides to leap off in an attempt to commit suicide. Because Dave is responsible for Peter's predicament, you had to figure he was in for a rude awakening. What is neat about this storyline thread is how similar Dave's condition is to Peter's regarding the injuries to bones, spine, and brain. The anteater shows up, with Dave seeing it this time, resulting in quite a surprising moment where the bedridden junkie gets a "bite taken out of him". This episode essentially continues the story threads from the previous movie, building on the quirks of the characters presented. Once again, Baxley and company utilize odd camera placements and angles to create a disorienting experience, telling us that Kingdom Hospital is no ordinary medical hospital through visual means. One running gag has poor Hook not knowing his fly was open, talking to an embarrassed Natalie about her husband's condition, eventually told by Sally he needs to zip his pants!
