What's with the final two episodes?
markfranh7 July 2020
Like the other reviewers of series 5, the series ended for me at the conclusion of episode 8. What was going on with episodes 9 and 10?

Jonas suddenly gets a new girlfriend. Jonas suddenly starts getting suspicious of new girlfriend. Jonas gets advice on new girlfriend. Jonas dumps girlfriend. Er. Where did this all come from? All of that in two unnecessary episodes and it just felt like that they were 20 minutes short of plot so had to put in some filler.

What happened to "Sylvain" who was last seen I think if episode 7 on his way to Seoul and then disappears and I'm not sure was even referenced after that.

The Mille Sabords plot was well developed in the first six or so episodes as he makes his away around the mid-east and then he's told to be a good boy and not worry so much about Paul and then never seen again. What?

Yes, the developments with Marie-Jeanne worth going into in episode 10 as it was nice to see her fate resolved before the series ended.

Nice to see Henri back in the dream sequence to conclude the series but all in all, they could have ended it back at the end of episode 8 and we all put in much more satisfied with the way it wrapped up.

Disappointing end to a great 5 seasons of one of the best shows France has ever produced.

Something is definitely wrong here
searchanddestroy-120 May 2020
I have already said it, this series has mch much potential, but something is missing. yes, missing. A topic speaking of secret agents, clandestine work for the government, undercover missions, should involve more, MORE CRIMINAL elements, such as hush hush orders to kill. I don't ask for a James Bond flick, HELL NO!! but for something more suspensful, more tragic or bloody. You may have, in reality, secret agents preparing or executing killing missions, you know. Here, it is only quelstion of love stories, manipulations, treasons, talk, talk. I don't know if it is Jacques Audiard's fault, I am not sure it is, the other seasons were ore or less the same. I get really bored with this still amazing show. What a shame, what a waste.

Haunting, Beautiful End
waltersbilly19 October 2020
I've loved this show for years. The users upset with the ending of S5 I think wanted more plot. But we've had a lot of plot. Now we get to see the effects on his psyche, and it's done in a fascinating, creative, and hauntingly beautiful way IMO. (Agree on the side plots in last 2 eps being sub-par and not up to the main event's caliber, though.)

Perfect Greek tragedy ending
lars-34013 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's clear that the Eric had run out of creative steam and had to turn over the ending to a fresh director. The new director cuts out the Hollywood characters and bores to the hart of the series; "WTF have the Western powers to do in the Middle East, the ruin of Western raison d'etre. Accordingly they get their asses handed back to them.

The ending is an absolutely perfect Greek tragedy ending. Malotru and Jonas who had destroyed so many lives get themselves destroyed but has to live on, crushed. All the other seasons are clever spy plots, very good for young adults, but Season 5, e9-10 are Greek drama. Well done Audiard.

Audiard killed the spirit of a Perfect Show !
BernhardtFrance17 May 2020
As so many other fans of the series I was extremely disappointed to see the last two episodes of this season. Episode seven and eight were among the best ever done for this show - which is definitely one of the best European TV shows This season could have ended with the eighth episode (maybe with another 10 minutes to tell the content of ep07 & 08) in a glorious way. Unfortunately it did not. These last two episodes were totally pointless. No more interesting storytelling. And the totally new side-plot with Jonas didn't Fit in the picture and didn't push the story further. They'd better cut it out or it could have been integrated from the beginning of season 5 on - but not added at the end. What a pity. Audiard's (which I admire for some of his great pictures) artistic" direction really didn't match the spirit of the series. Psycho-Trauma, No suspense. But the "bureau des legendes" remain remarkable as a show.

.. but this did not play out very well.

For me, this series ended in s05e08.

I wish you had wanted to own your lovely little story yourself, Eric.

Disappointing end!
bowedeclan23 June 2020
What happened here? Was it change of Director? Script etc.. anyway its been a rather disappointing ending to what's been one of the best series of all time, I have never followed or enjoyed a series as much, it seemed to have everything spies, traitors, war mongers, oh and a love story thrown n fr the women, this final season didn't seem to know where it was going, Paul only appeared n episode 2 and it just dragged along, I kept waiting fr something to happen and it did but not until episode 8, then I thought finally this is it now its going to finish n a blaze of glory, but know it slowed right back down again and just plodded along until the finish, as for the ending well the less said about that the better, very poor climax and finish to what's been the best spy thriller ever.....

Why?!?!?!?!?!?!
ursulabearsmile3 September 2020
Just why. My heart is broken. And in addition, the stories of the two agents abroad were abandoned with no resolution for new storylines. Even if there is a 6th season, I will never forgive the writers for what they did in the last 5 minutes of this episode. Just come on now!!! Let Malatrou have a little happiness for heaven's sake!!! No idea where a plot for season 6 would go anyhow. Can't stand watching Malatrou in pain anymore.

MAJOR plottholes ends a show about getting all the details right.
simon-yemane21 May 2021
Very disappointing. Malutrou looking for a "bomb" but NEVER seeing his daughter or girlfriend as target? And this murderer knows what time and place to go how? Kennedy is free to roam around and make plans freely why?

I could go on but what is the point.

What a strange last two episodes
thekimberley14 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I basically loved all the episodes of the 5 series and i was so looking forward to an epic series finale a la homeland and sorts. But what was this? This was boring and totally out of character series wise. Well ok... there was one dramatic event but you could see that coming from miles. Even malotru himself predicted that there would be an act of revenge on him and it would hurt where it really hurts. So the smartest spy out there, who was always as carefull as could be, did not prevent the killing of the love of his live. But why all these unimportant side stories in the last two episodes. They came from nothing and when into nothing. And some of the spies in the field had no proper ending at all. What was this all about. I gave the whole series a 9 but the last two episodes not more then a 4.

Fantastic show right up until the last episode. Drops a +10 for the series down to 9.
doubtitall18 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I don't mind a show that has a terrible twist at the end, and I don't mind a show that has a wonderful Pollyanna resolution to a dark story. If it is well done, meaning it fits the characters, that's great.

The last episode of season 5 was just stupid. Yes, that is the only word for it: Stupid. It imagines a brilliant spy of Malotru's caliber would have missed something so incredibly obvious once he already realized Karlov would hit at him from beyond the grave.

Once realizing that danger, there is no way the Malotru character would have failed for even a half second to see HOW Karlov would hit him. If it took even the non-spy viewer any longer than that to see the danger to Malotru's loved ones, they just weren't paying attention.

Why didn't someone stop this tragedy? I mean someone in the making of that episode.

Someone, an actor, the director. Maybe even the janitor, ANYBODY should have said, "That's wildly out of character. People will think it's stupid. Rewrite it., for the love of Pete."

Great way to ruin a series with the last 2 episodes which did not make any sense at all.

Completely lost!
mikehaldenby28 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Having loved all the previous series, I never managed to follow the plot of series 5 and was confused throughout. Series 5 was for me the least enjoyable; and as for the last two episodes, I rather enjoyed #9 as it enabled me to get my breath back. But the Bunuel- inspired arty farty style was so at odds with the rest of the show that I suspect they ran out of ideas and had to cobble something together for the last 2 episodes. Dream sequences always suggest despeartion. It certainly seems that way. Two (at least) storylines left unresolved....I'd have prefererred to find out what happened to Sylvain.

Horrible directing. Worst then Mexican soap operas. Killed an amazing show. Bureau finished at episode 8. Such a waste. Total shame.
