The Dragon Ball franchise has amassed a large fanbase over the years and Hollywood had its eye on adapting the popular franchise in live-action. There were a lot of expectations and with the negative track record of manga adaptations on the big screen, it was a big responsibility that 20th Century Fox and director James Wong took with the film.

Have you ever taken a moment to consider the sheer effort required by an actor to transform into a beloved character, when the stakes are astronomically high? Canadian actor Justin Chatwin, 41, embarked on such an odyssey, enduring intense physical training and delving deeply into the character of Goku that millions hold dear.
Despite Dragonball Evolution meeting with less than stellar reception, the actor’s earlier interview reveals the grueling workouts that he endured. Since its 2009 release, James Wong’s Dragonball: Evolution has consistently caused dissatisfaction among fans of the franchise.
But even though the anime is a huge fan favorite that practically everyone enjoys, its first and only live-action adaptation of Dragon Ball to date, which starred Chatwin in the lead role (Goku), fell short of expectations.

The Dragon Ball saga has left fans mesmerized to the core through the original manga created by Akira Toriyama sensei and the anime adaptations that followed. However, despite being such a massive fan-favorite that almost everyone loves, the story failed to deliver perfectly in its first and last Hollywood live-action adaptation to date from 2009, which starred Justin Chatwin in the lead.
Dragonball Evolution (2009).
In fact, one of the most hated and criticized elements of the Dragonball Evolution film was the fact that Chatwin was chosen to play Son Goku, whose performance also didn’t sit well with fans. But that wasn’t the worst part, for from the plot elements to the superpowers to the way the animated characters were brought to life, Db fans were met with the worst nightmare of their imagination.

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Akira Toriyama, Canadian actor Justin Chatwin, known for his role as Goku in Dragonball Evolution, the 2009 Hollywood adaptation of Dragonball manga, apologized for messing up the film.
“Rest in peace, brother. And sorry we messed up that adaptation so badly,” Chatwin wrote in his tribute to Toriyama which was shared on his Instagram story.
Chatwin’s message reflects the widespread disappointment among fans and creators alike over the botched adaptation of Toriyama’s Dragonball manga.
Dragonball Evolution, which was produced by 20th Century Fox, faced significant backlash for its departure from the source material, including poor writing, acting, production values, among others.
Notably, the film opted for a modern American high school setting over the fantasy/sci-fi elements integral to the original narrative, leading to accusations of whitewashing and cultural insensitivity.

Anime, the Japanese style of hand-drawn animation, is widely popular around the globe. Manga artist Akira Toriyama played an instrumental role in its widespread renown, as he gifted the world pieces such as Dr. Slump and Dragonball, the latter being his most popular work to date.
Akira Toriyama’s manga have been successfully adapted in the past. Dragon Ball was the anime that caught the imagination of the Western world. It has been subsequently adapted into cartoons and even a live-action film, Dragonball Evolution.
However, when Hollywood tried to wade into his rich world, the result left the artist extremely dissatisfied, and the film based on Goku’s life failed miserably. The creator, Akira Toriyama, increasingly expressed his disappointment with the way Hollywood butchered his carefully crafted world.

The late Manga creator Akira Toriyama was unhappy with Hollywood after the industry ruined the loosely based live-action adaptation of his most famous work, Dragon Ball. It was Toriyama’s work that made the anime genre popular in the West. Toriyama, like any other Dragon Ball fan, had criticized the 2009 film starring Justin Chatwin and Emmy Rossum, Dragon Ball: Evolution.

Anime and manga live-action adaptations, especially English-language ones, have a mixed track record. For every "One Piece" and "Speed Racer," which manage to capture the endless imagination of the medium, there are thrice as many "Dragonball Evolution" and "Ghost in the Shell" bad movies that nearly ruin their source material.
One of the best ones is not really based on an anime or manga — though it is quite clear that "Akira" was a huge influence — Josh Trank and Max Landis' "Chronicle." The film is set in Seattle and follows three teens who acquire telekinetic powers. Soon enough, the fun and games turn dark and deadly when one of them begins to lose control and relish in their power. Film and television adaptations of stories from other media consistently face uphill battles. Even the most faithful of adaptations can ruffle the feathers of the source material’s die-hard fans or lead audiences to question the point of the adaptation in the first place. As a school of adaptation, the live-action take on anime and manga is only slightly less cursed than the live-action series or film based on a video game. Yet remarkably, 2023 is set to be a banner year for both. In January, HBO premiered “The Last of Us,” the hit drama that takes the same somber, character-driven approach to a zombie apocalypse as the 2013 game. With rave reviews, major ratings and a raft of Emmy nominations, “The Last of Us” successfully bucked a multi-decade trend. A few months later, “The Super Mario Bros.” movie would repeat the feat at the box office, if not quite with critics.
Netflix may have eyed this trend with some interest as the global streaming service has prepared the launch of “One Piece,” a series adapted from the long-running manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Similar undertakings have a checkered history, a fact Netflix itself...

In the decades since Japanese animation broke through to the mainstream of Western pop culture, Hollywood has been eager to mine it for precious content. It's not hard to see why. Anime has offered us some of the most fascinating, creatively striking, and challenging entertainment of the past fifty years. Consider the cyberpunk body horror ambitions of "Akira," the space Western melancholy of "Cowboy Bebop," or the astonishing achievements of Studio Ghibli. Anime has exploded in popularity in recent years, in large part thanks to greater accessibility to the material via streaming platforms like Crunchyroll. One such series that has broken through in a major way is "One Piece," a comedy-action saga about warring bands of pirates that is almost as beloved in America as it is in Japan.

Now that The Flash has hit theaters to reset the DC Universe, Awfully Good Movies is running back in time to watch the debut film for one of The Flash’s breakout characters, Helen Slater in 1984’s Supergirl!
In between the disappointment of Superman III and the catastrophe of Superman IV, original franchise producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind decided to switch focus from the Man of Steel to his female cousin Kara Zor-El with an in-universe spinoff that’d have a cameo from Christopher Reeve himself to mentor his fellow Kryptonian and star Helen Slater in the young actress’ debut role. But after Reeve turned the film down before filming, and Warner Bros. grew so fed up with the Salkinds that they sold the distribution rights back to them, Supergirl would instead flop so hard at the box office that the Salkinds just gave up on the Superman film rights altogether,...

In this very special “Viewer Request” episode of Awfully Good Movies, we’re finally tackling what could well be the worst live-action anime adaptation that Hollywood’s ever made, with 2009’s Dragonball Evolution!
When 20th Century Fox bought up the rights to Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga that became an even more beloved anime TV series, with Stephen Chow of Kung Fu Hustle set to produce, Dbz fans were simultaneously skeptical and hopeful of what the Americanized results would be. But when the movie was rushed into production on the cusp of a writer’s strike, with a writer and director who didn’t know anime from Animorphs, and the reported $100 million budget reduced to $30 million, the final product made Dragon Ball fans and casual viewers both explode in rage much like Son Goku himself.

Plot: When a goddess of war reincarnates in the body of a young girl, street orphan Seiya discovers that he is destined to protect her and save the world. But only if he can face his own past and become a Knight of the Zodiac.
Review: Live-action adaptations of anime films and series have succeeded in Japan, but few have overcome the transition to Hollywood. For every Alita Battle Angel, there is a Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Evolution, and Death Note. The cultural barrier aside, there has never been the right balance between ambition and execution. Sony’s Knights of the Zodiac is a valiant attempt to bring the Saint Seiya anime to life with a modest budget and recognizable actors just below the A-list. The result is a visually impressive movie with some franchise potential that ends up being squandered by a bland screenplay that barely scratches...

This was supposed to be the first “business as usual” summer movie season after Covid. Then the WGA strike came.
The Hollywood writers’ strike effects on TV were swift and obvious, like the shuttering of late-night television. The effects on the movies could play out over a far longer timetable, insidiously bleeding an already wounded industry.
Everyone agrees, with a few specific exceptions, that moviegoers returning to theaters won’t see the strike. “The movies for 2023 and 2024 have pretty much been written. In many cases, they’ve already been filmed,” AMC CEO Adam Aron noted Friday on his company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts. He was just the latest in a string of executives to reassure Wall Street of the strike’s limited impact.

Velma’s fan rating is worse than Dragonball: Evolution. It’s not an opinion; unfortunately, it’s a fact backed up by IMDb stats. This has also been noted in many different reaction videos that aren’t always factored into such matters. There was a lot of hope for Velma, and it appears that there still is. Many people are believing that the show will get a second season. But there are many who are simply irritated by the direction it’s taken. The lack of Scooby-Doo is one element that a lot of people don’t like. But the acerbic nature that the main character

2022 has been another big year for anime and manga in the United States. This fall's "Chainsaw Man" anime is earning rave reviews. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" earned 32 million worldwide in its first week. Netflix's "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" convinced folks to give the messy "Cyberpunk 2077" another shot, rocketing the game up the Steam rankings. On the manga front, the blockbuster success of Junji Ito has led publishers to take chances on other horror artists like Kazuo Umezu and Kanako Inuki. There's even a fledgling indie manga movement in the United States, with small publishers like Glacier Bay Books and Star Fruit Books distributing titles that might never otherwise see the light of day. We're long past the time of executives chopping up anime series in the editing docket to be marketable to American children. Anime and manga are now respected in their own right, if only because it sells.

Fighting games cannot subsist on colorful characters alone. Every fighter needs a few special moves to act as a calling card and set themselves apart from the rest of the roster. While Street Fighter is full of such special moves, the Hadōken and Shōryūken are really the two Street Fighter abilities that have entered the upper echelons of pop culture.
It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know about, or has at least seen, a Hadōken or Shōryūken. Even though the moves are primarily associated with the characters Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Sakura, those attacks are so iconic that they are used as shorthand for Street Fighter references in other media. Audiences who have never played a round of Street Fighter more than likely know about the Hadōken or Shōryūken thanks to references in shows like Family Guy and Gravity Falls.
Those references are fun and all, but...

Sydney-based Odin’s Eye Animation has secured sales of kids’ TV series “The Beachbuds” to Disney Japan and ABC Australia. Other territories are under negotiation at the MipTV market in Cannes.
“The Beachbuds” is a 52-episode x 11’ animated series set in Zoobak Resort, a fictional tropical island paradise with the funniest feathered friends. With a target demographic of 6 to 11-year-olds “The Beachbuds” teaches kids about harmony, hospitality and humor, so no matter what happens everyone can have their best day ever.
The series is produced by J-Toon Productions, a U.S. and Indonesian firm, established in 2013 by industrialist and minerals magnate Jimmy Budiarto, and Montreal-based producer-distributor Syon Media. The producers previously negotiated a license deal for Southeast Asia, where the series is now available on Disney Plus Hotstar.
The series is directed by George Samilski with writers including Primetime Emmy-winner Steven Banks, Ken Goin and John R. Morey (“Family Guy”).

Hollywood has a pretty rough track record when it comes to turning anime titles into live-action films so far. "Speed Racer" and "Dragonball Evolution" were both critical and box office failures when they released in the late 2000s, although the former has gained wider appreciation over the years from those who feel the world simply wasn't ready for the Wachowskis' sensory-overloading, anti-capitalist tentpole when it first came out. The 2017 live-action "Ghost in the Shell" movie, on the other hand, is remembered as little more than the poster child for U.S. film studios white-washing Asian anime properties, while the Netflix-backed live-action "Death Note" (which...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock over the past couple of months, the live-action anime, Cowboy Bebop, has officially been canceled by Netflix after a one-season run. The latest adaptation of the classic anime was met with mixed reactions; however, the key thing is that Cowboy Bebop follows a string of anime stories that have failed to resonate with American audiences. Films such as Dragon Ball: Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, and Death Note are just some of the adaptations that have come and gone with disastrous efforts, and that’s mainly due to Hollywood not understanding the appeal of

Despite AT&T CEO John Stankey’s victory lap today about WarnerMedia’s theatrical and HBO Max release strategy with Godzilla vs. Kong, the studio’s R-rated title, Mortal Kombat, is facing a serious threat at the weekend box office from a traditional theatrical release and rival Asian IP, Funimation/Aniplex of America’s Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train.
