The Northwest Film Forum has announced Mirta Desir as the awardee of its fourth annual Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” grant.
Desir, a Haitian American, is producing her first narrative feature film “Angie.” She will receive an unrestricted award of $25,000 to support the making of her film, which she describes as a “love letter to Latin American artists and Haitians’ oral history — a marriage of human drama and the power of Voudou.” For Desir, the grant was “an amazing source of support for women filmmakers.”
“‘Angie’ is a story that I am compelled to tell. It is based on two things: Haiti’s historical interconnectedness with Voudou and my love for my younger sister, who died too young,” Desir said. “Through the lens of magical realism, ‘Angie’ explores the bond between sisters and its power to overcome the worst of circumstances. Shout! Studios has acquired the North American rights to “Language Lessons,” a love story starring and directed by Natalie Morales and also starring Mark Duplass.
“Parks and Rec” star Morales made her directorial debut on “Language Lessons,” which made its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival before snagging an audience award for Morales at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Shout! plans to release the film across all platforms, beginning with a theatrical release later this year.
Duplass and Morales also co-wrote the screenplay, which is about a man whose husband surprises him with weekly Spanish lessons. When tragedy strikes in his life, his Spanish teacher becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed, leading him to develop an unexpected and complicated emotional bond with her.

Shout! Studios has acquired North American rights to the platonic love story “Language Lessons” from Duplass Brothers Productions, following a competitive bidding situation. The news comes on the heels of the movie’s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and its Audience Award win at the SXSW Film Festival.
“Language Lessons” marks the feature directorial debut of Natalie Morales. It stars and was written by Mark Duplass and Morales, and was produced by Mel Eslyn.
The film follows Adam (Duplass), whose husband surprises him with a gift of a year’s worth of weekly Spanish lessons. But when tragedy strikes, his teacher, Cariño (Morales), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed and the two develop an unexpected and complicated emotional bond.
Shot in secret during the pandemic with a skeleton crew in Los Angeles and Costa Rica, “Language Lessons’ ” exploration of long-distance connection is both of its time and timeless.

Above: Alternative and official UK posters for Parasite. Designers: Andrew Bannister (left) and La Boca (right). It’s been far too long since I last did one of these round-ups: nine months to be exact. A lot has changed in the world over that time of course, the most pertinent to this column being that far fewer new posters have premiered recently, and that the distractions and stresses of our current situation have led to me posting less frequently than I usually do.But, as I’ve been doing for many years, I have tallied up the most popular posters featured on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram (previously Tumblr) and by a long shot the most popular posts of the past nine months were for the two U.K. Parasite posters above. Arte France, a bastion of quality European TV, is looking to make its French series ever less French , as it consolidates its position as one of Europe’s most internationally-minded TV operators.
Early fruit of that drive, “No Man’s Land,” – “in microcosm, and in a thriller format, what we’re trying to do in general,” Olivier Wotling, Arte France’s head of drama, told Variety – was selected for main competition at Series Mania. Had the TV festival taken place in Lille, it would surely have been a strong contender for its best series prize.
“No Man’s Land’s” main stars are French: Félix Moati, who plays initially dapper Parisian construction engineer Antoine, and Melanie Thierry. A lead producer is most certainly French, Paris-based Haut et Court, the reputed producer of “Les Revenants,” “The Last Panthers” and “The New Pope.”

The Golden Era: The 1950s and 1960s
The next two decades witnessed Bengali cinema at its best, with a never before coming together of exceptional directors, actors and technicians, a willingness to experiment with forms, techniques and content, and nuanced understanding and application of film techniques. Fittingly enough, the era began with Nemai Ghosh’s Chinnamul (The Uprooted, made in 1951), which despite certain aesthetic glitches, is a telling document of partition and a landmark in the growth of socially conscious cinema in India. Hemen Gupta’s Bhuli Nai (We Shall not Forget) and ’42 (1942), both made in the late 1940s but releasing only in the 1950s, were entirely original subject matters that owed themselves to the director’s experiences as a freedom fighter and were remarkable for the director’s uncompromising sincerity. Natalie Morales’ character on the new NBC sitcom “Abby’s” is believed to be the first bisexual lead on a primetime sitcom. But Morales notes that it’s not the character’s defining characteristic.
“It’s one of the many things about her but it doesn’t define our show,” she told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “I’ve been really lucky in my acting career thus far, my characters have just happened to be Latina, they’re never about that. While we need representation in general in many fields I happen to belong to some of, it does annoy me that a lot of the time when we get representation it’s given to us by people who are trying to fill a category. Natalie Morales is known for scene stealing work on television series such as “The Middleman,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Grinder” and “Santa Clarita Diet” but now she is stepping into the spotlight as the lead and titular character on new NBC sitcom “Abby’s.”
What does being the lead of a show in today’s television landscape mean to you?
I have this great opportunity that people like me haven’t traditionally had — literally never. I’m the first Cuban female lead of a network sitcom. I don’t take that lightly. But as far as the No. 1 on the call sheet thing, the responsibility I see there is to the people I work with — the crew and the cast. Everybody says the fish rots from the head down, and it’s so true. I’ve been very, very lucky to work on really great shows with really great people...

“Abby’s is filmed in front of a live outdoor audience,” co-star Neil Flynn says at the start of each episode of this charming new NBC comedy about an unlicensed bar run by the title character (Natalie Morales) in her backyard. (It’s shot on the same studio back lot as Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives.) The announcement signals the DNA of the series: a hybrid of old-school and new-school sitcom aesthetics.
On the one hand, Abby’s has that live audience, which it feeds with your standard set-up/punchline rhythms.

Mipdrama Buyers’ Summit: Scale, Comedy, Noir
European drama serie production continues to scale up, is driving ever more into comedy, while Nordic Noir’s is still going international, if the selection of 10 productions at this year’s MipDrama Buyers’ Summit is anything to go by. Meanwhile, established players are driving ever more into drama series production.
Produced by Mammoth Screen, BBC One’s “World on Fire,” an epic drama about ordinary people in early WWII starring Sean Bean and Helen Hunt, weighs in as the Summit’s biggest series.
Also to be pitched via 15 minutes of extracts, however, is Norwegian broadcaster Nrk’s “Atlantic Crossing,” charting the relationship between Norway’s Crown Princess Märtha and Franklin D. Roosevelt (Kyle Maclachan).
Nordic Noir continues its global roll-out with Kiwi Noir – crime thriller “The Gulf,” chronicling a woman cop’s moral disintegration, another MipDrama entry – and Ukrainian Noir: Missing child crime drama-thriller “Hide and Seek.

“Dark Matter” (Syfy)
The “Dark Matter” TV series came years after the debut of the Dark Horse comic book it’s based on, but creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie originally conceived of the series — about six individuals who wake up on a starship together with their memories wiped — as a TV show before it was redeveloped as a comic in 2012.

Syfy has a number of science fiction series based on lesser known comic book titles, including the fan-favorite “Wynonna Earp,” starring Melanie Scrofano as the demon-fighting descendent of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp.

Panama City — Cuban Reggaeton documentary “En La Caliente,” won the $10,000 first prize and a trip to this year’s Cannes Film Market in the 4th Primera Mirada pix-in-post sidebar.
Omnibus film “Dias de Luz” was awarded the $5,000 second prize.
“Caliente” focuses on Rubén Cuesta Palomo (aka Candyman), Cuba’s best known reggaeton artist in the early 2000s.
“Now he’s like a king without a crown. Nobody listens to him any more,” said producer Alejandro Tovar. “Maybe it’s because he’s too political. Maybe he was ahead of his time.”
The Primera Mirada jury enjoyed the pic’s playful spirit and its exploration of issues of class and race and the differences between high and low art, including the Cuban Institute of Music’s ambivalent attitude towards reggaeton.

A year after the Election That Shocked The World, Donald Trump has permeated almost every ounce of popular culture — especially television. Just about everything on the small screen these days ends up being interpreted through a political lens. Even things that once weren’t politicized have now been thrust into that world.
That’s probably not surprising, given that the President of the United States is someone who has been obsessed with ratings, and winning an Emmy, over the years. He’s someone who spends all day consuming — and tweeting about — cable TV news, and often treats big announcements like he’s revealing the winner on “The Apprentice.” And that’s led to real-life storylines that would be dismissed as too outlandish or unbelievable if they were actually written on the page.
“This election happens and you have to reevaluate everything,” “Royal Pains” executive producer Michael Rauch said this summer...

Natalie Morales is speaking out against a photographer who manufactured a “wardrobe malfunction” by taking upskirt photos of her on the red carpet of “Battle of the Sexes.” Morales stars in the film as tennis player Rosie Casals and attended the September 16 premiere in Los Angeles where the incident occurred. The actress took to Twitter to explain what really happened, and although she doesn’t say the photographer by name, she does powerfully explain her side of the story.
“So someone sent me photos of me having what they called a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ at last weekend’s premiere of Battle of the Sexes, which was one of the happiest moments of my life thus far,” Morales tweeted.

It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science-fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pin down exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we turned to one unimpeachable source as a guide for what we should include in our list.
Thanks, Roman.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.
Given the wealth of shows in this genre, we opted not to include animated or unscripted series in this particular list.

Donald Trump inadvertently got Hollywood writers an improved contract this year.
It sure wasn’t through anything he actually did on behalf of TV and feature scribes. But the resistance that began to pop up after Trump’s election inspired writers to demand a better deal from the studios, according to several showrunners on Friday at the Atx Television Festival.
Gathered on stage to discuss how Trump is impacting the world of storytelling, Beau Willimon (“House of Cards,” “The First”) mentioned his role on the Writers Guild of America negotiation committee, and how members became more motivated post-Trump.

Hollywood missed an opportunity to support free speech when the world was piling on Kathy Griffin last week.
That was the feeling among several major showrunners and TV producers on stage Friday morning at an Atx Television Festival panel. Griffin was widely criticized by both the right and the left, including many in Hollywood, for a photo shoot in which she held a bloodied pumpkin head made to look like Donald Trump.
“What Kathy Griffin did, whether you like it or not, is a piece of political art,” said Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“The Middleman,” Netflix’s upcoming “The Dark Crystal”). “For politically conscious art it was fairly mercenary and kind of banal but she did it, and we have to defend her right to do that. Or we will not be able to do much more milk-toast crap that is much less defensive than what she did.”

Austin, Texas — A day after the nation was captivated by the James Comey hearings, some of TV’s top producers gathered at the Atx Television Festival to discuss the effects of Trump’s presidency on their storytelling.
The “Television in a Trumped Up America” panel, which was moderated by Michael Schneider, IndieWire’s executive editor and Variety’s editor-at-large, featured Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“The Middleman”), Michael Rauch, Julie Plec, Beau Willimon, Liz Tigelaar (“Casual”), and Paul Garnes.
“It’s become a negotiation in terms of what you’re able to do as an artist creatively in terms of being able to hold a mirror up to society,” said Willimon. “But that process is not immediate. It takes time.” He added, “Whether you support Trump or not, it’s still a traumatic event for the country in terms of the schisms. We will be contending with those ripples for decades to come.

Another, “The Revival of the Socially Conscious Sitcom,” will examine the recent growth of comedies aiming to recapture the progressive spirit of Norman Lear.
Liz Tigelaar (“Casual”), Monica Owusu-Breen (“Midnight, Texas”), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“The Middleman”), and Michael Rauch (“Royal Pains”) are on board for the Trump panel, while Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (“The Carmichael Show”), Bob Daily (“Superior Donuts”), Justin Simien (“Dear White People”), and Mike Royce and Gloria Calderon-Kellett (“One Day at a Time”) are set to join the sitcom panel. If you’ve been missing Sydney Bristow, better book a ticket to Austin, TX. The Atx Television Festival announced today it will be hosting an “Alias” writers’ room reunion featuring many of the show’s long-time scribes, including Ken Olin, Lawrence Trilling, Sarah Caplan, Monica Breen, Jeff Pinkner, Andre Nemec, and Josh Appelbaum.
Creator J.J. Abrams has yet to be confirmed, but additional panelists will be announced at a later date. Last year, the Atx Festival hosted a writers’ room reunion for “The O.C.” that included creator Josh Schwartz.
Also announced this afternoon was a “Parks and Recreation” community screening. For the first five seasons of the festival, the Austin-based event celebrated an Austin-based show: “Friday Night Lights.” But last year marked the final tailgate party / community screening for the beloved series, and festival programmers found a more than fitting replacement in “Parks and Recreation.”

Actress Natalie Morales has been down the one-season wonder path before, as the star of ABC Family's delightful (and woefully mismatched with its own network) The Middleman, then as a supporting player on ABC's Trophy Wife. So when Fox canceled The Grinder last week, Morales didn't wallow in losing another job; she made comic art out of it. Behold, a collection of the Snapchat videos Morales made in the hours after the cancellation, first trying to drink her way through the experience, then literally breaking into the show's production office to claim a few mementos of the experience, all of it ending with a great homage to Jerry Maguire: What I Did When My Show Got Cancelled from natalie morales on Vimeo.

A few months ago, we learned that NBC was planning on reboot the popular '90s sword-and-sandal series Xena: Warrior Princess. Original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are involved in what's being called a "modern reboot," and original star Lucy Lawless has expressed her thoughts on the possibility of a new series.
There hasn't been much in the way of solid, official news on the rebooted series for a while, but NBC has just changed that. Variety reports that the network has hired former Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write and executive produce the series, "which is still in the development stages." So there's still a lot of work to be done before the show hits our TV screens, but at least there's some forward momentum happening here.

NBC's upcoming reboot of "Xena: Warrior Princess" is continuing to add creative power behind-the-scenes, with the news that an original writer from "Lost" has joined the series.
Deadline reports that Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who won an Emmy for "Lost" and also currently serves as co-exec producer of CW series "The 100," has joined the reboot, which he will executive produce alongside original "Xena" creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. In addition to his experience with network shows, Grillo-Marxuach is also the creator of graphic novel series "The Middleman," which was made into a short-lived TV show starring "Parks and Rec" alum Natalie Morales.
Grillo-Marxuach -- who also penned a lengthy, fascinating history of the original "Lost" writers room earlier this year -- confirmed his involvement in the "Xena" project on Twitter, posting a photo of himself with a Xena doll. He noted that he's expecting a daughter soon, and wants to give...

Another baddie has been confirmed for Supergirl’s CBS TV show. Brit Morgan will play Livewire, a journalist-turned-supervillain…
A brief Supergirl update here. Another villain has been added to the ranks – Livewire (real name Leslie), described as “a confident, abrasive and funny shock-jock who works for CatCo Media," the media company where Supergirl (real name Kara) works by day.
At some point in the series, shock-happy journalist Leslie will become a supervillain, when “an accident makes her as dangerous and shocking as her words." Don't worry, we're not getting any ideas.
This will all sound fairly familiar to fans of the Superman animated series from the 1990s, where Livewire – then voiced by Lori Petty – was first introduced. The character was created by Bruce Timm for the animated show, and later co-opted into the main comic book universe in 2006.

Special effects legend Rick Baker formally announced his retirement this week. Baker cited a “cheap and fast” philosophy in the movie industry that was at odds with his desire to ensure things got done right as the catalyst for his retirement. Baker’s work stretches across several prominent films, from An American Werewolf in London to Videodrome to The Rocketeer to Ed Wood to Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes and Tropic Thunder. Baker also worked on the Men in Black films and Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” music video. The 2014 feature Maleficent will now stand as his last work.
Baker will, however, be auctioning off his famous work via The Prop Store, beginning today.
Jessica Chastain and Amy Schumer are poised to work together on a new comedy. The Tracking Board has reported that Chastain, known mostly for her dramatic work in features such as The Tree of Life and Zero Dark Thirty,...

Pete mourns the passing of Trophy Wife, a well-cast, well-written sitcom whose title didn't do it any favours...

Sitcom fans are in mourning this week following the cancellation of one of the sharpest, funniest sitcoms on television. I am, of course, talking about Trophy Wife, one of the more tragic losses of the Great Television Massacre of 2014.
Trophy Wife followed in the footsteps of ABC stablemate Cougar Town in having a needlessly off-putting title. Certainly anyone seeing the title and looking at the show’s two leads - the young and beautiful Malin Akerman, and Bradley Whitford, fifteen years on from The West Wing’s debut - might be inclined to put two and two together and make a borderline-offensive premise.
Nothing could be further from the truth, however; despite the age gap, Akerman and Whitford play one of the happiest, most loving married couples on television - arguably...

Here we go again, the season premiere of Game of Thrones managed to crash HBO Go. Not too long ago, the app crashed when people tried to use it to watch the season finale of True Detective.
Speaking of Game of Thrones, how about that Red Viper? (There are spoilers at the link, of course.) After the initial thrill faded, it felt like the status quo for me.
I don’t have many complaints about looking at Pedro Pascal, at least.
FX has signed a big deal with the creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The deal includes two more seasons of Sunny (which will make it cable’s longest-running live-action comedy, in terms of seasons), an order for a new series starring Tracy Morgan (from all three Sunny creators) as well as ordering three scripts for potential comedy series. Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany will be on Parks and Recreation this season, playing a love interest for Aziz Ansari's Tom Haverford. According to THR, she'll be in the fifth and sixth episodes of the season, which are currently scheduled to air at the end of October. This means, within the nerdiverse, Tom will have dated The Middleman's Natalie Morales and clone-lady extraordinaire Maslany. Maybe Rent-a-Swag is more alluring than we thought.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

Syfy unveiled a big slate of projects in development Wednesday (April 10). It includes series projects from "Hannibal" and "Pushing Daisies" creator Bryan Fuller, "The Middleman's" Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Robert Zemeckis and ... Jamie Foxx, who's behind a new horror series at the cable channel.
Foxx will executive produce, direct and write for an untitled horror anthology series set to premiere in October. Syfy name-checks "Tales From the Crypt" and "The Twilight Zone" in describing the show, which will feature "creepy morality tales" based on ideas like envy and superficiality. Other writers on the show include Mike Ferris ("Terminator 3," "The Game") and John E. Pogue ("Everwood").
Some of the other projects in development at Syfy:
"High Moon": Fuller and fellow "Hannibal" writer-producer Jim Danger Gray are behind an adaptation of the novel "The Lotus Caves" by John Christopher. Mining colonies on the moon are plunged into chaos when miners discover a new form of life.

The single-camera project revolves around a reformed party girl, Kate (27 Dresses‘ Malin Akerman), who finds herself in an insta-family when she falls for a man (The West Wing‘s Bradley Whitford) with three manipulative kids and two judgmental ex-wives (played by Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins). "The Big Bang Theory" universe is expanding a little more with the promotion of one of its recurring actors to series regular.
Kevin Sussman, who plays comic-shop manager Stuart on the CBS comedy, has been upped to a regular role, Deadline reports. He likely won't appear in every episode this season, but fans can expect to see more of Stuart.
Sussman has appeared in 15 "Big Bang" episodes over the past four seasons, including six in 2011-12. His character played a key role in making Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) a couple. When Stuart asked Amy out in "The Flaming Spittoon Acquisition," it made Sheldon realize he wanted to make things official.
Sussman's other credits include a run on "Ugly Betty" and guest roles on "Weeds," "The Mentalist" and "The Middleman," as well as the movies "Wet Hot American Summer," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "AI: Artificial Intelligence."

Excellent, we absolutely do not have enough space in our lives right now, and in particular, not enough space-based series. We are loving all of the fantasy and horror shows that have been happily added to our viewing schedules, but where’s the love for space? We need more space!
Fortunately, Deadline is reporting that Syfy is developing a swashbuckling space drama/adventure entitled Clandestine. The show follows a group who hold themselves out to be part of an intergalactic fleet, when in fact they are mercenaries. So they’re acting in a clandestine manner, see? Sounds kinda like Firefly meets … Leverage, maybe?
The show will be written by Todd Stashwick and Dennis Calero. Stashwick (above, right) is also an actor who has been in nearly as many of Our Kind of shows as Mark Sheppard, from Angel, Buffy, and Dark Angel to The Middleman, Heroes, and Supernatural, plus mercenary...
