J.K. Rowling has a new crime novel out this week, The Ink Black Heart, and while there are obvious parallels between her experiences and the book’s plot about a creator who faces backlash over controversial subject matter, the Harry Potter scribe claims it’s merely coincidental.
Published under her pseudonym Robert Galbraith, the sixth installment of her Cormoran Strike series follows Edie Ledwell, a co-creator of a popular cartoon called The Ink Black Heart. Per the book’s official synopsis, Edie “is being persecuted by a mysterious online figure who goes by the pseudonym of Anomie.” According to Rolling Stone, Edie “sees internet trolls and her own fandom turn on her after the cartoon was criticized as being racist and ableist as well as transphobic for a bit about a hermaphrodite worm.” While detectives initially deny looking into the matter, they change...

Robert Eggers is such a dominant force in the indie film world that it’s easy to forget “The Northman” is only his third movie. Eggers made his feature debut with 2015’s “The Witch,” but he started directing films seven years earlier when he adapted Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” as a short in 2008.
The film helped Eggers develop the period horror aesthetic that he perfected in “The Witch,” and established his relationships with several key collaborators. Now, cinephiles can watch the short film for the first time, as Eggers has chosen to show the film exclusively on IndieWire.
“I am pleased to share ‘The Tell-Tale Heart.’ It is an uneven film, but my first film that I was proud of making,” Eggers wrote in a statement. “It is also my first collaboration with my Dp Jarin Blaschke and editor Lousie Ford, and we have worked together ever since,...

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has always liked to tease that the real cause of the zombie outbreak in his long-running comic series was extraterrestrial in nature. Back in January 2020, Kirkman responded to a question on Twitter as to the zombie outbreak’s origin with a simple “space spore.”
This was a joke, of course, but it was also a stealthy shout out to what The Walking Dead could have been.
Kirkman originally developed The Walking Dead as a Night of the Living Dead comic. But when Image Comics encouraged him to develop his own idea so that he could control the IP, Kirkman concocted a “Plan 9 From Outer Space-esque tale of how the zombies were actually animated by an alien race that was preparing to invade Earth by disrupting its infrastructure.”
That obviously never came to pass and The Walking Dead would go on to tell 193 issues of...

Get your wallets ready, PlayStation 4 owners: Sony’s latest sale for all owners of its soon-to-be-retired console is filled to bursting point with more games than you could possibly ever finish in a single lifetime. Konami is reportedly ready to revive Silent Hill by producing two very different games.
A new report suggests that Konami has approved the development of two new Silent Hill games.
This information seems to originate from the Twitter account AestheticGamer which has accurately reported on insider leaks in the past. They claim that Konami reached out to developers for Silent Hill pitches about two years ago and that they seem to have settled on a couple that they like.
The first pitch is for a kind of "soft-reboot" of the franchise, which we imagine could end up looking like the recent God of War in the sense that it tries to reimagine certain Silent Hill elements without completely re-writing the book in terms of lore. The second reportedly accepted pitch is for an "episodic TellTale/Until Dawn-style game." Again, there aren't many details available regarding the specifics of this project,...

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming action thriller American Assassin in which Michael Keaton trains Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner) to be a master assassin. Together they embark on a mission to stop Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) from starting a war.
I like what I'm seeing in this trailer and it actually looks like it could be a great and intense movie! This is also another badass role for Keaton, who is always fun to watch in the movies that he makes! Here's the full synopsis:
American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the...

Universal hired a new writer to help bring The Wolf Man back to the screen...
It wasn’t the Wolf Man’s fault he walked so thorny, it was the screenwriter’s. Universal is rebooting its horror classics for a new generation. For the remake of the 1941 film The Wolf Man, which starred Lon Chaney Jr., they are handing over the wolfbane to Dave Callaham, who wrote the screenplays for The Expendables, Doom, Tell-Tale and the upcoming Zombieland 2.
Callaham will be re-writing the first draft which was written by Aaron Guzikowski, who in turn wrote the screenplays for Prisoners and Friday The 13th. Callaham’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson was recently picked up to series by Amazon.
Universal hasn’t given away much as far as plot for The Wolf Man remake, but we know it’s about the stout-hearted Larry Talbot, heir to the Talbot family fortune and castle.

Rose McGowan has opened up about her acting career and her love life.
The actress, who is best known for her role as Paige Matthews in Charmed, told Fault magazine in a revealing interview that she has had some tough experiences on set.
Asked if she has ever done a movie she later disliked, McGowan said: "Tell Tale. And there are more where that came from. It's very hard to make a film that comes together on all levels.
"It's like painting with 100 paintbrushes that are held by individual egos. Also, I've worked with some not so nice people. Such a drag. If I have a troubling experience, I won't watch the product."
McGowan, who was engaged to both musician Marilyn Manson and director Robert Rodriguez, was also asked how it felt to have her personal life reported on.
"Well, I feel it's lazy when 'journalists' dredge up past relationships.

It may not have escaped your attention that The Walking Dead is something of a hot property these days. From the original comic book, which incredibly has been around for a decade now, an entire cultural phenomenon has sprung up and spawned an award winning television show, video games both good (Tell Tale Games' episodic Xbox offering) and bad (Survival Instinct – reviewed here), card games, clothing, lunch boxes and inevitably board games.
The latest of these board games is The Walking Dead: The Best Defense from Cryptozoic Entertianment, and is actually their second Walking Dead board game. The first was an enjoyable competitive game that had players racing to be the first to collect items from key locations in the television show, and on first glance The Best Defense might appear to be more of the same. Emily Owens, M.D. is settling nicely into the Tuesday night pocket, consistently delivering interesting stories and developing its characters. Tonight, of course, was no exception.
"Emily and... the Tell Tale Heart" revealed that maybe Cassandra has one after all, while showing just how big Emily's heart actually is.
Let's just get what's getting tiresome out of the way first so we can focus on more important things, shall we?
Is it just me or is the hazing getting old?
Yes, the theme is that life is like high school and social cliques exist long after adolescence, but week after week, the juvenile pranks are starting to grate. We had the nurses hazing Emily first, and tonight's "doppelwanger" escapades were abundant. Sure, let her fall in the ER and be embarrassed. There's no need to turn that embarrassment into a running gag that doesn't make sense in the context of...

Besides contributing to or providing soundtracks for a handful of licensed game titles, she's also worked on "God of War," had tracks in "LittleBigPlanet" and its sequel, and most recently, composed the soundtrack for Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed III: Liberation," for the vita.
Ms. Phillips' work on that game's soundtrack has just earned her yet another award, this time from Hollywood Music in Media. She was kind enough to answer a few questions about her work on "Liberation," bringing music to 18th century New Orleans, and finding the sound for the series' first female heroine.
MTV Multiplayer: First off, could you give our readers a little background on your career?
Winifred Phillips: My first job as a composer was for the Radio Tales series for National Public Radio. Radio Tales consisted of dramatic adaptations of classic stories and novels, predominantly in the genres of science fiction,...

Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie had an in-depth chat with the Eisner Award-winning writer/artist David Lapham on a wide range of topics including his adaptation of The Strain, the upcoming Ferals, the ups and downs of the comics world, blowing off steam on Twitter, and lots more.
Scott Allie: After breaking into superhero comics, you really made a name for yourself with Stray Bullets, which did two things: It (1) established you as a brilliant crime cartoonist and (2) marked a pinnacle of self-publishing, creator-owned success. Lately you've been a lot busier on licensed books. What's different about the industry now, as opposed to the late Nineties?
David Lapham: Thanks! I'll start by talking about the mid-Nineties, which is when we started Stray Bullets, and the movement of self-publishing, small press, and just independent-driven comics. For the record, I personally was never a self-publisher. Maria, my wife and business partner,...

I will be seeing The Raven this afternoon and to this point I have only heard a few rumblings as to its quality and those rumblings I don't think Relativity wants me to repeat here, which should give you some kind of sign as to what I've heard. That said, I'm a fan of director James McTeigue in that I liked V for vendetta, though I did absolutely loathe Ninja Assassin. So where will The Raven fall? Somewhere in the middle? As for the reason behind this post, Relativity sent over the following video which they are calling "Murderous Visions" and the plurality of the title tells me we can expect more. The gist of the video is to pair footage from the upcoming film with "A Tell Tale Heart," the Edgar Allan Poe story of Marie Roget. In this case we see the film's co-star Alice Eve who plays Emily Hamilton in the film,...

This is an interesting new clip from director James McTeigue’s “The Raven”, the film about Edgar Poe having to confront a serial killer using his stories to commit a series of murders. The clip is edited to Poe’s “A Tell Tale Heart” story, with Alice Eve in some serious creek without a paddle. Check it out, check it outers. The macabre and lurid tales of Edgar Allan Poe are vividly brought to life – and death – in this stylish, gothic thriller starring John Cusack as the infamous author. When a madman begins committing horrific murders inspired by Poe’s darkest works, a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) joins forces with Poe in a quest to get inside the killer’s mind in order to stop him from making every one of Poe’s brutal stories a blood chilling reality. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, which escalates...

The Words, written and directed by Lee Sternthal and Brian Klugman, is an unabashed piece of romantic cinema. It’s central romance? The written word; the idea that sometimes, for better and worse, art overtakes everything else.
Bradley Cooper stars as Rory Jensen, a recent college graduate determined to make his way and make his mark as a writer. Unfortunately, Rory doesn’t have any source of income, still asking his dad (J.K. Simmons) for money.
His new wife (Zoe Saldana) completely supports the dream. That’s about all we learn of this underwritten character. Once again, another Zoe Saldana performance wasted completely on her looks, which, though impressive, only breach the surface of the girl’s abilities. On their honeymoon in Paris, Rory comes across an old leather suitcase at an antiques shop, which Dora insists she buy for him.
Inside the suitcase is an yellow-tinted handwritten manuscript. A brilliant novel in fact,...

January 19th is not just a memorable date because it was the day former WWE Superstar Bam Bam Bigelow died, it's also the birthdate of Edgar Allan Poe. And, in a blending of historic horror with a modern master, Doug Bradley (famous for his portrayal of Pinhead in eight Hellraiser films) will be reading one of Poe's most beloved works on Delamorte's Dungeon of Delights radio show.
Hosted by Rob Delamorte, the radio show, airing at 11pm Est, will feature Bradley delivering a Poe tale in his own chilling style. And you have a chance to get involved in the action. The Facebook Page for Doug Bradley's Spinechillers (a collection of classic tales read by icons of horror cinema like Robert Englund, Jeffrey Combs and Bradley himself) currently has a poll set up for listeners to vote on which story they would like Bradley to read…The Tell-Tale Heart,...

I believe Rush is correct when they say that “living on a lighted stage approaches the unreal” – Roadie, a new drama from Michael Cuesta starring Ron Eldard as a recently dismissed roadie for Blue Oyster Cut (whose “Burning for You” played an essential part in Cuesta’s Twelve and Holding), is disconnected from the traditional experience of stationary adults. Eldard, a character actor frequently in supporting roles gives a strong lead performance as Jimmy Testagross. Down on his luck, unable to find a gig to keep him on the road, he comes home to a corner of Forrest Hills, Queens. He stays with his mother, played in a heartbreaking turn by Lois Smith, a women whose sight and memory are fading fast.
Touring Forrest Hills on an errand, he stops by the corner bar for a shot and a brew, where he encounters what the film’s official description calls “his longtime nemesis.

If you're at all familiar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, any adaptation of them will carry with it certain expectations: gothic atmosphere, a certain unnerving quality, what looks like a musical number.... wait, what? The Hollywood Reporter has posted three pictures from the new adaptation of The Tell-Tale Heart, based on Poe's short story about a chap who kills an old man, hides the corpse under his floorboards, and is slowly driven insane by the sound of beating heart and his own guilty conscience. The flick is being directed and co-written by John La Tier, and it's shooting in New Orleans, which is sure to add plenty of visual richness to the horrific story. So what does this first look at the Tell-Tale Heart reveal? Well, here's one of them: You can clearly see Poe's influence here in the, uh, sparkly lights. And the gossamer dress.

A psychotic break has fractured Luis (Luis Luque) and Beatriz’s (Beatriz Spelzini) marriage in El gato desaparece [The Cat Vanishes], playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. Proud parents of two, successful in life as a professor and translator respectively, and completely in love, they still prove ill equipped to handle mental instability. Brought on by the ceaseless toiling to validate his research and publish his magnum opus, paranoia sets in as ideas of sabotage begin to manifest. Accusations against his assistant at the university, Fourcade (Javier Niklison), are made while aggression takes hold. He beats his friend up in unjustified anger and then turns his violence onto Beatriz when the idea that she has been helping the traitor misguidedly appears logical. It is the sort of event that ruins lives, but Luis is lucky to find a second chance through psychiatric help, drugs, and compassion from those he wronged. The memory of unchecked and unprovoked chaos,...

Her Heart Still Beats is a variation of Edgar Allan Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart, and it is in post-production now from Creepy Kid Productions and director/writer Christopher D. Nunzio. Indie, fresh, unique, it should give Poe fans something to cheer for, something we really haven’t done since maybe Two Evil Eyes or better yet, the Aip Poe films from Roger Corman.
Here’s the plot:
When Ed’s wife comes home early from work one day, he becomes overtaken by a strange feeling when he looks into her eyes. Disturbed or possibly just paranoid, Ed becomes possessed with his wife’s eyes and struggles to understand these feelings. Is she evil, or is he insane? They may not have enough time to find out.
And now the promised trailer:

Everett Mary Louise Parker and Kevin Nealon on “Weeds”
With a steaming platter full of cooked meat, we’re back to “Weeds.” That’s some creative crediting sequencing there, what with the artfully-bordered, pot-plant covered paper plates.
It’s a zoom in on on Doug’s fancy New York City financial group office, where his pompous new boss is announcing the third quarter earnings for the hedge fund. They made a ton of money, and there’s some sort of beefsteak celebration at hand.

In America we’re used to seeing box-office results each Monday, but for American movies the sometimes more relevant figures — their foreign sales — are guarded trade secrets. Many producers, unable to get hard numbers for their comps, cling to outdated models and “percentage of the budget” charts when making business plans. That’s why the yearly feature by the French trade Ecran Total , published today here at Cannes, is so startling. By obtaining the contracts filed by French distributors at the public funding org, the Cnc, the journal prints the acquisition prices of foreign films, taking the temperature of not only the French film business but also, by extension, the business of any producer seeking to recoup a portion of their budget out of France.
Ecran Total‘s chart is missing some key players. France’s largest buyer, Metropolitan, is not represented because their publicly filed contracts do not mention figures.

Chicago – Patrick Wilson (“Little Children”) and Rose Byrne (“Damages”) play a truly terrified couple in James Wan’s “Insidious,” opening this Friday, April 1st, 2011. Produced by the team behind “Paranormal Activity” and written and co-starring Leigh Whannell, the man who did the same double duty on “Saw,” “Insidious” hopes to be the haunted house movie of 2011 with a twist. The writer and director sat down with HollywoodChicago.com recently to talk about their film and real-life inspirations, the art of practical effects, and even the most terrifying memories of their childhood entertainment.
