Not sick enough or sexy enough :(
Chris_Docker30 June 2008
This could be an extended romp on the lines of, "Not tonight, Dear, I have a headache." Ken and Amanda are a couple in their thirties. She has a temperature. But he wants to persuade her to have sex. In none-too-subtle fashion he makes advances and is rebuffed. He tells a story of some friends who reported having, "the hottest sex ever" while the woman was ill. Amanda is not convinced and, I'm afraid, neither was I.

Sick Sex uses constantly shaky hand-held camera movement to make it feel like a home movie. Instead of being romantic, Ken tries to woo Amanda with what might be Woody Allen style patter if it was more sensitive and a little funnier. She responds with lines like, "You know how sick I feel - why are you being a dick?" This is only amusing if you find the title and words like 'dick' hilarious for their own sake. The characters seem to have little in the way of real communication. So it is hard to believe they are a couple anyway. There is little or no attempt to create atmosphere, and lots of close ups (with the lack of establishing shots) make it feel like an impromptu sketch when the only prop was a bed.

The theme has plenty of opportunities, not just comic. It is a shame that they seem to have been largely wasted on this occasion.

Funny and romantic--if you think illness, nasty people and vile behavior are funny.

So, let me get this straight. A lady has a temperature of 102 degrees and her husband is so insensitive and gross that he tries to convince her to have sex?! What's particularly funny about that? With this plot idea, you really wonder what's coming next---humor about abortions or leprosy?! What is also rather sick (certainly not funny) is when the guy is reading to his wife. The book is about death and old age--at which time he begins gyrating against her! Then, to really make us laugh, they throw in a variety of crudities at each other as they treat each other like dirt. What fun. Cursing, illness, "cute" words like "dick" and "masturbate" and many other charming epithets. Wow, do the folks who made this film know humor and romance...NOT!!! This is not a pleasant film nor is it worth seeing. If you DO see it and like it, then I find that a bit scary.

Brilliant!

Pay no mind to the Liberal She-warriors! This short film is a testament to all married men who go through the exact same thing! Most times, the woman is not sick, just either lazy or wanting to "cuddle" and that's just crazy! For us men, it's always a battle! We always do those things that wives want us to do but the wives don't necessarily take the 50/50 commitment seriously. I always say, the #1 thing that kills sex in a relationship is the wedding cake! Don't let them eat it!
