Tiffcom Poised to Be More International, More Relevant, Says Market Chief Shiina Yasushi (Exclusive)
Tiffcom, the film market attached to the Tokyo International Film Festival, is set to be more international and more diverse in its first full comeback year after the Covid hiatus. It should also be more pleasant and convenient, having re-located to a more modern venue that is close to the film festival.
“Bringing the in-person market back after four years, my priority was to make sure that Tiffcom could happen during the festival, not some other time,” said Shiina Yasushi, who has headed the market for ten years. “That meant juggling dates, venue choices and budget.” Tokyo’s limited selection of appropriate venues came with other complications such as being in areas with expensive hotels or difficult transport options.

What if an unsold cartoonist sees the murderer’s face? What’s more, what if that face was turned into a “character” and a manga was drawn and sold?
Based on such an idea, the movie “Character” depicts a story in which each character intersects in layers.
The story co-creator Takashi Nagasaki, who has worked on many works by Naoki Urasawa, including “20th Century Boys” and “Master Keaton,” has finally made a live-action movie over 10 years!
Experience dark entertainment that no one has ever seen!!!

Over the last 14 years, Japan Cuts has unambiguously become America’s best annual showcase of new Japanese film. Produced in partnership with (and typically hosted by) New York’s Japan Society, the well-curated festival has provided domestic audiences with a comprehensive snapshot of the country’s ever-vital national cinema, from mainstream hits like “20th Century Boys” to obscure epics like “Heaven’s Story,” and from micro-budget dramas like “Amiko” to gonzo masterpieces like 2011’s immortal “Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.” (Cannes really dropped the ball on that one.)
And it wasn’t the only one: Despite the infinity pool of international streaming content that’s now available to cinephiles around the world, many (or even most) of the indelible movies that screen at Japan Cuts don’t go on to receive a proper release of any kind in the United States, which adds an extra touch of urgency to an already essential fest.
