On Fire

Warning: Spoilers
Certainly not the opening we expected, but way too generic with how all the characters behaved. Bishop is supposed to be level-headed and not fall into the cliche of the cop threatening to go vigilante to avenge their partner.

RIDICULOUS PLOT
spreadeagle17-13 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I know you're supposed to suspend your disbelief with these procedurals. My husband and I are fine with doing that because NCIS is often funny and the plots are sometimes even a little believable. But this one started losing me early on when Bishop announced that Torres pushed her out of the way of the 95 mph speeding car, then ran back to basically attack the car. Okay, just ignore that plot development. But I couldn't ignore the over the top ending.

First off, how on earth would that blonde girlfriend of the Russian psychopath possibly have known Torres and Bishop would be running the streets of DC (and on the street instead of the sidewalk next to them where they should have been running) and when to direct her boyfriend to hit them. The car was pretty much out of control anyway,

Then the writers go even farther over the top by sending the girlfriend into the hospital to kill Torres. How did she know where he was, much less which room and how to insert dirty heroin into his IV? Maybe she was a nurse in an earlier life.

Meanwhile, the psychopath boyfriend's body is found in the girlfriend's bathtub, shot in the head. No sign of struggle. The show leaves us with the suggestion that Gibbs shot him. Really? How did he know the psychopath would be in that apartment sans girlfriend? The man is never without his bodyguards, except maybe when with the girlfriend. So where was she?

We'll keep watching NCIS because we like the characters. But from now on I'll sport an illegal smile while watching (since we live in Texas).

Serviceable But Frustrating
jahern_200029 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Always like to sit and watch an NCIS episode. Just a little frustrated how real-life things are swept under the rug. We see how fast the Ferrari is going at the beginning of the episode yet according to Bishop, Torres had time to throw Bishop out of the way then attempt to run at and jump over the speeding car a la Kobe (RIP) How was Torres not dead? Why didn't they just get out of the road? Sounds more like Get Smart rather than NCIS "Missed it by THAT MUCH!" That' s why Bishop had to describe it rather than we get to see it. Also I gotta imagine that real protocols would have controlled Bishop better after she threatened to kill the bad guy. But it was something to watch while eating dinner.

Awful
d-robold2 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There was something off about this whole episode. Nothing felt right and, for the most part, the acting was terrible, perhaps because the plot was stale and unbelievable in parts, starting with the "accident". Bishop's version of what happened could never have happened. Then the vengeance routine, which, as an actress, she could not make convincing. Gibbs automatically sees Vance as an opponent even tho he didn't ask for an explanation of the government decision first. So tired of this gambit, it's been years. This show can and should be so much better. Finally, please do not send Gibbs back into vigilante mode!

Who writes this crap?!
rob hendrikx28 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When NCIS started, it was a pretty good series. Over the years it deteriorated, because Ziva had to be so tough, and Abby had to be so quirky (annoying, really). But lately the show has gotten ridiculous. Who writes these scenarios, and these dialogues??? After Bishop gives Vance a big mouth, his answer should have been: "Good luck on your next job interview!". Then she gives Gibbs attitude, and McGee. Is there no end to this woman's big ego? Apparently not, because next she tells McGee that she's gonna kill the bad guy. Obviously, both in this show and in NCIS LA, going rogue is all the rage nowadays, but this is taking it to the next level. I laughed out loud at my TV because the story was so incredibly unbelievable. I think I will stop watching this show, because it has outlived its watchability.

Uneven

Warning: Spoilers
"On Fire" is another episode in this season, where I felt the writing is off. It's not an awful entry to the series, but could have been way better.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great. "On Fire" is very well-directed, the music adds to the scenery and the acting's good for the most part. Emily Wickersham is maybe a bit stiff at times.

. The tension is well-built in this case and the story got interesting in the second-half, because of decent twists and turns.

But...

. I am just not into the romance plotline regarding Bishop and Torres. There is no chemistry between the characters. The writing here is pretty uneven too. Not all jokes land and some parts of the story feel underdeveloped, unfocused (especially the ending, which agreed raised a lot of questions).

Overall, an okay episode.

5/10 HK.

From almost the start...
faithless473428 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In the hospital the first "medical" guy Gibbs speaks to says he has a heart anomaly...WTH kinda hospital did they take him to? Then Torres has his "episode" and the guy says ... "I don't know, I think he is crashing"...WTH kinda medical place did they take Torres to? Then the guy calls for antibiotics during the crashing episode? (eye roll). Then the horrible accents when they trace the car. It does not get any better. I mean at nearly the end Bishop grabs a piece of evidence WITHOUT gloves.

Actually fairly dull
jrms-111 October 2021
How does someone come into collision with a speeding Lamborghini, even with trying to jump over it, and not sustain multiple fractures and contusions?

And how come hardly anyone can pronounce Xavier correctly?

Medical Drama--ick
koohii7 December 2020
If a car is in the habit of driving the same route pulling the same illegal speeds every morning for a month, why weren't the police waiting? If the guy is claiming diplomatic immunity, he can still be expelled as persona non gratta. Then there's the generic medical drama. Will the character in the bed have a seizure and the doctors call for a crash cart? Of course. Will a baddie try to attack someone in the hospital? Naturally. Real departments pull people off cases when they threaten to go nuts. And they sometimes assign chaperones if someone threatens to kill a suspect. Certainly the threatener becomes a "person of interest" when the suspect ends up dead.

Not a great episode, but almost no Ziva or Sloan soap-opera, so better than most.
