Holland Taylor knocks it out of the parka
donna-1182520 June 2020
"Ann" on PBS's Great Performances is a wonderful one woman play written and performed on stage by Holland Taylor, who presents a biographical homage to Ann Richards, former governor of Texas, often using Gov. Richards' own words from speeches, documents, and other sources.

Ms. Holland gives a tour de force performance of the controversial, strong, driven woman who has become an icon to many people, here and abroad, who embrace open minds and hearts and have a deep love for justice and equality.

We laugh, we cry, we listen in awe as Ann regales her life. Her humor, often punctuated with epithets as well as witticisms and jokes, holds us spellbound as we not only see history through Gov. Richards' eyes, but hear much wisdom relevant to all of us now.

Holland Taylor's performance seems a verisimilitude of Governor Ann Richards, giving flesh to her and breathing life and soul into her, so that it is not an actress we see and hear, but the very essence of the Governor herself.

This magnum opus deserves to win a mountain of prizes and accolades; everything about it is stunningly magnificent.
