A neat and informative "making of" documentary

This 17 minute documentary offers a neat and illuminating behind-the-scenes peek at the making of the excellent and exciting sci-fi/action end-of-the-world pip "Doomsday." Writer/director Neil Marshall openly acknowledges how such previous pictures as "The Warriors," "Escape from New York," and "The Road Warrior" influenced his movie and admits he enjoyed the daunting challenge of creating a massive epic feature on a relatively modest $30 million dollar budget (he refers to making the film as both a nightmare and an adventure at the same time). Terrific lead actress Rhona Mitra was specifically cast as the hard-nosed Major Eden Sinclair because she had the right edgy'n'gritty quality required for the part; Mitra underwent extensive physical training for the role and admits she loved working with co-star Bob Hoskins. Actor Sean Pertwee discusses his grisly death scene in which he gets cooked and eaten by rowdy urban cannibal punks. Actor Craig Conway talks about his first scene where he had to dance in front of 700 extras for two days. Malcom McDowell describes his character of Kane as a mixture of MacBeth and King Lear. Also covered in this doc are the cannibal punk cult, shooting on location in both South Africa and Glasgow, Scotland, the use of storyboards for the action scenes, and Marshall's wild imagination giving the movie its own uniquely twisted identity. Essential viewing for fans of the film.
