The great man
lor_18 July 2023
After Mary Anne's death, there's a touching letter for Dizzy to be read upon the occasion of her passing - a wonderful start to the final episode, covering 1872-1881, the last years of Disraeli.

With Disraeli as strategist, the Conservatives are swept back into power. His policies hark back to his concept of progressive conservatism, thought of 40 years earlier. On a bright note, he expresses his romantic feelings for Selena, artfully played by guest star Renee Asherson. He proposes a sort of platonic love between the two of them. A crisis arises regarding Turkey, with Russia among others ready to start a war.

Disraeli, with the Queen's consent, comes up with a plan to buy a controlling interest in the Suez Canal. The money is raised without a moment's qualm by borrowing the sum of four million pounds from Baron de Rothschild.

At the peak of his career, Dizzy resigns and heads for the House of Lords with a peerage. Subsequently he engineered a great diplomatic victory over powers such as Russia and Bismarck's Germany.
