Great stuff

Warning: Spoilers
For fans of Arthur Ransome, this drama-documentary is excellent and throws light on his exciting life before Swallows and Amazons. Who would have guessed from those books that he was closely involved in the Russian Revolution, had been to and fro to the country as a correspondent and had escaped from the country with Lenin's secretary and nearly lost his life? He comes across as really brave. (Recently, however, much doubt has been cast on his account of these events).

Simon Tcherniak is extremely good in the role. Although he was a good many years too young for the role when the film was made, he nevertheless looks very much like the photos of Ransome from those days.

Top-class drama-documentary

Top-class drama-documentary. Rhys Jones comprehensively and vividly sets the record straight for those who say 'Arthur Ransome? Didn't he just sit in the Lake District writing charming stories about middle-class children?' One by one he clearly presents the points of his refutation - his journalistic involvement in the 1917 Revolution, his classic books on the subject, his friendship with Lenin and specially Radek, his marriage to Trotsky's secretary.... The acted reconstructions are among the best I've seen - an excellent young Ransome, delightful scenes of his meeting of Evgenia in Trotsky's office, and a gripping dramatisation of their flight from Russia. Rhys Jones transforms it far beyond a biography into a story - even a fairy-tale.

A boatload of intrigue!

Fascinating - well worthwhile watch. So much history that even art struggled to imitate life. Answered lots of questions I'd had and puts lots of perspective.
