Stranger in town brings law, order and revenge
ckormos130 July 2013
I bought this DVD to follow the career of the Taiwan martial arts star Wen Chiang-Long. He made about 54 movies from about 1971 to 1981 and I have not been disappointed, though I doubt his name makes anyone's top ten list. Liu Ping had about double that career and typically plays the bad guy with little to say. I enjoyed his performance here as a good guy. He is a brawler, not a skilled fighter, and his fights were choreographed exactly like that which was a nice detail. Suen Yuet also appears as his standard character of the bad guy doofus. The first eight minutes of the movie are all action with the dialog "Who sent you to kill me?" "Brother Won." Wen Chiang-Long figures out that Master Won and Brother Won are really the same guy. (Nice police work, Lou.") The basic story is then set as bad guys beat up everyone who won't sell their land. There's a bit more I won't give away. Most of all there is just enough character development to make the viewer actually care about these people. After that it's fight after fight, good choreography, a touch of comedy, and a great demise for the big villain. I'd recommend this as comparable to any Shaw Brothers movie made the same year. So why was this official store bought DVD nothing more than a pan and scan to VHS tape in 1982 converted to a binary file? This was a good movie worthy of preservation and restoration. What can us fans do to restore and preserve such films? Obviously buying this pathetic copy didn't do anything to help.
