Disney's 1998 animated film "Mulan" gave us one of the most badass Disney women the company has ever created. The movie tells the story of Fa Mulan, a young woman who does not fit into the traditional mold of the other Chinese women in her village. Her family is constantly embarrassed by her nontraditional behavior, but they still hold out hope of her one day bestowing honor upon their family name. When news comes of the Huns attacking imperial China, every family is instructed to send one able-bodied soldier to fight in the army. Mulan's father, an ailing former soldier, is fully prepared to go into battle even though doing so will most certainly lead to his death. Not wanting to lose him to the war, Mulan secretly enlists in his place, saving his life. She disguises herself as a man, and quickly proves her strength and her worth as a...

The 1998 animated Disney’s Mulan introduced many in Western audiences to the legend of a young Chinese woman who disguised herself as a man to fight against an invading army. But the legend of Mulan had been around a lot longer—the first transcription of the story appears in the sixth century, and the earliest film version appeared in 1927. If you just can’t get enough of Mulan, check out these other versions of her story.
The Ballad of Mulan (1998)
While this picture book is geared at a young audience, it’s notable because it includes the text of one of the early poem versions in the untranslated Chinese, alongside a prose translation by author-illustrator Song Nan Zhang. It also came out the same year as Disney’s animated feature, which means young readers could have picked it up around the same time they saw the film on the big screen.

Meet the new Hua Mulan!
Disney announced that after a worldwide search for the leading lady in its upcoming live-action movie, Mulan, Chinese actress Liu Yifei has landed the role.
For those unfamiliar with the beloved tale, Mulan follows a young Chinese maiden who disguises herself as a warrior in order to save her father.
Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, is apparently widely known in China as "Fairy Sister" for her appearance. In addition to acting, she's also made a name for herself as a singer and a model.
At age 11, Yifei moved to New York City with her mother, only to return to China a few years later in 2002 to pursue her acting career. The 30-year-old actress' most recent credits include movies The Chinese Widow and Once Upon a Time, which earned $82.3 million in China this summer.
She's also a brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier and Pantene.

With plans afoot for a live action take on Mulan, we look at the challenges facing Disney...
After more than 50 years of making animated features, Disney have now turned their attention to live-action adaptations of their famous films. After releases such as 101 Dalmatians (1996), Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015), the studio's new creative direction has earned critical acclaim and financial success. It is also making its mark on the global box office, as the recently released Beauty And The Beast remake has earned small change in the region of $1.2bn and counting.
Among the upcoming remakes planned is Mulan, which already has fans of the 1998 Disney film debating about its faithfulness to the animated feature. That's especially so given reports about director Niki Caro's indecisiveness regarding the inclusion of songs such as Honour To Us All and I'll Make A Man Out Of You, as well as the...

There are at least two live-action Mulan movies currently in the works, with Sony and Disney both attempting to bring their version of the classic tale of Hua Mulan to the screen. Now, the Disney project’s recently acquired director, Niki Caro, has revealed the somewhat baffling fact that her version of the film will give up one of its key advantages over Sony’s more brutal take: the animated Mulan’s library of songs.
That’s per an interview Caro recently gave to Moviefone, in which she confirmed that her film will be “a big, girly martial arts epic” with “no songs right now.” Caro noted that Mulan will also be “extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving,” but not, apparently, very musical. That’s a departure for Disney’s live-action efforts, which seem at least half-designed to remind parental audiences how much they used to love “A...

The saga of the dueling live-action Mulan movies has taken another step forward, with Variety reporting that Disney’s version of the classic Chinese tale has tapped Niki Caro to direct. Caro—who’s also apparently on the list of directors the company’s eyeing for its upcoming Captain Marvel movie—is best known for her 2002 coming-of-age story Whale Rider.
Taking on a job that was initially offered to Ang Lee, Caro will be facing off against Sony’s version of the story of legendary, secretly female Chinese soldier Hua Mulan. That film is being directed by Game Of Thrones’ Alex Graves, and will allegedly be much more of a war movie; it’ll be interesting to see how Graves’ bloody style contrasts with Caro’s, whose other recent projects include North Country and McFarland, USA. Disney’s Mulan is expected to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.

The race between Disney and Sony’s competing Mulan projects is beginning to heat up. Late last year, we brought you the news that the latter studio had drafted in Alex Graves (Game of Thrones) to direct. All has been quiet on the Sony front ever since, but we understand that, in respecting the Chinese heritage at the heart of Hua Mulan’s epic story, both live-action interpretations will feature predominantly Asian casts.
Going one step further, it’s now been revealed that Disney has appointed Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife) at the helm of its own Mulan movie. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, confirming that Caro, who enjoyed her big break back in 2002 through acclaimed family drama Whale Rider, saw off competition from Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and the prolific Michelle MacLaren (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones) to land the gig, and will work alongside Crouching Tiger’s Bill Kong,...

If Ang Lee hadn’t passed on directing Disney’s live-action retelling of 1998’s animated Mulan — based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a warrior’s daughter who disguises herself as a man to go to war — he probably would have shot the epic battle scenes in the Himalayan mountains in his new 4K resolution, 3D at 120 frames-per-second format, as debuted in his just-released Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
But he had to pass “because I’m still obliged to promote [Billy Lynn],” the Oscar-winning director tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The HBO smash Game of Thrones has served as something of a launchpad for directors these last few years. Alan Taylor made the jump from Thrones to blockbuster movies when he helmed Marvel's Thor: The Dark World. Michelle MacLaren was all set to make the same jump before she bailed from DC's Wonder Woman. Now another Game of Thrones director is being handed the reins of a big studio picture: Sony's live-action Mulan.

Though the idea of women in the military may shock and offend Mike Pence, both Sony and Disney are still moving forward with their own live-action takes on the story of Hua Mulan, the legendary Chinese warrior who disguised herself as a man so she could join the Imperial Army in her father’s place. Disney’s movie recently missed out on getting Ang Lee to direct, but now Sony’s movie has locked in a guy who has some experience directing stuff that involves medieval weaponry.

Back in 1999, the governor of Indiana Mike Pence, who is now Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, was a talk show host and wrote an interesting op-ed about Disney’s “Mulan” being “mischievous liberal propaganda.”

Disney adds Snow White and Mulan to its list of live action takes on its animated features...
You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

The live-action remake train isn’t stopping folks. Disney is said to be working on a live-action retelling of Mulan, based on its 1998 animated film about Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a female warrior. They certainly seem to be going for the strong titles; we got Cinderella and still to come we have Jungle Book, Dumbo, and Beauty and the Beast.
Cinderella opened with big money and rave reviews so it was only a matter of time until we heard what the next project would be. Mulan will have a female lead and diversity in a Chinese character as well.
Fyi: China produced an adaptation of the legend in 2009 called Mulan: Rise of a Warrior.

Now that "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent" and "Cinderella" have all been hits, Disney is moving forward with other live-action adaptations of its animated classics. This time around, it's "Mulan." Disney bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in the studio's 1998 animated film, which grossed $304.3 million worldwide and earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Disney is also making live-action remakes of "Beauty and the Beast," "Alice in Wonderland" sequel, "The Jungle Book" and "Dumbo."...

Following Alice In Wonderland, Maleficent, the just-released Cinderella and the currently-filming Beauty And The Beast, Disney are heading east for their next live-action fairytale. The Mouse House are now putting together a new retelling of the Chinese legend Mulan. Newcoming team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek are at work on the screenplay.Disney, you'll recall, previously tackled Mulan with a classic animation in 1998, hence most of the internet this morning referring to the new iteration as a remake. Since the legend dates back to the sixth century, however, it seems a bit much to be calling the one with the proto-Donkey Eddie Murphy comedy dragon the "original version", as many are. The first film adaptation was a Chinese silent in 1927.Whatever, in any telling, the thrust is a peasant girl who disguises herself as a man and takes her father's place in the army to go off and fight dastardly invading forces.

As Cinderella becomes Disney's latest live action box office hit, the studio is planning a new take on Mulan...
Just a very quick update here. We've heard no more on this version of Mulan since we first reported it in March 2015. But there is now a competing project at Sony...
Right. If we're following this correctly, then Disney is currently working on live action takes on Beauty And The Beast, The Jungle Book, Dumbo (with Tim Burton apparently attached to direct) and a new Alice In Wonderland movie. Throw in the Cruella de Vil film too that's somewhere in development, and that's at least five live action movies it's got on the go, that have a grounding in one of its animated films.
Actually, make that six.

Walt Disney Pictures is developing a live-action movie based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan that serves as further proof of the studio’s commitment to diverse storytelling, TheWrap has learned. Disney has purchased a screenplay from the writing team of Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that follows the Chinese female warrior, whose legend was first told in the 1998 animated movie “Mulan,” which grossed over $300 million worldwide and spawned a direct-to-video sequel. “Mulan” told the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can join the army and fight in a war. "Alice In Wonderland," "Malificent," "Cinderella," "Beauty & The Best," "Dumbo"....Disney has certainly found what they think is a winning live-action formula, and frankly I'm just surprised they haven't tried to cram all of this into one shared universe. Either way, another animated movie from the Disney vault is getting a live-action redo. THR reports that "Mulan" is getting a remake. There's a script in place from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, and Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (who both worked on "We're The Millers") are producing. The original movie did decent business in 1998, earning $336 million worldwide, along with a Golden Globe nomination, and it spawned the 2005 sequel, "Mulan II," which went straight to DVD, and that Disney would probably prefer you just forget about. So it's proven itself once, and Disney is betting on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan working again. No word...

Written by the screen writing team of Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, no director is attached to the project at this early stage, but We're The Millers' Chris Bender and J.C. After the runaway success of its (fantastic) Cinderella adaptation, Disney is hard at work developing more live-action takes on its classic animated films. And with Beauty and the Beast already in the works with Emma Watson starring, the studio is currently mulling Mulan as its next live-action retelling.
Disney has picked up a script by writing duo Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a female warrior and the focus of Disney’s 1998 animated hit. The pair don’t have any feature credits yet, but they wrote for the Know Theatre of Cincinnati and rewrote an Amazon Studios script.
Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (We’re the Millers) are taking producing roles in the project, which is on the fast track as Disney works to capitalize on Cinderella‘s success. Since opening three weeks ago, the Lily James-starring pic has earned $336.2 million worldwide.

It's no "Bambi," but Disney may already have already set its next animated flick due for a live-action reboot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio wants to develop a live-action version of "Mulan," its 1998 film centered around the titular ancient Chinese girl, who disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father's place in battle. Disney has already reportedly purchased a script by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that features the same Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, which inspired the original animated flick, THR writes.
While "Mulan"'s box office receipts were modest by Disney standards -- it pulled in around $304 million internationally -- the studio's recent success with live-action adaptations of its previous flicks has proven irresistibly lucrative. "Cinderella," starring Lily James, has raked in $336.2 million worldwide since its bow three weeks ago, and last year's "Maleficent," featuring newly-minted Kids' Choice Award-winner Angelina Jolie, hauled in a whopping $758.4 million.

With the news that Once Upon a Time will be tackling the story of Mulan in its second season comes the realization that no story is safe from being adapted by the ABC fantasy series. The choice to use Mulan shows they are no longer concerned with sticking purely with fantasy-based material. The character Hua Mulan comes from an ancient Chinese poem that inspired the 1998 Disney animated film Mulan, which you can bet will be the primary source of inspiration for the character and her backstory. While all the characters on Once Upon a Time come from classic fairy tales and folklore, many of the names and details are borrowed straight from the Disney versions of those stories. For instance, it’s only in Disney’s Pinocchio that the conscience figure is called Jiminy Cricket. This means it’s possible we could see the character Mushu. But for now, let’s focus on Mulan.

A legendary warrior is joining Once Upon a Time’s second season.
Hangover 2 and Sucker Punch actress Jamie Chung has been cast as the Chinese fighter Mulan in the show. The character is expected to have a recurring role in the ABC hit’s eagerly awaited second season.
The character originates from an ancient Chinese poem about Hua Mulan, a young woman who takes her elderly father’s place in the army. ABC’s parent company Disney adapted the story for a well-received 1998 animated musical film starring Ming-Na and Eddie Murphy.
How will Mulan fit into the show’s current storyline?...
