Alf Garnett comes home late from work to find his dinner is burnt since wife Elsie and daughter Rita have gone to the pictures and assumed he would be home earlier. For that reason son-in-law Mike only bought three portions of fish and chips and Alf's efforts to call the chip shop from the phone box outside his house for more are frustrated by a vapid dolly bird chatting endlessly to her lover and one Ted Williams who keeps ringing the kiosk to ask for a message to be passed to a neighbour. Alf is clearly destined to stay hungry.

Harold has booked a skiing holiday to Austria and intends to go on his own - much to his father's annoyance. He has rigged up a makeshift ski slope in the back yard on which to practice but it is less than steady and Harold comes a cropper, ending up with his leg in plaster. Of course Albert does not want the ticket to be wasted and takes the Austrian holiday himself, leaving Harold to recuperate in Stoke-on-Trent.
