Jeremy Allen White is looking to start dancing in the dark, as the Emmy-winning actor is eyeing the starring role of Bruce Springsteen in a feature biopic.
White is in talks to play the rock superstar in Deliver Me From Nowhere, which also has A24 circling. Based on Warren Zanes’ 2023 book of the same name, the movie is set to focus on the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska.
Scott Cooper is adapting the script with plans to direct. Gotham Group is behind the project, which counts Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein as producers. Former Netflix film head Scott Stuber is also involved in the screen version of Deliver Me From Nowhere.
Springsteen is a music icon known as “The Boss” and continues to draw rapt audiences with his legendary live performances. Nebraska was Springsteen’s sixth studio album and released two years before his smash Born in the U.

Oh, did we mention he also has a supporting role in David Leitch’s flick The Fall Guy, which will arrive on May 3? Recently, the actor has been in the news for his fervent promotion of the upcoming Sony project, Kraven the Hunter. However, it appears that his efforts are falling flat with fans, as he employs the same trope that audiences have grown tired of.

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

It will take several years, however, for the industry to pivot away from superheroes entirely, and there are still going to be some interesting experiments/absurdities to enjoy while on our way out the door. They blew up the Chicken Man in Philly last night but will they greenlight a movie in Hollywood? Rumors are swirling that a film may be in the works about Bruce Springsteen’s iconic album “Nebraska”, released in 1982. A Bruce biopic seems almost like a given at this point in his life and career; that this supposed project will focus on his most unique and thematically heavy album is all the more promising. Word right now is that Springsteen is in talks with director Scott Cooper, whose Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace and Black Mass had some dark influences themselves.
“Nebraska” – released between double album “The River” and his reigning best-seller “Born in the USA” – captures some of Springsteen’s darkest lyrics, with songs about people who, as he put it, “just get shot off somewhere where nothing seems to matter.” To give a more direct example, the opening...

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

Joel Edgerton has had a hell of a career as an actor. He’s been able to work in such films as Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby, Red Sparrow, Black Mass, and Warrior. He’s worked alongside the likes of Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jason Bateman. Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

Welcome to another edition of Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key execs and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Phil Hunt is not a conformist. From the moment he burst onto the British independent scene more than two decades ago with his microbudget productions Fast Food and Chunky Monkey – the former starring a young Gerard Butler and the latter an off-beat black comedy about a loner with a penchant for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Julie Andrews – it was clear that this was a guy who was not going to...

Exclusive: We’ve heard from sources that Jason Seagraves has exited Cavalry Media as their SVP of Development.
Seagraves is the second executive to leave the management and production company following co-founder Dana Brunetti, which we first reported.
Seagraves, I understand, has both Brunetti and Cavalry Media co-founder Keegan Rosenberger’s approval to transition to a producorial role on his projects, one being the teen drama series Motorheads which is set up at Amazon Studios with John A. Norris as showrunner.
Motorheads is a coming-of-age ensemble drama, set in blue collar steel town that’s trying to reinvent itself. The show follows as its denizens navigate the hierarchy and rules of high school, while others are running from a dark past looking for new beginnings.
Before Cavalry Media, Seagraves was at Cross Creek Pictures as VP of Production and Development. There he steered such movies as the Oscar nominated Denzel Washington movie Roman J. Israel,...

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).

Plot: West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.
Review: The Pale Blue Eye is a film I have been looking forward to since it was announced that Netflix had bought the rights back in 2021. Based on the novel by Louis Bayard, the whodunit chronicles a mystery featuring a brilliant detective and a historical figure. This combination works wonderfully in this film thanks to the talents of Christian Bale and Harry Melling as two very different characters. Writer/director Scott Cooper, known for his distinct style, has long pursued adapting The Pale Blue Eye, and his passion shows in the finished product. Still, despite the competency and talent involved in bringing this story to the screen,...

Christian Bale reunites with his Out of the Furnace director, Scott Cooper, for a new Netflix film that uncovers the origins of Edgar Allen Poe. Cooper is a director that likes to emphasize atmosphere in his movies, helming films such as Crazy Heart and Black Mass; none of his movies are picturesque nor glamorous. “We are all influenced by our surroundings, our atmosphere, the environments in which we live,” the director says as he takes a similar approach with his new gothic film, The Pale Blue Eye.
The official Netflix synopsis for the film reads,
“West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a gray winter morning, a cadet is found dead. Not many things build more momentum for a movie than a comeback performance does. While some actors can find this term offensive – i.e., Johnny Depp for his role as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, some actors yearn for it in the hope of reigniting their careers. Often, actors can churn out stellar performance after stellar performance, but the overall quality of the movie is letting them down. Maybe it has a weak script, terrible pacing, strange editing choices, or no chemistry between supporting actors. But every once in a while, these actors rise from the ashes and blow us

Kevin Bacon has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it is in an incredibly surprising way. He will be playing himself in the forthcoming "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" set to premiere on Disney+ on November 25, 2022. Thanks to mergers and multiverses, Bacon technically already is in the MCU, as he played Sebastian Shaw in "X-Men: First Class," but this is his official introduction to the current slate.
Because Bacon will be playing himself, it immediately brings to mind the incredibly fun game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." The man has appeared in so many films for over 40 years now, in both leading and supporting parts, that it feels like he has worked with every actor out there. Surprisingly, this holiday special will be the first time he has worked with every actor that makes up the Guardians team. That means playing Six Degrees with this cast is pretty fun.

Writer-director Scott Lyus made something of an impact on the film festival circuit with his short film Black Mass and now he’s back with his first feature, Walking Against the Rain, which explores a familiar post-apocalyptic theme but puts a wonderfully different spin on things!
The film follows two strangers, Blair and Tommy are navigating their way across a barren landscape in a desperate attempt to find each other. With their only form of communication being two soon-to-die battery-operated radio microphones and with a new evil in the shape of ‘The Forsaken’ tracking them down, they must not only make their way to a rendezvous point but also merely survive.
By now there’s no one out there who doesn’t have experience in watching post-apocalyptic movies, and probably are familiar with the nihilistic,...

When it comes to the Dakota Johnson Johnny Depp relationship, it’s a complicated issue. The two worked together years ago on a project called Black Mass. In 2015, they attended the Venice Film Festival together as a means of promoting their film. The world tuned in to watch these two battle it out on stage, and everyone began focusing on the Dakota Johnson Johnny

Also leaving HBO and HBO Max this month is another Nolan classic, “Inception,” Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” as well as two rom-com favorites “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “You’ve Got Mail.”

Dakota Johnson was dragged into the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial firestorm on social media after co-starring with Depp in 2015’s “Black Mass.”
A video of Johnson reacting to Depp’s explanation of his bandaged fingers while at a Venice Film Festival press conference went viral amid the Depp v. Heard defamation trial, during which both former spouses claimed domestic abuse. Part of Depp’s testimony included that Heard severed the tip of his finger with a vodka bottle during an argument in 2015, seemingly before the “Black Mass” premiere. The jury ultimately ruled that Heard defamed ex-husband Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed implying that she endured physical, psychological, verbal, and sexual domestic abuse at the hands of Depp, whom she did not actually name.

Dakota Johnson broke her silence to Vanity Fair on what it was like being dragged into the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Johnson went viral on social media during the trial due to a video from a 2015 press conference she attended with Depp at the Venice Film Festival to promote their crime drama “Black Mass.” In the video, Johnson reacts to Depp’s bandaged fingers and laughs after he seemingly explains his injury.
Depp’s finger injury became a focal point during the trial. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star testified that Heard severed the tip of finger with a vodka bottle during an argument in 2015. As a result, social media users went crazy dissecting the video Johnson noticing Depp’s injury. One YouTube clip of the Johnson video has the title “The Exact moment Dakota Johnson Knew Amber Heard was Violent towards Johnny Depp” has over 3 million views and counting.

Ray Liotta mixed affable identifiability with mobster menace for his role as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. It is one of the reasons the film became the gangster classic it is today. The director got what he wanted from an actor who knew how to give. It was the only time they worked together. But they almost pulled off at least one other job, and it may even have nabbed an extra Oscar. The actor who played it in The Departed certainly got a nomination.

The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial has grabbed headlines due to the often grotesque and sordid details of the couple’s troubled marriage. But the jurors are also being asked to consider whether either of them suffered actual career damage from the other’s lies about them.
And while there is evidence that both of their careers have been hurt, it’s much trickier to try to connect that damage to specific defamatory statements.
Depp has alleged that he lost tens of millions of dollars because of Heard’s allegations of domestic violence, which she alluded to in a 2018 op-ed. But the testimony showed that Depp was a star in serious decline even before the allegations, and a series of legal setbacks made him virtually unemployable by major studios.

Nicolas Cage helped Johnny Depp get his first film role in what turned out to be Wes Craven’s original Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. For many actors, being in a horror classic would be the highlight of their career. For Depp, it was just the beginning.
The actor has made nearly 100 films since then, including What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Chocolat, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Black Mass and, of course, five Pirates films that have grossed over 4 billion worldwide.
Depp has worked with a long list of great actors including Oscar-winners Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo Di Caprio, Juliette Binoche, Al Pacino, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Charlize Theron and Martin Landeau.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Antlers (Scott Cooper)
Scott Cooper is comfortable in the mud. The American director routinely finds himself in the confines of the lowdown and dirty, in gritty landscapes with working-class characters overcoming their shortcomings and often turning to violence to solve their problems. While his previous two features Black Mass and Hostiles failed to find tension in their deliberately tedious pacing, Antlers strikes the balance between methodology, terror, and blue-collar dynamics. – Erik N. (full review)
Where to Stream: HBO Max
Blackhat (Michael Mann)
Michael Mann is one of the few directors still making thoughtfully composed and visceral action films for an audience that refuses to turn its brain off. That Mann also chooses to tackle concerns of the modern world while still maintaining...
