This summer, there will be plenty of reasons to visit the Walt Disney World Resort. With new attractions and a returning festival and water park experience, it might be a great time to visit.
We often discuss the expense of a Walt Disney World vacation, but for many, it’s a family tradition, or it’s a lifetime wish come true. Summer 2024 might be a great time to visit the parks as a few “new” experiences are opening, and the popular Epcot Food & Wine Festival is returning.
Here’s what’s new! 1. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
At the Magic Kingdom, guests can ride the rethemed “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” attraction. It is the same ride system as “Splash Mountain”, but it has been completely re-themed to Tiana and her friends.
2. Country Bear Musical Jamboree
Another rethemed attraction that is set to reopen this summer is the “Country Bear Musical Jamboree.

Disney parks purists rejoice.
The company’s Imagineering team has released the first look at the actual Tiana character that will enliven the upcoming Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction at U.S. parks, and it is refreshingly old school.
Unlike the initial face-projection characters from Epcot’s Frozen Ever After, which creeped some guests out, Tiana is fully animatronic in the tradition of classic Disney rides like Pirates of the Caribbean. Catch your first look in the video below.

Slamdance has announced the winners of its annual screenplay competition, with Mike Ackerman’s feature-length script “This End Up” winning the grand prize.
Slamdance announced the awards — recognizing writers across the categories of feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot, short film and a special mentorship award — during a ceremony held at Los Angeles’s Westwood Landmark Theater on Wednesday night. In total, the organization gave out more than $18,000 in prizes and industry services.
Per the official synopsis of “This End Up,” Ackerman’s winning screenplay follows “a sheltered man who lives his life quite literally, and physically, upside-down. When he finally meets a woman who accepts him as he is, her closed-minded family plants doubt as to whether his condition will stand in the way of her dream of an adventurous lifestyle.”
Anna Lee Lawson, the film festival and screenplay competition manager, commented on Ackerman’s work, saying, “Mike’s...

Emma posted the video on June 1, but it's unclear when the footage was taken.
In the video, Bruce can be seen riding Splash Mountain with one of his younger daughters - he and Emma share Mabel, 11, and Evelyn, 9. The 68-year-old throws a protective arm across his daughter's waist and says, "You better watch out," as his little one laughs. He then adds, "I think we're going again."
Emma also included clips featuring her family enjoying other rides in the park. She captioned the video, "You bet this family will be back for more fun and laughs when you reopen as Tiana Bayou!

Exclusive: Riot Games, the developer and publisher behind League of Legends and the breakout animated series Arcane, has appointed former Disney exec Cristina Fiumara as its first-ever Global Head of Animation Content Development for Film & TV.
Fiumara comes to Riot after serving as VP of Streaming Content at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Back in 2020 Disney announced that its popular (but highly controversial) attraction Splash Mountain would get an overlay, this time themed to “Princess and the Frog,” its 2009 animated feature that starred the studio’s first African American Princess, Tiana (voiced memorably by Anika Noni Rose).

Announced today during Essence Fest in New Orleans (where the film and new attraction will be set), Disney also announced the first concrete details of the attraction’s storyline: “Picking up where the film left off, guests will join Princess Tiana, Naveen and jazz-loving alligator Louis on an adventure through the bayou as...

Disney+’s new documentary series “Sketchbook” (now on Disney+) takes you inside the process of some of Disney’s most talented artists, watching them working and hearing their stories.
In some ways it’s not unlike the experience guests used to get at The Magic of Disney Animation that was a key part of Disney-mgm Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) in Florida. The attraction was the guest-facing extension of the Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida outpost, which was responsible for some of the animation in “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” and all of the animation for “Mulan,” “Lilo & Stitch” and “Brother Bear.”
One of the animators responsible for the success of the Florida studio was Mark Henn, an extremely gifted Disney animator who on “Sketchbook” shows you how to animate Young Simba. After the Florida studio closed up shop in 2004, he returned to Burbank and...

Disney+’s “Sketchbook,” streaming now, is a fascinating and emotional look at the artists behind your favorite Disney characters.
The set-up is simple: each episode has an animator instructing you on how to draw a Disney character. Their instructions are informative and easy to follow, but the real treat of each episode is getting to know the animators a little better. You hear them talk about coming to the studio and navigating various productions, all the while offering helpful hints and gentle encouragement.
One of the very best episodes involves Eric Goldberg, the animator behind the Genie in “Aladdin” (the character he instructs you how to draw), Louis in “The Princess and the Frog” and Phil in “Hercules,” among many others. (He also co-directed “Pocahontas” and directed two segments of the underrated “Fantasia 2000.”) Incredibly, he stuck with the studio after it almost exclusively switched to computer animation, providing 2D...

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz says today’s acquisition of rights to make dolls and toys stemming from Disney’s princess and Frozen will arm the company with more recognizable properties in a crowded marketplace.
“The importance of big franchises is going to become more critical than ever,” CEO Ynon Kreiz, who told Deadline in an interview after the deal was announced earlier today. Hasbro had previously taken the rights from Mattel in 2014.
Kreiz said the multi-year pact with Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing had “been in the works for a while.” Mattel already has had licensing deals with Disney for Pixar’s Cars, Toy Story and forthcoming spinoff Lightyear.

For three hours on Friday morning, Disney flooded social media with a Main Street Parade of first looks, announcements, and title treatments for at least 45 series, features, and specials set to debut on its streaming service, Disney Plus. The promotional cavalcade covered every section of the service — Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Disney animation and live action, and National Geographic, as well as some offerings for Hulu and Star Plus — as ostensibly part of a company-wide effort to celebrate the streamer’s two year anniversary, dubbed Disney Plus Day.
But coming just two days after Disney announced that Disney Plus added a meager 2.1 million subscribers in its most recent quarter — causing a 7% drop in the company’s stock price on Thursday — the motive behind the effort was plain: To remind Wall Street and subscribers alike that Disney Plus remains second to none in the breadth, depth, and quality of its content. “Trust us,...

It’s been almost a decade since Jennifer Lee became the first woman to helm a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film, 2013’s “Frozen.” She partnered with Chris Buck, and the duo co-directed and co-wrote what would become one of Disney’s all-time biggest hits. The film won an Oscar for animated feature.
In 2018, Lee was upped to chief creative officer and sought to find new voices. She would help burst open the door for other female directors at the studio including Peggy Holmes, who helmed “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” and “Get a Horse!’s” Lauren MacMullan.
This month, Variety will bestow its Creative Leadership Award on Lee for not only her work on animation but also for helping other women follow the opening she made.
Before she could even speak, Lee, a Rhode Island native, was exposed to her grandparents’ Disney records and the books that came with them.
