The movie is a catfish
calbruin227 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First, most of the reviews which rate the film at 8/10 or 10/10 are suspect, perhaps written by friends and family associated with the director, Jorge Ameer, or(-inclusive) lead actor, Matthew Leitch, "...the film summarizes Brian's (played by the very talented Matthew Leitch) travels through Panama and the high energy, intensely beautiful and awesome carnival of Las Tablas." Seriously?

Leaving aside what the movie intended to do, let's address what the movie does present. The movie is not a collage nor a kluge but a non sequitur sequence that portents at being some faux-reality narrative. In some sharing communities and in some listings, this movie is referred to as a gay themed film; in the background of the transition from the heteronormative almost pornographic first scene, following the opening credits, there is a movie poster to an actual gay themed film. This movie, on the other hand, there is no gay storyline, no gay theme, no well-defined gay character, and not even a hint of any homoerotic subtext between the faux video diary's subject and the friend hired as a camera man, the director himself, who we may assume is being himself and not playing some character. The only hint of anything "gay" is the man on man, again almost pornographic, fellatio scene. When asked how he will preoccupy himself on the aeroplane flight, the lead answers, "catch up on masturbating," to which a character responses without skipping a beat as if in midstream of another conversation, "oh, good idea. The weather is hot ..." Just when the movie starts to get interesting with the first and only dramatic turn, the movie ends with the lead character beating up to death? - we do not know because the movie ends showing Brian's bloody hands.

Another spoiler point, the full pornographic scene involves the lead character masturbating in Jorge's childhood bed.

Half the movie is long, panning shots, or, what in the industry lingo is called, B-roll footage.

The audience is given no resolution to the dramatic turn in the one graspable narrative of the movie, the lead character is catfished, a term that can be used now to describe such a situation coined by the titular film that came out or was made the same year, by a male scam artist, whose intensions were never explained, who pretended at being a female on some online forum that in the film is called "The List", a simulacrum of Craigslist.

A test of the viewers' tolerance--for lifestyles and bad movies
dewer-25 December 2009
Travel, particularly to Latin America, is of great interest to me. After reading previous reviews, I was looking forward to seeing Sabor Tropical, although there was an element throughout the reviews that was vaguely troubling to me. After watching the "director's cut", I feel compelled to write a review that will spare others from an awful waste of time and money. First, most of the movie is presented as footage from a hand held video camera--the cinematography is therefore terrible. The perspective of Panama is street scenes behind one of the characters that could have been shot in Newark, New Jersey, or out of a moving car window of sky and fields that could have been in Iowa. The scenes of Carnival were shot at night with a voice over introduction that sounded like it was being read from a travel brochure. Second, the "star" is a narcissistic exhibitionist (to be kind) who is periodically referred to in the movie as resembling Colin Ferrel or James Dean--he doesn't. Finally, production values, story line, writing, acting, and directing are among some the the worst I've ever seen. Spare yourself.

It's actually a <2 (minus two)
phildeesnow12 November 2023
Yes there's no way to rate this with less than a star.

It's cute, average and uncut... And I'm talking about his "thing", not the movie.

It's absolutely pointless, just a travel journal of unknown people.

Annoying out of place music.

Badly edited and shot. Not even the Cinematography could be saved.

Imagine you find a lost camcorder from before the digital era, just to realize that the person who lost it was a very handsome guy, who loves to be naked and jerk every time he had a chance. Cool if it was a real porno, but this is pretentious and boring.

You might want to stick around just to find out why does he cry, every time he cums, but ask yourself if it's worth it.

Damn Tubi, for not letting me fast forward by only 30 seconds at the time.

No Thrills
mtsinara3 December 2022
How did this movie ever get labeled as a thriller? I must have fallen asleep during those thriller sequences. In other words, there are no thrilling parts, no suspenseful parts and not a mystery to be found. Unless you try to count the online event as the mystery. It is not a mystery but an unfortunate occurrence that anyone using the internet should be wise to. The movie is nothing more than a boring rendition of a Panamanian travelogue with some repulsive violence near the end.

If you're interested in seeing the lead, Matthew Leitch, in various states of undress or nakedness, then the movie does provide that. Otherwise, good luck at finding anything else in the movie that's worth the wasting of your time.

a journey through an exciting carnival
jamesv227 October 2009
As I watched Sabor, the first thing that came to mind is oh my god, that Matthew Leitch is one hot actor. His performance was riveting. I found the documentary style was fascinating. I found the carnival in Panama to be colorful and lively specially because of the high energy an colorful costumes. The ending was kinda shocking and amazing... I thought it was genius. I recommend this film because it very original and thought provoking. At first I wasn't so crazy about the colombian guy but as I thought about it his performance was very realistic. His character was believable as he was not a Hollywood type actor. I thought the story was so realistic you could not tell what was scripted and what was not. As I watched it on DVD, I would have really liked to have seen it on the big screen for it think it would have had a bigger impact. Some movies you just have to see them on the big screen and that's my preferred way I would have liked to have seen this.

Film Within a Film
gpswenson19 March 2024
The premise of the film is young, cocky Californian has been hired to shoot footage of the Carnival in Panama. He makes arrangements ahead of time to hook up with a woman he has met online but discovers he has been catfished after he arrives.

The blending of the story of what is happening in the Californian's life and the "documentary" he is being paid to film are woven together so completely that many people get sucked into believing it is just an odd travelogue. I was part of a film programming team that viewed this film as a prospective festival entry but most of the team felt this way. The style of the film is that masterful.

I do wonder if cutting back on the Carnival footage might have allowed the dramatic story to be clearer. You are really watching two films: One about the filmmaker and the other what the filmmaker is capturing.

Leitch is most of the film, and his portrayal of the confused, selfish California yuppy is multi-dimensional in that you see his swaggering and how that masks his insecurities and inner pain. The expression on his face in the final scene is haunting.

a - must see - for yourself
godscountry2 August 2009
Jorge Ameer's latest outing is as much fascinating as it is distinct in style. I saw this film at a theatre in Ft. Lauderdale and wondered why there were only evening shows, but as I began to watch I immediately realized why. With a reality/documentary (think "Quarantine") - follow your every move - photography, the film summarizes Brian's (played by the very talented Matthew Leitch) travels through Panama and the high energy, intensely beautiful and awesome carnival of Las Tablas. This film definitely made me want to make reservations for next years festivities. I have seen other Ameer films, but this one by far is his best. I was specially engaged in all of the hedonism and shameless pursuit of Brian's libido fulfillment. The images of the opening credits are most disturbing, yet quite allegorical and symbolic to Brian's plight in what I would call a most amazing vitriolic conclusion. What I found even more clever was the fluidity of the unfolding proceedings. It was hard to figure out what was scripted from what was improvised or true, an element I would have to say is an asset and a definite merit to the film. Don't think I should say much more about this without feeling like I'm giving the story away, so all I will say is see it for yourself.

Fun Filled,Interesting and Unexpected Journey through Panama!
dinvestor20052 July 2009
I enjoyed this movie, it had a lot of interesting twists to it. Very colorful and informative. It's a suspenseful and captivating journey with a young man's visit to an unfamiliar country and his experiences along the way.The story was a roller coaster ride of emotions. The characters were interesting and often not what you would expect. The scenes were real and unfiltered showing the heart and soul of Panama. Which made for an interesting story, not very predictable.I would have liked to have seen more background on the main character learned more history on him.Definitely will checkout future films from the young lead actor.Loved the previous works from the director Jorge Ameer. I would recommend this movie if you are captivated by the unexpected.

An adventurous journey through a visitors point of view
ghernandezpty5 February 2010
I heard about this film in the Panamanian media because there was scandal surrounding its release. I recently purchased the DVD not knowing what to expect. I live in Panama City but I'm from the town where this film was shot, Las Tablas, so I was compelled to see what all this film was is all about. I was very pleasantly surprise because I was proud to see both Panama and the carnival well represented here. If you have never been to the Carnival of Las Tablas, this would be a good film to watch to be familiar with it. the story is documentary style. The story follows the journey of a reporter who comes to Panama to do a video diary of his experience at carnival. He soon gets involved in the hype of the festivities and sooner than later ends up with some interesting experiences along the way. The film builds to a scandalous ending that is very unexpected and powerful. It leaves you wondering what happened and why. The film is very good yet very, very violent towards the ending but satisfying. If you are looking to experience the high energy and festivities of one of Panama's and Latin America's most popular events with an open mind and something different from the usual, you will find Sabor Tropical an fun inde movie to watch.

Destination: Fate
festivalmixmexico1 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Destino/ Destinations. Travels are the best school, used to say my grandmother, and Jorge Ameer is one director who's always traveling to tell us stories about the way places have an influence over our fates. In Spanish the world destination is similar to the one we use for fate (destino), and I'm sure it has been noticed by the director, who's fluent in both languages. However, these both words seem to have been taken seriously by him: in THE HOUSE OF ADAM, the mentioned house has a secret that defines its principal character. In THE SINGING FOREST, a supernatural experience links all if his characters to the Nazi Germany, and in SABOR TROPICAL, a travel is about to change the life of its main characters forever: what's nice and soft at the beginnings is transformed to a hard ending. With a beautiful performance of fantastic actor Matthew Litch (better known as the actor form the film AKA), SABOR TROPICAL is a bittersweet story of loneliness, desperation, and deception. A video diary that it's half a cautionary tale, half an ego trip, mixed with hot explicit sex scenes. It's the best film Jorge Ameer has brought us to his audience yet, and certainly a great love letter to Panamá's carnival!

disturbing and thought provoking. must see!
zombiegore23427 August 2009
Jorge Ameer does it again! A truly disturbing and thought provoking reality style thriller. One of Ameer's most intense and interesting films to date. Watching the main character evolve into the twisted human being he actually is a treat in itself. Mathew Leitch is a great lead, he plays a likable character that an everyday person could relate to...until we find out he has a much darker secret. Jose Rosete also gives an outstanding performance, there are some great moments between Rosete and Leitch that are extremely powerful. The ending will leave you speechless, the final shot sent shivers down my spine, highly recommended, go see it!!!

a cautionary tale to travelers
rosamiranda367 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
For those who don't travel often, yet are used to taking their bad habits with them into other cultures, here is film that you can use as a cautionary tale. The film starts out with the usual preparations for travel from Brian (played by Matthew Leitch) who's eagerness to meet local women online gets him into serious trouble. What makes this film work so well is the reality of the possibilities. Everything that happens to the main character could happen to you. What is especially disturbing is how many of us go to other countries without knowing much about the culture and laws and how exposed we could be to local organized crime. Unfortunately many suffer the consequences cause we become easy targets. This is what happened to our happy tourist Brian. He's like a college kid who goes to a spring break that turns sour. Some scenes were very hard to watch and excessive for my taste but that's just my personal opinion. However, I was able to get pass that because I was very much engaged in the story. Sabor is also a character study of how most of us use the camera and internet to communicate intimate information to someone we don't know, yet may seem trusting. This film should be seen specially because it is filled with some very dark and memorable moments. recommended.

Very good
marlonb-0452623 September 2017
I liked that it touches a subject that very little is recorded in films because it is a taboo for society. The classic man indecisive of what he wants or feels. At carnival you see a lot of alcohol and many things float. The Colombian was apparently a more sentimental guy and was more defined to what he wanted. Brian discharged his conflict with anger and for that reason he grabbed him and he enjoyed it. He is addicted to normal masturbation of us men. From criticism I would say that much of the film was left without subtitles. The initial part of the airport was very long and somewhat monotonous. Otherwise good

a too personal film
Kirpianuscus27 September 2022
The basic problem is the status of too very personal film of Sabor tropical. The good intentions are obvious but obvious is, in same measure, the narcissismus of main actor.

As intention, it is a (fake)documentary but only as intention. Not for not very inspired filming, not for interventions or for nakedness but for the feeling about a vacantion film, perfect to see near family and friends , source of jokes and good moments, fun and exclamations.

The bad thing - the film desires be more than that. And , maybe, in essence, this is the just only problem about it.

So, an easy film and, maybe, a happy / proud director about it.
