The 2016 awards season race just got a bit clearer with today’s announcement of the 32nd annual Film Independent Spirit Award nominees. Presented by actors Édgar Ramírez and Jenny Slate, this year’s nominees represent the best indie film artists of the year, as well as those who are now confirmed as major contenders in the upcoming SAG, Golden Globe, and Academy Awards. (For the last three years, the Best Feature winner at the Independent Spirit Awards—“12 Years a Slave,” “Birdman,” and “Spotlight”—went on to win big at the Oscars.) With six and five nods respectively, A24’s “Moonlight” and Roadside Attractions and Amazon Studios’ “Manchester by the Sea” have once again emerged as the leading indie films in the race. But in a surprise swell of support, another A24 film, “American Honey,” matched “Moonlight” ’s six nominations. Overall, the distributor left with 19 nods. The cast of “Moonlight,” Barry Jenkins...

But where was David Lindhagen!? The cast of 2011's Crazy, Stupid, Love reunited on Saturday, with Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore all connecting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The group of stars made up part of the cast of the romantic comedy, which followed the dissolution of the Weaver family after wife Emily's (Moore) affair. Fans will also remember Jacob (Gosling), the hunky and suave player who charms Cal Weaver's (Carell) daughter with his recreation of Dirty Dancing's famed lift. Gosling, Carell and Tomei were at the awards ceremony for their box office hit The Big Short,...

From the Gothams to the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Oscars? That's how the Gotham jury's ensemble award for "Spotlight" (November 6) could play out. Critics already love this acting tour-de-force; moviegoers and awards voters are sure to follow. The cast has opted to campaign in supporting categories for the Oscars (and there are no supporting categories at the Gothams). "Spotlight" got the biggest boost from the Gotham nominations (full list here), also scoring Best Feature and Screenplay nominations. Who else came out ahead, and will there be Oscar overlap? Not that much. Gotham winners could build momentum in certain races when they are announced on November 30. The real impact on Gotham nominee leaders "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" and "Tangerine," which are both small-scale indies that did not lure moviegoers to the box office, will be on the Indie Spirit Awards. Film Independent will reveal those nominations on Tuesday.

In some ways, the film Truth is the “other” film in this year’s awards race, which can be either a blessing or a curse, depending on the situation. It’s the “other” Cate Blanchett Oscar player besides Carol, and the “other” journalism tale this season besides Spotlight. I’ll have plenty more on both Carol and Spotlight in the weeks to come, trust me there (especially in the latter’s case), but today I want to look at James Vanderbilt’s Truth, which opens in limited release this week and is not just a vehicle for Blanchett, but for Robert Redford as well. Is it up to snuff for the Academy? Well, I’ll tell you a bit more below… The movie is an adaptation of the book by Mary Mapes and a look at the controversy surrounding those who worked at the news magazine show 60 Minutes and the CBS evening news.

Up&Comers Spotlight is a new recurring feature that highlights great performances by rising stars in both television and film. Beware of spoilers. It’s been about a week since “The 100″ aired its season finale and I just cannot stop thinking about it. A magnificent end to a great season. In addition, today is the one year anniversary of the series premiere. Basically, I have “The 100″ on the brain, so I decided to highlight the cast in the first Up&Comers Spotlight. Chicago – For a brief shining moment, it looked like the cast of 1999’s “American Pie” would be the break-out stars of the new millenium. Sadly, 13 years have passed and most of them haven’t fulfilled on their potential with a few never topping that first film, which is still a sweet, raunchy, comedy classic. Therefore, I’m sure most of the “Pie” kids were ecstatic that a fourth film, “American Reunion,” finally got off the ground, to be released on April 2nd, 2012. Before you catch up with them in a theater, catch up at home with the release of the first three films — the great “American Pie,” the decent “American Pie 2,” and the pretty-bad “American Wedding.”
American Pie
All three films have been given lavish treatment as Universal clearly thinks that the new movie is going to reignite interest in them either in a nostalgic generation or a new one.

SXSW announced its film lineup today, which is full of all kinds of features and documentaries. The big splashy Hollywood news is that the movie 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, will premiere at the fest as its Centerpiece Film. In addition, the closing-night film will be the music documentary Big Easy Express from Emmett Malloy.
One marquee movie with a Texas connection is the Dallas-set Killer Joe, reuniting Bug filmmaker William Friedkin and playwright Tracy Letts, and starring Matthew McConaughey (and that's not the only film he's in that will play SXSW). Other notable movies playing the fest include Bobcat Goldthwait's God Bless America, the Will Ferrell-starring Casa de mi Padre and Guy Maddin's Keyhole ... among many many others announced.
SXSW Film has no Lone Star States category this year, but the overall lineup of narrative and documentary features includes many local and state connections.

From the release:
The film, shot almost exclusively in New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood, is a chronicle of modern marriage, pointing out an essential truth: When you get married, you’re not just getting a husband or wife—you’re getting the family, the friends, and even the exes. With crackling humor and sharp insights into contemporary relationships, Burns tracks a newly wedded couple whose honeymoon period is upended by the arrival of the husband’s wild-child baby sister and the crumbling marriage of the wife’s meddlesome sister.
The cast also includes Caitlin Fitzgerald, Max Baker, Marsha Dietlein Bennett and Kerry Bishé.
