The Fight Machine is the second of two very different movies based on novels by Craig Davidson that Raven Banner debuted at this year’s edition of Fantasia. This one is adapted from his novel The Fighter. The other is The Breach, based on the novel of the same name by his perhaps more familiar pseudonym Nick Cutter.
Paul Harris comes from a rich family. He doesn’t have a care in the world until he mouths off to the wrong person and gets beaten bloody. Humiliated, he develops an obsession with bodybuilding and boxing, training under Lou. Rob Tully on the other hand comes from a working-class family and was, according to his father Reuben, born to fight. He trains with...

In true 80’s nostalgia fashion, I’ve been hyped about seeing this film since I’ve seen the poster. Yes, a poster sold me on the movie – just the way I grew up watching movies in the late 80’s & 90’s. Anchor Bay just announced the release date for the 80’s slasher homage, Lost After Dark.
If you thought the 80s were dead — think again! On September 1st, Anchor Bay Entertainment goes full 80s retro with Lost After Dark, a loving but harrowing homage that takes audiences back to the decade when slashers ruled the silver screen. The exciting directing debut of writer/director Ian Kessner, Lost After Dark proudly features visceral, old-school prosthetic “kills,” and pop songs pulsing to an electronic beat. So thrown on a pair of acid wash jeans and go full-on tubular with Lost After Dark! Srp is $26.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD, with pre-book on July 31st.

Trish Stratus puts her trademark moves on justice-fleeing fugitives in Bounty Hunters.
Let me start by saying that if I had to be tracked down and nabbed by some fortune-seeking mercenary, I wouldn’t mind if my pursuer was seven-time WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus as seen in her action movie debut Bounty Hunters.
Originally entitled Bail Enforcers, the 2011 film finds a group of down-on-their-luck bounty hunters, led by Jules Taylor (Stratus), hitting the jackpot one night when they pick up an informant with $100,000 on his head. But their world is quickly turned upside down when a gangland boss (Joe Rafla) offers them a million dollars in exchange for their bounty. When Jules and her partners refuse, the mob unleashes a trio of assassins to bring the bounty hunters down, and to get their man – dead or alive.

Director/writer: Neil Johnson.
Cast: Katharine McEwan, Don Scribner, Rochelle Vallese and DeeDee Bigelow.
Here is another entry into the alien invasion film genre with Alien Armageddon. This film follows Neil Johnson's previous film titled Nephilim (2007). This title recently had a World Premiere through video-on-demand August 1st. Phase 4 Films released this title and this reviewer wishes they had not. Perhaps the low production values did not deliver the film's message adequately. However, one message is clear to this film reviewer: Alien Armageddon is a really poor executed film. This film is one half prison drama and one half sci-fi melodrama. Neither of these genres really create much enthusiasm over here at 28Dla. So, in the end, Alien Armageddon introduces a new alien species with some weak acting, poorly dressed sets and an Anglo-Norma plotline that has been done better,...

Crystal Harris is yesterday’s news. Hugh Hefner‘s already moved on to another blonde, and she’s not Anna Sophia Berglund. Keeping true to his string of nearly identical girlfriends, Hef’s newest lady is Shera Bechard. He explained it all on Twitter when he tweeted about who exactly his mystery lady was, writing, “Shera is both our November 2011 Playmate & my new girlfriend…” That’s pretty clear, isn’t it? The Hef is taken. He’s sounding quite moony in his tweets to Shera writing endearments like, “It was a fun night, but we missed you, Shera” and “Goodnight, darling.”
In case you’re wondering, Bechard is also an actress who starred in a movie called Sweet Karma two years ago. And no, we haven’t heard of it and nor do we plan to seek it out. But we do wish Hef well with his new relationship. We...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) - Wasting no time after his "runaway bride" Crystal Harris made her grand exit, Hugh Hefner has lined up yet another blonde beauty he's calling his girlfriend.
After introducing Anna Sophia Berglund as his "best girl" last week, Hefner is now calling Canada-native Shera Bechard his "darling."
Bechard moved into the Playboy mansion back in March with her pets in tow. Like Berglund, Bechard is also 25. And Hefner is still 85.
Bechard is a model and an aspiring actress, who scored a role in 2009's "Sweet Karma," where she played a mute Russian girl.

The Sweet Karma Trailer has premiered. Andrew Thomas Hunt‘s Sweet Karma (2009) movie trailer stars Shera Bechard, John Tokatlidis, Frank J. Zupancic, Christian Bako, and Laura McLean. Sweet Karma‘s plot synopsis: “Sweet Karma…follows Karma Balint a shy, mute Russian girl whose sister Anna left for Canada with bright hopes of making some money for the two of them. When Karma discovers that Anna’s body has been found in the woods, the apparent victim of a Russian mafia hit, Karma sets off to infiltrate the criminal underworld to avenge her sister. Her journey takes her through the twisted underbelly of society leaving behind death and mayhem in her wake.”
This film looks as though it has a little Enter the Void, mixed with some elements from Taken, Human Trafficking, and X. The mute angle should throw a twist on how Karma Balint communicates with people she does not know.

In the new indie horror flick If a Tree Falls, more kids get in a car for a scenic trip through the countryside and make it to their destination, happy and unscathed. Of course I'm bullshitting. That would be a completely awful movie, no?

Phase 4 will release the cleverly titled, exploitation-flavored revenge thriller Sweet Karma on DVD on June 14.
Shera Bechard is a hot woman who kills bad men in the revenge thriller Sweet Karma.
Directed and co-written by Andrew Thomas Hunt, the independent film’s story centers on Karma Balint (Playboy Magazine’s November 2010 Playmate of the Month Shera Bechard), a shy, mute Russian girl whose sister Anna (Patricia Stasiak) left for Canada with bright hopes of making some money for the two of them to share. When Karma discovers that Anna’s body has been found in the woods, the apparent victim of a Russian mafia hit, she sets off to infiltrate Toronto’s strip club and sex trade scene and the criminal underworld to avenge her sister’s death. Needless to say, she uses her charms and some serious firepower to get the job done.
Hmmm … I Spit on Your Grave meets Showgirls,...

Who says sex doesn't sell? On the eve of Canadian revenge thriller Sweet Karma's Us release on VOD (November 1st) and DVD (February 22nd) word is out that star Shera Bechard - a best actress winner at Fantastic Fest 2009 - will appear as Playboy's November Playmate Of The Month. The result? The film has risen 6258% in popularity on the IMDb this week and currently sits with an IMDb Moviemeter rating of 186. In terms of IMDb searches this places the film ahead of The Matrix (187), Black Swan (190), 300 (197), The Hurt Locker (198) and District 9 (201). And it's just three behind Pixar's Up, which I find amusing. Ol' Hef and his empire are still pretty virile, it seems.
For those curious you can check a pair of (fully clothed) shots of Bechard from the photo spread below. Photos courtesy of Playboy.

Karma (Shera Bechard) is, as the title suggests, a sweet girl and to add to her vulnerable appearance (the girl you see on the cover isn’t the girl we’re introduced to at the start of the film) she is also mute.
Upon learning that her sister is dead, most likely murdered, she seeks revenge against the people responsible, stating “I have nothing more to lose”. Her sister had travelled from their home in Russia to Canada with the promise of work there as a housemaid. This was not the case though and the group of gangsters who arranged her travel actually deal in human trafficking and prostitution. Bringing girls from Russia to Canada with the promise of housemaid jobs they coerce them into working as strippers and prostitutes and get them hooked on drugs.
Infiltrating the group of gangsters Karma begins taking them out one-by-one as she exacts bloody and brutal vengeance.

The characters in Dogtooth believe that flowers are called zombies, cats eat people, aeroplanes are toys and Frank Sinatra is their uncle. Welcome to the lives of three young adults living in a seemingly Utopian compound safe-guarded by their parents/gaolers.
Yorgos Lanthimos‘ film is easily one of the best of the year. It isn’t an easy watch – by no means – and its forays into incest and violence could make one very queasy, but at heart it is a devious black comedy.
Quite why the mother and father have raised their children in this way is never clearly explained. Is it some mad perversion or an ideological standpoint based on what they see as the corrupting power of society and culture?
The performances – especially Mary Tsoni and Aggeliki Papoulia as the daughters – are magnificent and wholeheartedly committed. It’s no cold, clinical distanced movie either. You’ll find yourself...

One of the goals of Montreal's Fantasia Festival is to support the rising generation of Canadian genre film makers, to seek out new talent that may be missed or overlooked by other events. And one of the big successes on that front in last year's festival was Sweet Karma, a low budget revenge tale produced by Chad Archibald that overcame its budget limits to become a pretty compelling piece of work and a minor hit at the festival that rode the wave of Montreal support down to Austin's Fantastic Fest where it had a similar reception.
Well, Archibald is back at Fantasia this year, this time as the director of Neverlost, a dark psychological thriller that balances its low budget with big ideas. Here's an except of the Fantasia guide entry for it:

More goods are rolling in from the Fantasia Film Festival 2010, this time in the form of some new stills and a pretty damned cool one-sheet for the flick Neverlost.
Fantasia Description
One of the most tightly scripted and boldly designed Canadian genre films since Vincenzo Natali’s Cube (1997), Neverlost follows the psychic meltdown of sleep-deprived, depressive, thirty-something failed scriptwriter Josh Higgins, spiraling into matrimonial hell with his embittered wife of two years, Megan. The young couple struggle to co-exist in a poisoned climate of frayed nerves, resentment and incommunicability. Think the couple in last year’s Fantasia presentation Combat Shock (Buddy Giovinazzo, 1986), minus the monster baby, and with a little less apartment squalour. To cure his insomnia, Josh convinces his doctor to prescribe some sleeping pills. Josh soon becomes addicted to the little blue pills, not so much for the sleep but for the euphoric dream fantasies that they induce,...

If there's one thing I know about film festivals, it's that being content with having your film play for an enthusiastic audience is for losers. Chugging a beer on stage in front of a cheering crowd after winning is for winners. You can tell that I'm right because the word "winning" is a close cousin of "winners." Celebrating the art of the film is one thing, but damn it, it's about taking home the coveted cup. Two or three nights ago (the details are hazy), Fantastic Fest Co-founder Tim League emceed an awards ceremony that featured some Festival fans, filmmakers and the people who wandered in already inebriated and looking for the karaoke party. You can guess which group I was in, and, yes, I stayed at the ceremony despite a shocking lack of amateurs singing "Baby Got Back." Also, I had to present all of the awards for the Fantastic Features Category. There...

For those of you who weren't in Austin, TX from September 23-30, you missed out. Fantastic Fest lived up to its name and presented some of the newest, most anticipated, and best films of the year. From the comfort and coolness of the Alamo Drafthouse (which serves Awesome food during movies) to the palatial Paramount Theater, Austin showed that it knows how to treat fans of genre films.
Think about it: Seven days filled with movies like Zombieland, Paranormal Activity, and Survival of the Dead, side-by-side with some truly creative short films, foreign films, low-budget indie movies, and stars, all put within a mile of each other. It was a movie-lover's paradise. But alas, all good things must come to an end (until next year), but not without a few parting shots.

If I were asked to put together the perfect man night, by whom I don't know, it would inevitably involve Jack Daniels, local Austin beef ribs the size of a cruise ship, and a 70's revenge film. I love the ever-living hell out of movies like Death Wish, Lady Snowblood, Get Carter, and Thriller: A Cruel Picture (also known as They Call Her One Eye). The film Taken actually feels like a throwback to the balls-to-the-wall revenge films of the era and I will watch that movie at the drop of a hat (that is, if I really want to take revenge on you for dropping my hat). Sweet Karma, by all rights, should have been something I loved for exactly the same reason. I'm getting ahead of myself. Sweet Karma is the story of a gorgeous, mute girl from Russia whose sister gets lured into the world of sex trafficking. With...

Fantastic Fest in Austin is one of the best festivals in the country devoted to genre films. Previously, we brought you news about the first round of films scheduled to show during the fest. And now, there’s even more news to share today, including some great guests and some relly cool films we’re looking forward to seeing.
But really, I probably can’t do all this info proper justice (given my time constraints today at least) so I’ll just let Tim League, director/co-founder of the Fest, speak for himself via the latest Fest press release:
George Romero Returns to Fantastic Fest!
George RomeroIn 2007, Fantastic Fest was honored by the presence of one of the true masters of horror, George A. Romero. Now, two years later, we are thrilled to welcome back the undisputed champion of all things undead for his latest blood-drenched thrillride, Survival Of The Dead.

The third day of Fantasia we woke up late, primed for a weekend full of incredible screenings. First up was the Tremors meets Eight Legged Freaks giant bug invasion flick Infestation.
The movie is typical for the genre and doesn’t bring a whole lot of new ideas to the table, but it’s a fun film, noteworthy perhaps for the almost freakish similarity the main character has to John Cusack. Read our Infestation review here.
Up next we saw a portion of Sion Sono’s latest epic, Love Exposure. Why only a portion, you ask? Because the damn movie is four hours long! I’m hesitant to critique the film given we didn’t experience the whole thing, but what we saw seemed to be the apotheosis of Sono’s infatuation with the perversion of family, religion, sexuality, and love. Given the grandeur of the themes, perhaps the four-hour running time is warranted.
