It’s not easy to sustain a beloved series over nine films and 43 years and many directors. But all the principally credited directors of the core “Star Wars” films, plus “Rogue One” and “Solo,” have been men.
Enthusiasm for the franchise seems to be waning slightly, and “Rise of Skywalker” became the first of the sequel trilogy not to rate an A CinemaScore from filmgoers. Though it’s unclear when we’ll see the next “Star Wars” feature film, there’s no doubt the saga could use a major shot of creative vision — so why not hire a woman the next time around?
Here are 15 directors — some obvious and some less so — who could put a distinct stamp on the series.

Today marks the release of actor/filmmaker Zach Braff’s second directorial outing in Wish I Was Here, and it’s only his second film in a decade, after making his writing and directing debut with Garden State. During the past decade, he hasn’t even done too much in the way of movies, even after he left his hit television show Scrubs. Still, he’s got a new flick in theaters and I’m thrilled to have him back. Oddly enough though, a few articles this week have sort of bemoaned his return, so I wanted to counteract that negativity with some positivity, since I’m quite fond of his talents and hope he’s here to stay now. So, once again, I’m providing the optimist’s counterpoint. Braff spent the past ten years trying to get different projects off the ground, but they just never came to pass.

Watch: 'Scrubs' Reunion! Zach Braff and Donald Faison Sing 'Guy Love' at 'Wish I Was Here' Screening
Zach Braff is trying to be taken seriously as a director and actor these days (I mean, look at "The High Cost of Living"), but he's never been above returning to his roots. Braff took his time leaving his hit NBC-then-abc sitcom, sticking around for a few episodes after his tearful goodbye episode in 2009 to help usher in the new kids. He's also appeared on "Cougar Town," a show from "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence, alongside former co-star (and Lawrence's wife) Christa Miller. Now, Braff has gotten back together with his onscreen Bff, Donald Faison. The two reunited Turk and Jd for one more song (okay, there will probably be more) after a screening of the duo's new film "Wish I Was Here," which Braff wrote and directed and co-stars Faison. They put their all into "Guy Love," even blocking it properly on the stage, and the crowd at the Paramount seems to love it.

Lifetime has ordered a TV movie adaptation of V.C. Andrews' "Flowers in the Attic," which will star Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn, The Wrap reports.
Graham will play the recently widowed Corrine, who takes her four children (Chris, Cathy, Cory and Carrie) to stay with her parents at their mansion in Virginia. Because of a dark family secret, Corrine's mother, Olivia (Burstyn) insists that the four children must be kept locked in the attic where their grandfather won't see them, leaving them to care for themselves after Corrine's visits become increasingly infrequent. After years trapped alone together, the eldest children, Chris and Cathy, start taking a page out of Cersei and Jaime Lannister's playbook, if you know what we mean ...
The TV movie will be executive produced by Merideth Finn ("The Rite"), Michele Weiss ("Little Children") and Charles W. Fries ("Screamers"), Deborah Chow ("The High Cost of Living") is...

Disney returns to Oz with a prequel this time in Oz the Great and Powerful.
Based on author Frank L. Baum’s classic children’s stories, the fantasy movie imagines how the illusionist Oz might have made it to the magical land.
Screenwriters Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Nine Yards) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Rise of the Gaurdians) start their story with Oscar Diggs (James Franco, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), a.k.a. the small-time circus magician Oz the Great and Powerful. He’s more con artist than magician, and when his dubious ethics push him into a hot air balloon to avoid a beating, Oz gets whisked away from dusty Kansas to a magical land.

Though "Scrubs" ended its impressive, nearly decade-long run three years ago, its star Zach Braff has only done a TV cameo here and there, and wowed in the little-seen 2010 Canadian drama The High Cost of Living, but his next part in Oz: The Great and Powerful will be his most visible role in years, even if he is playing a CGI monkey for most of the movie.
The actor plays mutton-chopped assistant Frank, who helps James Franco's small-time charlatan with big-time dreams pull off carnival shows in the black and white Kansas-set opening, and then turns into Oz's flying primate pal Finley when the top-hatted magician blows into the wondrous, chromatic town that bears his name.
It's a candy-coloured, 3D world that director Sam Raimi creates for the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and Braff admitted he was enchanted by the elaborate sets where he and Franco...

Welcome to Fsr’s first DVD column for October 2011! There are lots of interesting titles hitting shelves today including two third or fourth generation sequels that surprise by being far more entertaining than anyone expected them to be. In addition to Scream 4 and Fast Five several smaller films are coming out too including the giallo-inspired art film Amer, Zach Braff’s indie drama The High Cost of Living, the sweetly comic UK coming of age film Submarine, and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Buck Buck Brannaman has a special appreciation for the equine species that helps him understand and communicate with horses and their owners. He’s been labeled a real life “horse whisperer” and even assisted Robert Redford on his film of the same name, but his life wasn’t always a success story. This documentary takes a man and a subject so purely...

Simply put, I like Zach Braff. I like him as a writer (even though he's only written one film). I like him as a director (even though he's only directed one film). I like him as a mixtape maker. And I like him as a dramatic actor. Which is why I wish the quadruple threat would make more films.

I have a weakness for Zach Braff and the music of Joshua Radin. Maybe that's why I'm showing you this trailer for The High Cost Of Living. Basically Braff's character is much like his character in Garden State, just a little bit older. He's the single guy with no direction in life, partying it up, and at a constant stand still. The moment that changes everything is when he hits a girl with his car. To top it off, the chick is pregnant. Braff's character ends up spending time with her,...

Tribeca: Tell us about The High Cost of Living. Deborah Chow: I describe the film as a dark love story. It's really about two people who meet under circumstances that are very intense, after a car accident. It's about trust, and trying to live authentically, and what that means and all the choices that entails. Tribeca: Where did the inspiration for the story come from? Deborah Chow: Fortunately, given the story, nothing is from my real life. [laughs] Otherwise I'd be in deep trouble. But it was a variety of things - I worked on the script for a long time; it was in development for five years. It evolved from where it started to where it ended. There wasn't one good inspiration, because where we ended was so different from where we started. But I would say there were two main inspirations: the first was Montreal. I started with the city,...

Dear Mpi / Dark Sky: The audience at the Toronto International Film Festival has spoken and they would like you to put Jim Mickle's Stake Land on as many screens as possible at your earliest opportunity. Thank you.
The Toronto International Film Festival announced their award winners today and taking home the big guns - the Cadillac People's Choice Awards - were Tom Hooper's The King's Speech for the main festival prize and Jim Mickle's Stake Land for the Midnight Madness award. Though I missed King's Speech I can definitely say that the award to Stake Land is very well deserved, Mickle delivering on the promise of Mulberry Street with a picture that places him on a very short list of the best American horror directors today.
Taking other awards were Vincent Biron's Les Fleurs De L'Age (Best Canadian Short), Deborah Chow's The High Cost Of Living...

Deborah’s dark drama, High Cost of Living, also written by her, centre’s on the burgeoning relationship between an unlikely pair. Nathalie (Isabelle Blais) is expecting her first child and Henry (Zach Braff) is on his way to his next drug deal. Their paths fatefully collide one night in an event that irrevocably changes their lives.
“Just getting into the festival was a feat unto itself–and so it’s a crazy unexpected privilege to win this award,” says a beaming Deborah. “There were so many great Canadian first features in the festival this year, that it’s truly an honour to receive this award amidst such outstanding company.”
The Skyy Vodka Award For Best Canadian First Feature Film also carries a cash prize of $15,000.
“We are thrilled to have our film complimented by the prestigious Skyy Vodka Award for Best Canadian First Feature,” says Filmoption VP Andrew Noble.

The High Cost of Living is directed by Deborah Chow, making her directorial debut, and stars Zach Braff, Isabelle Blais, Patrick Labbe, Aimee Lee, Julian Lo, Kyle Switzer and Sean Lu.
