Kerry Condon follows up her Oscar nomination with a thankless piece of Blumhouse schlock that tries, and fails, to make swimming pools scary
It’s long been an extreme palate cleanser, the first weekend of January following a season of weighty awards fare with a froth of schlock horror, from fine dining to a guilty stop at McDonald’s after. Masterworks such as The Devil Inside (6%), Texas Chainsaw 3D (19%), The Forest (10%) and The Unborn (10%) have all crept out of the gate in previous years, often unscreened for critics, and despite a consistent lack of quality, the practice has become profitable, audiences happy to see in the new year with the very worst the industry has to offer. Then last year, there was an unlikely win with sly evil doll horror M3gan, bucking the trend as not only a major commercial smash but also a critical one, and backers, horror hit-factory Blumhouse,...

Netflix is reshuffling its streaming offerings once again, and the latest round of movies set to leave the platform includes a few new horror classics. More specifically, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch in September, you'll have to cross Oren Peli's 2009 horror phenomenon "Paranormal Activity" off your to-watch list before then, as it's due to leave the streamer at the end of this month.
"Paranormal Activity" may not be the most enduringly scary horror touchstone of the past two decades (its slow burn scares were polarizing even upon initial release), but it's certainly among the most replicated. The shoestring-budget flick about a couple who set up security cameras to pinpoint the source of unusual happenings in their home was inescapable upon its release, earning nearly $200 million at the box office and spawning six sequels and spinoffs and counting. Along with J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield," the film...

Movies about possession and exorcism must scratch a very particular itch for American viewers. Going back to the mother of that horror subgenre, "The Exorcist," you can see one of the biggest box office hits of 1973, and in the fifty years since, many movies have played with that premise. A filmmaker can do it relatively cheaply, often just needing to rely on fearless performers willing to contort themselves and speak in tongues. And seeing an ordered world enter total disarray is what horror is all about.
William Brent Bell's 2012 film "The Devil Inside" took that to heart, dealing with the threat of possession through a mockumentary, found-footage lens. In the movie's universe, it's a documentary about Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) as she investigates her mother, particularly the grisly murders she committed when Isabella was a child. The mockumentary takes the form not just of a horror movie, but of an expose,...

Devastated by the loss of their unborn baby, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child. At the orphanage, both feel drawn to a little girl (Isabelle Fuhrman) named Esther, and soon the couple take their new daughter home. After escaping from a psychiatric facility in Estonia, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost.
“There’s always been something wrong with Esther,” says the tagline on the poster for William Brent Bell‘s brand new psychological horror film Orphan: First Kill, which serves as a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, which features one of the most insanely brilliant twists in film history.
The tagline of this film is absolutely true, as well. This tightly constructed 99-minute thrill-ride is a gritty, thrilling, and chillingly dark exploration of Esther’s origins, brought to life beautifully by a sharp script and a powerful performance from Isabelle Fuhrman,...

A muddled execution undercuts laudable ambitions in the latest effort from director William Brent Bell, who previously demonstrated his talent for turning low-budget horror films into major commercial hits with such movies as The Devil Inside and The Boy. The filmmaker mines deeper emotional terrain than usual with Separation, which attempts to inject scares into a Kramer vs. Kramer-inspired scenario. But the film squanders its intriguing set-up and terrific performances by devolving into familiar genre tropes. Not that it will prevent horror-starved audiences from flocking to see it on the big screen thanks to the further lifting of pandemic restrictions.

While the last decade that Jaume Collet-Serra excelled in providing a genuine Hitchcockian vision to B-movie concepts, it was 2009’s Orphan that served as a notable breakout. Telling the story of a couple who adopts a nine-year-old girl harboring secrets of her own, it was a stellar showcase for the director to flex his psychological horror muscles. Now, over a decade later, a prequel is moving forward.
Sadly, Collet-Serra will not be returning to the director’s chair, giving the reins to William Brent Bell. However, star Isabelle Fuhrman––who is now 23––will be returning to the role of Esther, Deadline reports. One may wonder how Fuhrman will be embodying the role of someone younger than nine, and it’s reported that the production, which is now underway in Winnipeg, will be utilizing “forced perspective shooting and a world-class makeup team.”

Looks like something is still wrong with Esther.
Isabelle Fuhrman, who broke out in Hollywood as the lead of the disturbing 2009 hit “Orphan,” will reprise her role in an upcoming prequel to the film.
Fuhrman played Esther, an Eastern European child adopted by parents (played by Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga) overcoming an unspeakable loss of their own. It earned $80 million worldwide on a reported $20 million budget.
While the movie received mixed reviews, it was largely credited with delivering a twist that broke new ground in the sub-genre of disturbed little kids — Esther was not a child at all, but an adult woman with primordial dwarfism masquerading as a nine-year-old. This made her attempts to split up her parents and eliminate her siblings all the more sinister and unforgettable.
While the prequel’s plot is under wraps, Fuhrman will return as star and associate producer on the project. William Brent Bell...

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. As well as reportedly working on a number of Batman-focused series, the WarnerMedia streamer is also absorbing shows from DC Universe, and funding the Snyder Cut of Justice League. We now know what’s coming to HBO Max in September, and there’s plenty there for subscribers to sink their teeth into.
The big original series highlight next month is the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves, which explores two androids raising human children. Created by Adam Guzikowski, the program could be one of HBO Max’s first big hits with critics and audiences, and is set to arrive on September 3rd. It’s always interesting to see which original horror films get sequels. Critical acclaim often fades into the background, as commercial success pushes production companies forward in making these new films. Films that get panned by critics end up having two, three, or four sequels, while individual critical darlings are one-and-done. In this case, “The Boy,” which came out in 2016 and panned universally by critics, looks to be given a second chance in the form of “Brahms: The Boy II.”

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

Sony/Screen Gems’ “The Grudge” has now joined an infamous list of movies by becoming the 20th film to receive an F in the CinemaScore audience poll.
Directed by Nicolas Pesce and produced by horror maven Sam Raimi, the film was an attempt to revive Takashi Shimizu’s famed horror series about the vengeful ghost of a woman who kills anyone who enters the home where she was murdered and spreads her curse to the various murder scenes. First released in 2002, Shimizu directed an American remake for Sony in 2004, the events of which occur alongside this new film starring Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho and Betty Gilpin.
But the film’s violent nature and inability to add anything new to the “Grudge” formula has resulted in it being panned by both audiences and critics.

Landry does what he wants and on Knightfall Season 2 Episode 3 he wanted to be a superhero.
But as sometimes happens with impossible dreams, he failed until the real superhero of the hour showed him how it's done.
We knew it wouldn't take long before Talus and Landry made a connection.
Landry's ill-fated attempt to take down the Luciferians on his own in order to spare the lives of his brother Templars provided that opportunity for connection.
Talus might have acted like a hardass to Landry, but deep down, he liked what he saw. He knew Landry had the heart and soul of a Templar, he just needed to get his head out of his ass.
Going after Luciferians and hoping to get killed wasn't the way to do it.

Knightfall Season 2 Episode 3
“Only God decides whether we live or die.”
For a time, “Faith” comes across as the prototypical setup episode that presages the calm before the storm, and while that’s certainly an accurate description, there’s no doubt Knightfall saves the best for last this week. Though Landry’s seemingly futile attempts to satisfy Initiate Master Talus’ exacting standards play at the center of the season two narrative, it’s the fortuitous return to importance of former Templar Gawain that reminds us of the physical and emotional toll becoming one of Christ’s soldiers takes on these men. Producer Mark Vahradian drills down into the making of Pet Sematary
This article contains spoilers for Pet Sematary.
Mark Vahradian has been a producer or executive producer on the Transformers franchise, as well as movies like Deepwater Horizon, Salt, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and more. He’s also produced horror films such as 1408 and The Devil Inside, but now he wades into Stephen King territory as a producer on the new adaptation of the author’s classic 1983 novel Pet Sematary.
Like producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and screenwriter Jeff Buhler, Vahradian felt the gravity of adapting one of King’s darkest and best-known novels, especially since there was already a film version in 1989 that has been generally held in solid regard.
But this grim tale of an innocent family torn asunder by unexpected death, grief and a hidden, ancient burial ground suffused with a malevolent power was...

All Dean wanted was to play a game of Mousetrap and eat some popcorn.
Unfortunately, Nick returned on Supernatural Season 14 Episode 17 and turned Dean's game night into a nightmare.
It was always expected that somehow Lucifer would return, but now that Jack burned Nick to a crisp, that vessel might no longer be viable.
I say "might" because we saw in the previews for Supernatural Season 14 Episode 18 that Nick looks alive and well -- although at this point we don't know if it's still Nick or Lucifer reborn.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 1 Episode 2 Review: City Council
Things were never going to turn out well for Jack. He's been acting strange for a while, and after he killed that snake guy, he's never been the same.
Castiel knew there was a problem but wanted to fix it himself without telling the Winchesters.

These vampires are something else.
On What We Do In The Shadows Season 1 Episode 2, the vampires begin their attempt at world domination in the most ridiculous of ways, but it's not going as well as they expected.
Well, actually, they think their plans are moving along brilliantly, but they're all too dumb to realize they are heading towards a big fail.
Nandor continues to steal the show, but both Lazlo and Nadja are growing on me especially when they do their interviews with the documentary crew.
Even Colin had some good moments.
It didn't seem as if Nandor's spell on Doug Peterson worked at first, but Nandor knew it would work -- as long as Guillermo stopped interrupting him.
Peterson turned into a madman at the special council meeting.
But his crazy rants did nothing to advance the vampires' objectives.

You don’t have to be a horror aficionado to know that corpses are scary. The lifeless husk of a human being, the rapidly decaying meat suit that housed all our thoughts and memories, is a brutal reminder of our fleeting mortality. So it stands to reason that a film like “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” about a woman working in a morgue where one of the corpses refuses to stay still, would be pretty darned scary. If only in principle.
And yes, that’s true. And only in principle. “The Possession of Hannah Grace” takes a concept so unsettling it’s already been turned into one great movie — “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” — and turns it into a dreary horror thriller, without any of those pesky thrills.
“Hannah Grace” begins with an exorcism scene so mechanical that it plays like a last-minute reshoot. Drab tones, rigid shafts of sunlight...

Paramount Pictures is in early negotiations with Chris Pratt to star in a movie reboot of “The Saint,” two decades after Val Kilmer’s thriller and 50 years after Roger Moore’s TV series.
Pratt’s deal is not closed. He became a worldwide star after headlining Disney-Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and its upcoming sequel (2019). He also starred in “Passengers” with Jennifer Lawrence, and long-running NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation.”
The studio secured a deal for book series rights in 2016 and set up a producing deal with Lorenzo di Bonaventura with the goal of starting an action franchise.
“The Saint” is based on Leslie Charteris’ book series, which follow the debonair Simon Templar character first introduced in the 1928 novel “Meet the Tiger,” followed by “Enter the Saint” in 1930. Templar stole from corrupt politicians and warmongers, leaving a calling card of a stick figure with a halo.
