THE CANTONESE is a very ordinary kung fu flick from Taiwan, making up in enthusiasm what it lacks in budget. The locations are nice to look at but the action is strictly routine, although plentiful. Barry Chan is the usual erstwhile hero tackling with various criminal types who ends up having to battle for his life against them; the main bad guy is a suavely-dressed scarred villain, but otherwise this is stuff you've seen play out countless times. The main point of interest, for me, was seeing stock villain actor Lung Fei getting to play a good guy for a change.
