If you like to watch original movies with ideas that go beyond what your typical mainstream horror audience is used to, then a film like Fragments Of A Ghoulish mind might be right up your alley.
There are some scenes in this movie that I can easily see will be controversial, like a skeleton being used to assault an escort worker and a killer that digs up human skulls to keep for a variety of creepy reasons. If you can stomach the couple pieces of hard to watch realistic stuff, the rest of it plays like a slasher thriller type with a variety of horror homages and fun, sometimes really wacky or creepy scenes.
It's basically about Chloe, a preteenage girl who unintentionally puts herself and her mother in grave peril with a wacky vengeful man who her mom fired from his job. Chloe's actions result in a traumatic home break in that could have ended with Chloe and her mom getting murdered. The trauma of this whole crazy situation eats on Chloe's conscience and the shame she feels from being duped by a psycho ultimately motivates her to attempt tracking down this creep so she can put a bullet in his brain.
The creep is a wacky man named Henry who becomes violent when under the constant stress of his needy disabled domineering grandmother. He looks to sexual gratifications through media to satiate his dark impulses until it isn't enough to keep him from acting out. His fantasies are out of control. Like seriously out of control! Think John Gacy meets Bozo the clown on some really potent sticky icky. He plays both sides of the coin. Serious when he needs to be and straight up insane when he wants to be.
Henry's fantasies and Chloe's nightmares sort of intersect leading to some rather wild scenarios. One unlucky jerk gets his forehead bashed into pieces with a spanner until his brains protrude from the big nasty wound and some of Chloe's nightmares seem like homages to films like Nightmare On Elm Street, except the villain of her twisted dreams is Henry and he's always trying to kill or mutilate her and her mom. These nightmares give Chloe the fuel she needs to seek out the real Henry and attempt to put him down.
While you find some of the drawbacks of indie films here, like a largely unknown cast and a few awkward situations, overall it has pretty good production values, some nifty special effects at times and a rather unique storyline for how the main characters come into each others lives. Many of the actors, like young Chloe do a nice convincing job and keep me interested to find out what will become of her. The villain Henry is an oddball collection of quirky, creepy, goofy, and even spooky. He's kind of like a chunky Norman Bates on LSD or something. At times he is over the top and other times he is creepily serious. Of course by the end you will find out why.
I have to give this one an A for effort. It kept me entertained for an hour and a half and part of it was something original which you don't get much of today unless you look into indie movies.
