spectacular ending
nerrdrage29 February 2024
Pretty much what you'd expect of ATLA's season finale. All the characters get their moments and then some; unexpected elements are tossed into the battle, which changes things immensely (no pun intended); a lot of eye-popping, amazing action without letup; and at the end, the characters are positioned for the story to pick back up with the second season.

This series has apparently done well for Netflix so we don't have to worry whether there will be a second season. Overall, I think they did a nice job editing and remixing first and even second season episodes to craft a wonderful story. There were many new elements and scenes that were not in the original, focused on the Fire Nation characters and story, that added depth and interest.

The only worry is, the writers seem to be more interested in the Fire Nation than in Aang's story. If you know the outlines of the Hero's Journey archetype, you already know Aang's story. The Fire Nation is more of a wild card and probably more interesting to write/ expand upon.

"Something that shouldn't be here"... Great episode with (unfortunately) some weird moments.
tslstudio26 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Overall again good vibes, but same decisions are a bit off.

The episode is general got great moments, the battle itself, even though it was a mess sometimes was really 12+, definitely not a kids show. Which was the whole point, everyone never fought a war before, and now they saw what comes with it... was isn't nice, of course.

Also we got enough "classic moments" We saw Katara fighting Zuko, we saw Zuko fighting Zhao which was good to see! , Aang turning into a giant spirit monster (with a bit more explanation this time) and the sacrifice of Yue etc. It was all there!

Also a great addition was the whole plot with Ozai and Azula with a little twist at the end revolving Omashu... which was a nice twist!

Now to the 'weird' parts... first of the all, the air balloon.

It should up in this episode and it just was sooo out of place.

First of all you can talk about how if an air balloon should hold out in the air at the like the coldest place on the planet in the first place.

Second the whole air balloon with the fleet is the whole plot twist of The Invasion... which they can still do of course with the ships, since we only saw the balloon this episode... but still little lame.

Next is how they are probably going to skip the whole library episode in book 2 earth. Firstly, we already saw Wan Shi Tong in the spiritworld.... and now Zhao got his information about the spirits from the fire sages archive not... not the secret library how found. Zhao is talking about destiny... which fits with him finding a secret library with information only he knows!... but how is something destiny when a fire sage just gives you the information!!!

Also how is Sokka going to find the information about the solar eclipse, we will see.

"You've learned some new tricks" Now this part... a quote Zuko uses in his battle with Katara.

My problem... how did Katara learn new tricks!? Because she didn't get training at all during her time at the Northern water tribe!

As we saw in the last episode, Pakku still doesn't want to train her.

In the episode we got the whole 'women can fight' part were the women of the tribe join in the battle convincing Pakku, which is okay... and the master Katara find is herself... because Pakku and the others see her as a waterbending master already.

Still, I think he should've trained her at least some things in prep for the battle... I mean Katara was ending up as a waterbending master anyway (also in the original series) so why changing it up that no-one teaches her!? No it kinda doesn't make sense...

Luckily this episode fixes the whole Aang doesn't learn a thing about the other elements in the first book. Since they now got a plan of Katara learning Aang waterbending, and he's going to earthbend in Omashu! Which finally sounds like a plan.

Which actually makes me look forward to the next book!

My expectations, Omashu episode-> Toph episode -> Dessert episode (with some way of getting the fire nation info?) -> Appa stolen episode -> Going to Ba Sing Se episode -> 3 Ba Sing Se episodes (Drill, Laogai Lake, Earth King and finale battle mixed together). Seems reasonable for 8 episodes, I guess.

Edit: also worthy to mention, I really like that we finally a more emotional interaction between Katara and Aang!

Such a great finale!
and_mikkelsen26 February 2024
I am so happy thry managed to nail the finale episode and make it tense, exciting, shocking and emotional! I pretty much got some of the same feelings as when watching the cartoon, while other parts made me feel different, but in a good way!

This was a cinematic experience! I felt like watching a movie! Everything was TOP quality! The action was great, the level of destruction was convincing and Aangs legendary Avatar state, was just as crazy as I hoped for!

All the themes and storylines came together nicely! They did a great job of showing the burden of being The Avatar, themes of sacrifice etc!

The characters only got better and really grew on me once i got used to them!

Overall a surprisingly good adaptation! The smutte material is legendary, but I think they did a great job! I am actually excited for future seasons! Perhaps a 10 episode season for book two, and then have book 3 split in two, to give them time to do the final episodes justice!

What an Ending
mitchellfsledge26 February 2024
This wasn't the show I thought it was going to be. Beyond shattered my expectations and there's so much heart into these characters. The season finale was beyond amazing in every single way. The ending had its own spin and different direction from the original but at the same time were smart changes. If you expected a copy of the original that's boring and that's what the original is for. I watched both and I genuinely liked the live action better. Amazing world building what they did was everything I wanted and more. The characters I absolutely adored in the original are just as strong in the live action. No show is perfect but this ending was.

Spectacular season finale. This is how it's done.
terrylarosa26 February 2024
Looks like the whiner crybabies still keep on harping that's it's different from the original. Of course it is. Who would want the exact same thing. Never saw the original show so I couldn't care less. This was an incredible, action packed, suspenseful ending. I never would have believed it would have been this spectacular or featured a giant Kaiju of sorts. As usual some warm scenes were interjected into the grim proceedings. The characters were likable and I was rooting for many. From the beginning I suspected that the prince and the Uncle were more good than bad and I sorta rooted for them also. The effects were spectacular and as par for the show. Anyone saying otherwise is an abject liar or needs glasses. It would be a dim disappointment if this wasn't renewed. Get ready for an extravagant affair.

Spectacular visuals
mickaeldelcey1 March 2024
I think many of us avatar fans were a bit apprehensive before this episode. How would this final showdown translate in a live-action. And I think even the most pessimistic viewers would agree, they did a heck of a job.

We should also remember that season 1 of the animated show did not have the best visuals, it improved in the following seasons and became amazing with Korra. So however great the animated episode was, seeing it finally getting the scale it deserves with this live action adaptation was really amazing.

The CGI was really top-notch but also the use of colours in the different moments, including the almost black-and-white feel was really well done.

The nitpick: the emotional beats were a little off. The timing of Iroh's threat, the sacrifice, etc... whether from the acting or scene direction, those big moments did not land as hard as they should have. And let's not speak about Momo... Just no!

So overall, a good episode, really epic in scale, which despite some weaknesses brings a satisfying conclusion to a flawed but promising first season adaptation.

Meh
ladyliliroche24 February 2024
Some parts are good, some parts are meh...

The fight between zuko and katara was done pretty good. Short but entertaining.

And my man Sokka kept being a woman magnet. Yes he is actually very good looking (will not forget that one episode of his fanservice) but his personality really shined the best. Kinda telling why so many women fell for him. He is my leading best boy. Kind hearted and funny, despite the story being too one dimensional.

Like... im not feeling much of these heavy weight and emotions. Too much telling and not enough showing. All just talk talk talk and what we supposed to fell or what the character is supposed to feel...

Again I understand it is for kids and overall, for me as someone who doesnt watch the show, it is watchable but could be done a lot better.

The costume is amazing though. For a live action with probably limited budget, the costumes design is really good. Doesnt look cheap (the only cheap looking one - the stand out - was in that 2nd episode with the warrior lady. Her leather armour looked thin and very fake).

A Binge-watchingworthy series One
alison-465-68476826 February 2024
Well, as the 'Terrible' poster observed - a lot of changes.

Some of the writing introduced a few twists and reimagined storylines. Overall, we enjoyed the whole series. True, it did almost tell the whole first series from a different perspective than the M. Night Shyamalan film (which was stellar) - but it was still pretty good. Looking forward to three more series!

The one disappointment was the ending of the final episode. We felt the 'Big Fish' sequence didn't work at all. The huge wall of water raised by Aang in the Shyamalan film was far superior. Everything else in that episode was really good though.

Despite the 'Big Fish', the SFX contribution to the film was superb, and the richness of the scenery and costumes really enriched the whole series. Well done to all concerned - bring of the rest of the element Benders!

Episode Ruined the World Building
scottrock797 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I've been onboard until this episode. So Katara gets to the northern tribe where women water bend to heal only. The tribe tell her that is their culture and it's been like this forever and they are all happy and content with their culture and lives. Katara, in her arrogance and self-righteousness, in not respecting another people's culture and customs, doesn't agree with the entire tribe's values and beliefs, so she attacks and fights one of their men. She then goes off screen and next minute, all the women of the tribe now want to fight for some reason. What did Katara say to change an entire tribe's beliefs and values and cultural practices? We don't know - it happened off camera. Then, for the marysue moment of the episode, all of a sudden the women are warriors and are water bending better than the men who have been training for half their lives. Remember, the only water bending the women ever did was to heal. How can they have learned in a minute, how to fight as good as their male counterparts who have been practicing for years?!

Also! Why has Ang not been practicing other bending?

Furthermore, Momo dies and I'm meant to care? The character's been in the show for all of five seconds. He dies and a woman picks him up and leaves with his body to save his life. Surrounded by her friends and family, who are dead and dying or still fighting, she picks up a dead animal she saw that one time, and leaves the battle to save its life and not those of her friends and family she has know her entire life and who she is meant to be leading!

None of this makes any sense and because of these points, this episode ruined a series that was going along quite well.

This is bad
andreicosmin-4806726 February 2024
I do not want the show to be like the original story, however when you change the actual characters and lose focus on where you are going with the story, you are taking another road.

So to sum up this last episode, without comparing to any other incarnation of this storyline: 1) Aang is made to be a killer. He wipes out the Fire nation's north fleet.

2) Aang is in no way focused or helped to learn any water bending. He is either Aang or the almighty Avatar.

3) Afirmative action where none was needed. Weird story of how women from the north water tribe not allowed to fight... ?!

OK visuals.

Keep up the good work...

Not that tragedy of movie but definitely not the original!!!
infjempathscorp24 February 2024
The show definitely needed more episodes or seasons to properly convey the content from the books. It would have been beneficial to break up each book into multiple parts, such as part 1 and part 2, to give the characters more time to develop and to avoid having to explain everything to the audience. It's also important to include pivotal moments that set up future storylines, like the cave scene with Aang and Katara, and to dedicate enough time to certain events, such as the team's visit to the northern water tribe. I also think it's strange that the main characters are separated so often, as it makes it difficult to see their development. Overall, the show would have benefited from more seasons to address the pacing issues. While some backstories are necessary, others, such as Azula's, could have been saved for later seasons. Lastly, the wigs are unnecessary and sometimes distracting, looks similar to cosplay. Now the show does have the essence of the original however missed the bar.

Terrible
mayyarsaied24 February 2024
Why change the story telling so much? The plot is so weak and very shallow, some things are accepted with any scenes like how zuko got in the city, why master Pako wasn't shown to be powerful in the attack? Why Aang and Katara didn't learn anything from him? Why Aang didn't learn waterbending in the first place? Where's the Avatar state music? So many wrong things.

I couldn't imagine a scenario where they could actually make it this bad, they failed miserably, the fighting scenes are questionable too, they're not so obvious.

Also what the have they done to Mai and Tai lee? Why Mai is so plump? Why Roku looks nothing like the original, why doesn't he have the charm and the deep soothing voice? Also why his role is so limited?

They butchered most things.

Why change so much?
laulinalua5 March 2024
The outfits are good, some scenarios and characters were nailed, but who loves avatar suffers watching all the unnecessary changes to some essential scenes.

To start with how they find Avatar. Katara is a strong woman who is wrongly put into a passive-boring-weak character.

Also, they highlight and create characters out of nowhere!!

It's almost if they took off the soul of Avatar and left the empty body there.

I'm sorry for the actors and the team involved, I really couldn't relate.

There's rhythm and poetry in the original that is completely lost here... and would be sooooo easy to keep it. They've done so much that could be awesome, but kill it!
