Three Men in a Boat
boblipton19 October 2010
Having read Jerome K. Jerome's minor classic, THREE MEN IN A BOAT a few months ago, I was amused by the earlier sections of this one-reel movie, which show men in small boats -- albeit none in the punting costumes one associates with that work. Still, the colors are nice, if a trifle erratically maintained in the prints that show up on the BFI website.

This movie is a well-estimated showpiece for Gasparcolor, one of several competing color systems for movies that tried for pieces of the market following the success of Technicolor. Developed by Bela Gaspar, it was, like Technicolor, a subtractive system and while it was used a bit in the mid-thirties for a few short subjects, it never really caught on.
