10. Altered Carbon (2018–2020) Fell Flat After S1
For all the cyberpunk connoisseurs, Altered Carbon was a breath of fresh air. A phenomenal setting, compelling characters, and engaging mystery — it had it all. The hype for Season 2 was real, but halfway through, the showrunner changed… Let’s just say that very few people even finished watching the new series.
9. Heroes (2006–2010) Was Gone for Good After S1
When Heroes Season 1 premiered in 2006, it became an instant nationwide cultural phenomenon. Everyone and their grandma were talking about it non-stop, and it felt like the new TV show was there to stay. Indeed, it stayed around for three more seasons, but those were so terrible the audience decided to ignore their existence.
8. Sleepy Hollow (2013–2017) Lost Its Essence After S1
Sleepy Hollow Season 1 got all the creepy fairy tale/legend fans excited. Unfortunately, after hyping the audience up, the show changed a showrunner and went into oblivion.

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

Constantin Film and Big Light Productions has tapped Christian Schwochow, whose credits include “The Crown,” “Munich: The Edge of War” and “Bad Banks,” to direct its upcoming high-profile drama series “Nuremberg,” based on the Nuremberg Trials. The show will be written by Frank Spotnitz, whose credits include “The Man in the High Castle,” “Ransom” and “Leonardo.”
The series follows young survivors of World War II who go to work for Allied prosecutors trying Nazi criminals in Nuremberg, only to find their quest for justice undermined by secret efforts to build a new world order based on power, not principle.
Schwochow said: “The Nuremberg Trials marked a pivotal moment in human history, ushering in a new age of responsibility and justice. This is a story of humanity grappling with its deepest shadows. Its relevance has never been greater, and I am filled with a humble sense of duty to tell this story faithfully.

They were supporters of the German American Bund, a pro-Nazi organization that was ready for an alternative to democracy. They waved Swastika flags and raised quite a ruckus. And they were hardly alone in their mission, as the new PBS American Experience documentary Nazi Town, USA makes abundantly clear.

It’s a high-risk, high-reward assignment, and the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural hometown, where he was once a golden all-American son – until his troubles began. Five years ago, Bode burned down everything in his life, leaving town with a big secret. Now he’s back, with the rap sheet of a criminal and the audacity to believe in a chance for redemption with Cal Fire.

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes well underway, it's surprising that casting news is trickling out for broadcast TV dramas.
Unfortunately, the news we're about to share will not come as good news for fans of FBI: Most Wanted.
Per Deadline, Alexa Davalos is no longer part of the CBS procedural's expansive cast.
Per the outlet, the actress was "informed by a producer on set that she won't be coming back after filming her last scene from Season 4 several months ago."
The decision means there will be no on-screen farewell for Kristin Gaines.
As a result, FBI: Most Wanted Season 5 Episode 1 will likely explain Kristin's departure.
Unfortunately, at the end of FBI: Most Wanted Season 4, there was no indication that Kristin was plotting her departure from the team.
It's sad for the fans who were invested in her arc because it means the resolution probably won't land as well as it should.

Series regular Alexa Davalos will not be returning for Season 5 of CBS’ “FBI: Most Wanted,” Variety has confirmed.

Davalos joined the series at the beginning of Season 3, playing the role of Kristin Gaines, a member of the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force and a former Naval Intelligence Officer. “FBI: Most Wanted” series regular Alexa Davalos will not return for the fifth season of the CBS drama series, TheWrap has confirmed.
Davalos, who played special agent Kristin Gaines in the drama from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, will exit the show in a surprising turn of events following the show’s Season 4 finale, which did not hint at possible exit for her character.

During Season 3, Davalos’ Gaines joined the team alongside Jess Lacroix, played by Julian McMahon. After McMahon exited the show during Season 3, Dylan McDermott took on the role of force leader Remy Scott.

Alternate history is one of science fiction’s biggest niches, at least on the bookshelves. There’s some big winners out there, like when historian and author Harry Turtledove took us on a trip through a Civil War where mercenaries funneled modern weapons to the Confederates in The Guns of the South. Meanwhile David Drake has a joyful obsession with introducing Roman centurions to aliens everywhere from Birds of Prey to Ranks of Bronze. It’s a ton of fun to splash through a world of what could have been.
Movies dip their toes into the genre to a far lesser extent, frequently sticking with takes on a post-wwii era where the Axis forces take control. There’s some fantastic movies in that niche, although they’re not often happy rides. But there are some great, zany takes on mixed-up history that a film fan can miss if they’re not looking.

The challenges, opportunities, and above all anxieties wrought by the ongoing AI revolution were on just about everyone’s mind at a business panel held at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival this week, and which kicked off with a tone-setting disclaimer.
“We do not have the answers,” said moderator Mathilde Fiquet, who is secretary general of the European Audiovisual Production Association (Cepi). “So I think we’re all going to leave with more questions than answers, but we really need to have these discussions.”
“I haven’t spoken to a writer or director who isn’t absolutely terrified right now,” added Frank Spotnitz, the one-time “The X-Files” writer and “The Man in the High Castle” showrunner. “But being against AI [right now] would have been like being against automobiles or airplanes or the internet. A version of this story about Rufus Sewell first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Apart from its geopolitical intrigue, “The Diplomat” is a series about a smart, driven pair of overachievers who can be a great team or can end up wrestling in the bushes while she swings tree branches at him. At the heart of the show is the relationship between Keri Russell’s Kate and Rufus Sewell’s Hal, a married couple of diplomats whose marriage may or may not be ending, but is both provocative and amusing with its nonstop mixture of flirting and fighting.
For Sewell, a 55-year-old British actor whose previous work has included “A Knight’s Tale,” “The Father” and “The Man in the High Castle,” the series supplied the kind of blend he’s been looking for through most of his career.

Without a market component, the Monte-Carlo Television Festival has nevertheless built out and bulked up its industry section with each passing edition. More than anything, the move came out of sheer practicality, says executive director Cécile Menoni.

To federate the juries, nominees and journalists, and to convey their overall vision of cotemporary industry concerns.”

The “erosion of the power of writers in the U.S.” can serve as a “learning opportunity” for European storytellers, according to The X Files EP Frank Spotnitz.
Spotnitz called for a “set of core values that we can strive and live up to” alongside “practical concrete strategies in countries where resources are in short supply” to improve the quality of TV writing in Europe – the continent in which he has lived for the past 13 years and runs his production outfit, Big Light Productions.
Speaking at Nem in Dubrovnik, Spotnitz criticized the “folly” of American producers for “eroding the power of writers” in the U.S.
“If U.S. studios succeed in suppressing the power of American writers they may well save money but they also may well reduce the quality and long term success of their own businesses,” he added. “The folly of American producers can serve as a...

The place you order replacement phone charger cables and bulk toilet paper from, making TV shows? Oh, how we laughed back in 2014! What kind of shows would Amazon make? The Loneliness of the Long Distance Delivery Driver? Warehouse Wars? Sorry We Missed You: a dating show where contestants can only speak through a letterbox?.
We were idiots in 2014. In almost a decade, Prime Video – as it’s now styled – has invested in some of the best drama around. It hasn’t stuck to one genre or poured everything into a single big-hitter, but has commissioned widely and mostly, very well. There have been bold sci-fi and alt-history that doesn’t pull its punches, from The Man in the High Castle to The Underground Railroad and The Power, as well as culture-redefining LGBTQ+ shows like Transparent, zany comedies like Mozart in the Jungle, action thrillers Reacher and Jack Ryan, and cool collaborations like Swarm.

Rick Cleveland is a successful and decorated longtime writer and producer who understands both sides of the WGA walkout that began Tuesday. He won an Emmy as a writer on “The West Wing” in 2000 and WGA Awards for “West Wing,” “Mad Men” and “House of Cards” in 2001, 2009 and 2014, respectively.
Cleveland took to Facebook yesterday to carefully explain, from his educated perspective, what’s behind and what’s at stake in the writers strike.
Seewga strikes for the first time in streaming era
“I worked on Netflix’s ‘House Of Cards’ in its first season as a writer and co-executive producer,” his Facebook post began. “This was after winning an Emmy for ‘The West Wing’ (shared with Aaron Sorkin) and working a series-long stint on ‘Six Feet Under’ and a two-year stint on ‘Nurse Jackie.’ The first offer from Netflix that came through my agent was for less money than I...

Ridley Scott knows epic.
The director of historical heavyweights like “Gladiator,” “1492: Conquest of Paradise,” “Kingdom of Heaven” and most recently the brilliant “The Last Duel” is back with a new sprawling historical epic in “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine.
Produced by Apple Films and originally intended to debut on Apple TV+, instead the streaming giant has partnered with Sony Pictures for a theatrical release this Thanksgiving. Tom Rothman promised that the film would receive a full-fledged theatrical release with a genuine theatrical window, including a full-throated theatrical marketing campaign, before arriving on Apple TV+. He also asked theaters to vigorously support the film as a theatrical success could lead to more cooperation between theaters and streamers.
