Ah, "The Notebook." Everyone knows about this now-classic romance film, helmed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It's the story of a boy and a girl from different sides of the tracks who fall in love with each other in the 1940s. Gosling's character, a poor hellraiser named Noah, woos McAdams' wealthy Allie first by dangling off a Ferris Wheel and then inviting her to lie down in the middle of an intersection. Sounds romantic. We've all been there, right?
Meanwhile, while this story is playing out in the past, we also cut back and forth to the present, where an old man named Duke (James Garner) is telling the love story of Noah and Allie to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. If you haven't seen the movie or read the Nicholas Sparks book that inspired it,...

A chimpanzee rests its chin on its hand, looking like the ape version of Rodin’s “The Thinker.” “There’s a picture of me somewhere sitting in that exact same position,” Owen Teague tells me before assuming a similar pose, swinging his long arm up and brushing his palm against the bottom of his face.
“There’s something very soft about the way that chimps move. Their hands are just super loose.”
He’s no zoologist, but Teague, the 25-year-old star of next month’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” knows a thing or two about animal behavior. After landing the lead role of Noa, a chimpanzee living in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have surrendered their apex predator status, Teague spent days at a Florida ape sanctuary. That’s where he got up close and personal with primates — well, except for the orangutans. “Man, they smell terrible,...

The second day of Dublin’s Storyhouse screenwriting festival kicked off with a bang on Friday as established writer-directors Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider), Mounia Akl (Costa Brava Lebanon) and Stacey Gregg (Ballywalter) all discussed at length the process of how they achieve their best work and how they balance the writer-director relationship.
“I think it’s not necessarily a process of digging deeper – sometimes it’s about digging sideways,” Abbasi told the Light House cinema audience. “I don’t necessarily think that working on something for ten years makes it better.”
Abbasi’s Holy Spider is a film noir based on the true story of the “Spider Killer” Saeed Hanaei who saw himself as on a mission from God as he killed 16 women who were sex workers between 2000 and 2001 in the Iranian holy city of Mashhad, and Abbasi said that when it came to making the Palme d’Or contender...

Nearly 60 years after the release of “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” Paul Simon still cringes at the song.
The 1966 Simon & Garfunkel classic features “a line that I hate,” the singer-songwriter told Stephen Colbert on Wednesday at the DGA New York Theater. “As it’s coming up, I’m thinking, ‘Here it comes, here it comes’ – ‘Life, I love you.’ Ugh! ‘All is groovy.’ Oh!” Simon recalled with evident disdain having to “sing it with Artie all the time because it was a hit. In my own shows, I don’t do it unless I make a mistake and I do it to punish myself.”
The crowd erupted with laughter at the singer-songwriter’s recollection and many others he delivered after a screening of the first part of Alex Gibney’s In Restless Dreams, a two-part documentary debuting Sunday on MGM+. Gibney was also onstage to discuss the project,...

Six years ago, in the spring of 2018, Teezo Touchdown and some friends drove nearly 250 miles across Texas from their hometown, Beaumont, to the state capital of Austin. SXSW was in full swing, bringing thousands of people each day to the downtown thoroughfare of Sixth Street, where Teezo and his friends set up. “We got ourselves a speaker and a microphone,” he recalled last night. “But we didn’t have no shows.” So, Teezo said, he spilled his soul right there on the street until the cops made him leave for performing without a permit.

The premise of "Air Force One" — President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) foils terrorists who hijack his plane, John McClane-style — requires national unity. The film calls for you to root for the president and only works if the majority of the audience (i.e. the U.S. population) sees their president as an unimpeachable good guy (pun intended). That is simply not the reality of America of 2024. "Air Force One" screenwriter Andrew Marlowe spoke to Syfy recently about why, to use the cliché, the film couldn't be made today.
"When we were doing it, the presidency and that position was not as politically charged as it is today. And so, I think that there are specific challenges about doing it in the contemporary climate that we would have to figure out."
Marlowe adds he'd only be interested in a follow-up if it reflected the world as is now: "Are we saying something new?...

Do you know the truth behind the identity of Agent Argylle? Matthew Vaughn's action rom-com for Apple starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell first debuted in theaters on February 2, 2024, but the film is already going to be available to watch at home just over a month later. Centered around a reclusive, cat-loving author named Elly Conway (Howard), the woman finds herself at the center of an espionage thriller right out of the novels she's written when a real-life spy named Aidan (Rockwell) realizes that her books reflect the actions of an actual spy organization. The film itself has been extremely polarizing, with the majority of critics disliking the picture, although /Film's own Ethan Anderton aligned with the majority of audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and liked it quite a bit!

Eric Roth wanted Robert Zemeckis to make a sequel to 1997’s Contact – but the conversation didn’t get very far.
In a very special episode of the Film Stories podcast, I’ve had the enormous pleasure of chatting at length to Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. You can find the episode right here…
Early on in the conversation, he talks about working with director Robert Zemeckis, the pair of whom both took home Oscars for Forrest Gump. They’ve reteamed on another movie that’s due later this year by the name of Here, but Eric Roth told me he’d originally approached Zemeckis with an idea for something else.
“I called Bob actually to see if he’d be interested in me writing Contact 2 for him, because I really liked that. I really like that whole arena”.

Marvel’s X-Men have long served as a powerful metaphor for marginalized people. They are mutants, excluded from society—it is an allegory for people of all ages, obvious enough for children to understand. Well, this discussion began with a recent trailer for Beau DeMayo’s highly anticipated animated series, X-Men ‘97, which will premiere on Disney+ next month.
The new series’ 1997 setting picks up where X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997) left off. In the trailer, we see cult favorites like Wolverine, Storm, and Cyclops kicking ‘90s butt and sporting stunning ‘90s outfits.
This time around, the shape-shifting hero Morph will be portrayed as nonbinary, according to an interesting update. This bold move, however, has stirred up controversy and exposed a segment of fans who seem to have misunderstood the very essence of mutants.

It might seem counterintuitive to suggest that an 83-minute film qualifies as a work of Slow Cinema, but to classify the beautifully meditative “Here” as anything else would be disingenuous. Unfolding like a series of loosely connected memories, Bas Devos’ fourth feature is a portrait of a fleeting connection between two lost souls that unfolds with the voyeurism of a nature documentary and the comforting precision of a crisp Asmr recording. With a plot so sparse that even a one-sentence summary threatens to spoil an hour of the movie, “Here” manages to present some of the most striking moving images in recent memory by leaning into the same minute details that its protagonist struggles to recognize in his own daily life. Devos’ soft directorial touch elevates what could have been a simple short film into a reflection on the small joys we choose to miss that packs a punch far greater than its runtime.

It’s a weekend of well-reviewed indie openings with Bleecker Street’s Out Of Darkness, The Monk And The Gun (from the directors of Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom) and limited openings for The Taste Of Things, Perfect Days (Best International Feature nominated), Anthony Chen’s Drift, Bas Devos’ Here and Ennio by Giuseppe Tornatore, which premiered in Venice in 2021 and is finally getting a U.S. release.
Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days, Japan’s official Oscar submission that nabbed a nom, opened at six locations in New York and LA Wednesday, adding additional cities next week. The film written by Wenders and Takuma Takasaki stars Hirayama, a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo who seems utterly content with his simple life until a series of unexpected encounters reveal more of his unearthed past. Emerging on the international cinema scene with a trio of tender yet emotionally exacting features in Violet, Hellhole, and Ghost Tropic, Belgian director Bas Devos has turned a new leaf with Here. The Berlinale prizewinner is a moviegoing experience as gorgeous as it is tranquil, following Stefan (Stefan Gota), a Romanian worker who begins forming connections with both nature and a bryologist named Shuxiu (Liyo Gong). The simplicity of the narrative is one of the film’s strong suits, Devos luxuriating in the gestures on display, from gifting soup to uncovering the ground beneath your feet.
I caught up with Devos at the U.S. premiere of Here at the 61st New York Film Festival, where we discussed the origins of the project, the film’s strong visual language, exuding a sense of compassion, the strange power of moss, and more. Ahead of the film’s theatrical run beginning this...

Here. Stay here. See what the news is going to be tomorrow. Graves grow no green that you can use. Remember, green’s your color. You are Spring. —Gwendolyn Brooks, “To the Young Who Want to Die”Cynicism has no place in Bas Devos’s Here (2023), a meshwork of small utopias in which the most urgent problem, on the surface of things, is the prospect of some vegetables going to waste. Set in Brussels, the nominal center of the European Union, this hopeful film takes shelter from present political crises and follows two placid characters, a first-generation Romanian migrant and a second-generation Chinese Belgian academic, whose narratives of minor events entwine in two chance encounters. They take cover from the rain with each other. They cross paths on wooded trails. If the deictic of the title—that lovely, laconic “here”—signals a stance of presence, then it is a stance...

Generative artificial intelligence is killing jobs in Hollywood, with little relief on the horizon.
A study surveying 300 leaders across the entertainment industry reports that three-fourths of respondents indicated that AI tools supported the elimination, reduction or consolidation of jobs at their companies. Over the next three years, it estimates that nearly 204,000 positions will be adversely affected.
At the forefront of the displacement: sound engineers, voice actors, concept artists and employees in entry-level positions, according to the study. Visual effects and other postproduction work stands particularly vulnerable.
The Concept Art Assn. and the Animation Guild commissioned the report, which was conducted from Nov. 17 to Dec. 22 by consulting firm Cvl Economics, amid concerns from members over the impact of AI on their work. Among the issues is that concept artists are increasingly being asked to “clean up” AI-generated works by studios, lowering their billed hours and the pool of available jobs, says Nicole Hendrix,...

Almost 20 years after its release, Robert Zemeckis’ animated Christmas film The Polar Express could be on the cusp of getting a sequel, as one of the film’s producers, Gary Goetzman, has revealed he’s trying to get a follow-up underway.

"I go places I've never been." The Cinema Guild has revealed an official US trailer for the indie Belgian film titled Here, the latest from acclaimed low-key filmmaker Bas Devos. This originally premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival last year, earning great reviews. I caught up with it at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, before it went on to screen at TIFF, AFI Fest, NYFF, and others. Set in Brussels, the film revolves around a potential love story between a Romanian construction worker and a Belgian-Chinese doctorate student of moss, who cross paths just before the former is about to move back home. It's a very peaceful, calm, humble film with some slow moments that let the story breathe. It allows the narrative to take its time, to let it build in its own slow-paced way, much like the moss that Shuxiu is studying. Here stars only two people: Stefan Gota...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Something you often hear cinephiles proclaim is that “Every year is a good year in film.” Well, that’s obviously true––if one pays attention and knows where to look––but then there are also years that are simply better. To me, 2023 has turned out to be one of those.
It’s a year where the top festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Venice all overperformed with stellar lineups. Geographically speaking, American/UK cinema can be proud of its output while productions from the rest of the world, especially France, Japan, Latin America, didn’t disappoint either. It’s also a year where not only indie/arthouse films delivered, but (some) blockbusters dared to get smart too. Even the presumed Oscar contenders this season include legitimate masterpieces in the mix.

Things are not working in favor of Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom at the North American box office. While we expected the Warner Bros film to bring Christmas cheer, that is far from the case. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard starrer is made on a hefty budget of $205 million, which has started to worry fans. But there’s good news for Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka. Scroll below to know how the latest releases are performing at the ticket windows.
There are ample options at the theatres currently. Apart from Aquaman 2 and Wonka, fans had been super pumped for Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s rom-com Anyone But You. Illumination & Universal Pictures’ Migration, Zac Efron’s The Iron Claw, The Color Purple, Ferarri, The Boys In The Boat are other competitors at the big screens.
