Like with many popular genres, the sci-fi thriller niche is oversaturated with movies, TV shows, books, and even video games. Everyone and their family dog need to create a dark and gripping mystery, and the best examples of such stories are widely known… For the most part. This unique movie wasn’t as fortunate despite its highly inventive and twisted approach to the genre and the story it tells.
Monolith Does the (Nearly) Impossible
Few horror movies manage to be truly terrifying without using the most expected tropes of the genre. 2008’s Pontypool was one such example, putting its viewers through the sheer terror of being stuck in the middle of a zombie apocalypse through nothing but a radio host’s narrative; 2022’s Monolith, boasting a bigger budget, achieved the same effect through different means.

Science fiction flicks are now rare guests of the platforms’ charts that are conquered by action and comedy movies. However, one film managed to enter HBO’s Top 10 and take the seventh place in it, even though it had been seemingly forgotten since 2022.
Its plot revolves around a disgraced young journalist, known only as the Interviewer, who starts hosting a podcast about the unsolved mysterious and true crime cases with the hope to revive her career. She invites the witnesses of various supernatural events to phone in with their stories, but nothing seems to really interest herself.
It all changes when one person tells about a strange black brick appearing in their house, and then others start to report the same happened in their lives all of a sudden. The Interviewer is quick to build a conspiracy theory regarding the backstory of these bricks, which immerses her more and more...

The more versatile an actor is, the more in demand they are. One of the major skills that an actor needs to grab more projects is the ability to change accents at will. This becomes even more essential when you are in the animation industry, where the way you speak can severely impact the quality of the entire production.

DC has been experimenting with electronic media ever since the earliest days of Superman radio shows. As technology developed, that translated into animations and live-action adaptations of comic book storylines. The DC Animated Universe (Dcau) is one of the most respected brands in the industry, with shows like Justice League Animated and films like All-Star Superman. DC’s recent entry Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths has been well-liked as well, and fans are really excited for one character in particular.

Despite failures with recent titles, the recent trend in live-service games does not look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Avengers failed miserably as a live title but then sprung Helldivers 2 out of nowhere to achieve the unexpected success that surprised every other studio.
On the flipside, though, the success of Helldivers 2 has now reopened the doors to more live projects, just when studios seemed to shy away from them. Despite past failed projects, WB Games is now recruiting for a role to assist Monolith Productions (MP).

After getting assigned a movie called Monolith, the first thing that came to mind was Stanley Kubrick’s iconic (still an understatement) 2001: A Space Odyssey, for obvious reasons. And the movie only validated me by kicking off with a pitch-black screen that stayed on much longer than usual. Instead of a strange, cryptic sound, we do get to hear a male voice describing a very strange incident to a podcast host, who’s our main (and only) character. You are bound to have many questions and theories brewing inside your head after Monolith. In this article, I am going to take a shot at simplifying things for you, and hopefully, I’ll succeed.
Spoilers Ahead

Matt Vesely’s debut references 2001: A Space Odyssey and Arrival, but ably stakes its own territory as a compelling and fastidious piece of work
It takes some guts for any sci-fi film – especially a no-budget one – to pick that title, and to include some eerie wisps of Ligeti-like sounds to get the cosmic hairs rising on the back of your neck. When Monolith isn’t referencing 2001: A Space Odyssey, it also bears some resemblance to Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, with its alien artefacts turning out to be filled with indecipherable glyphs when scanned. But Matt Vesely’s impressive debut ably stakes out its own territory, not least in the vast distances covered by a single on-screen actor and a handful of vocal performances.
After being fired for not doing due diligence on her journalism, the Interviewer (Lily Sullivan) is now slumming it for Beyond Believable, a paranormal podcast.

‘Monolith’ Review: Minimalist Horror Movie Starring Lily Sullivan Effectively Creeps Under Your Skin
The podcasting world was born out of mystery. Beginning with early hits like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, Serial, and Lore, the genre exploded with similar shows dedicated to shining a fresh light on the strange occurrences lurking just beneath our everyday line of sight. But can we always trust what we hear? No matter how diligent the research or objective the source, each story has been filtered through the biases and motivations of the human voice behind the mic. Investigating for the purpose of entertainment adds another element of deception. What pieces of the story have been embellished or omitted to ensure a satisfying arc? It’s no wonder faith in the media has sunk to a shocking low.
Director Matt Vesely plays with these concepts in his feature film debut Monolith, a minimalist sci-fi thriller that pulls back the curtain of journalistic creation. Based on a harrowing script by Lucy Campbell,...

If you are a comic book reader who has a long flight coming up, writer Jimmy Palmiotti has one humble suggestion. He is offering hundreds of pages’ worth of his comics at a steep discount as part of a sale that see proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund.
“It can get you from Japan and back from the east coast,” Palmiotti says with a laugh of the hefty reading material, available via the service Humble Bundle, which allows buyers to adjust how much of the proceeds to go charity and how much go to creators like Palmiotti.
Among them is Random Acts of Violence, which Jay Baruchel adapted as a feature in 2019. Another book in the batch was also in development as a movie: the crime drama Back to Brooklyn.

Lily Sullivan plays a disgraced journalist who comes across a strange artefact that might be of alien origin. Take a look at the Monolith trailer.
It’s been a bit of a rubbish start for horror films so far in 2024, with Night Swim falling short of expectations. Could Monolith, Matt Vesely’s high concept sci-fi horror, be the answer to our prayers?
Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan stars as a journalist and podcaster who uncovers a potential alien conspiracy. Say no more, you had us at ‘alien’. And also ‘conspiracy’.
Take a look at the Monolith trailer below.
Sullivan is the only actor on screen during the film’s 94 minute runtime. Others only lend their voices to the film, which also takes place in a single location. "It is spreading like a disease - any of us could be next!" Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi mystery indie film titled Monolith, made down in Australia by filmmaker Matt Vesely as his feature directorial debut following a few other shorts. This first premiered in 2022 at the Adelaide Film Festival in Australia, with screenings at SXSW, Overlook, Fantasy Filmfest, FrightFest, & Screamfest in 2023. The film stars Lily Sullivan as a journalist whose investigative podcast uncovers an artifact, an alien conspiracy, leading her to uncover the lies at the heart of her own story. Through the clever containment of a single location and only one on-screen character, Monolith surveils a disgraced journalist who turns to podcasting, before uncovering a strange artifact that she believes is evidence of an alien conspiracy. The small cast also includes voices of Ling Cooper Tang, Ansuya Nathan, Erik Thomson, and Terence Crawford.

Despite what Hollywood wants us to believe, not every movie ever made needs a sequel. This did not stop the studios from trying their hardest to churn them out, leaving movie fans with only one solution: forget the sequel exists. It’s a useful technique, but, ironically, it doesn’t work on the worst films. We can say to each other, for example, that Highlander II: The Quickening never happened all we want. In our broken, battered souls though, we know it exists. And it sucks so much. The memory endures, like a cinematic kidney stone.
Trying to forget works best on sequels so middling, or cynically shoveled out that there’s not much for our memories to grab on to. If we do remember them, it’s with a befuddled “how the hell did that happen?” or a “they got A-list actors for that?” kind of awe. And then we forget about them again.

The Wonder Woman game being developed by Monolith Productions might be a live-service title, in line with Warner Bros.’ stated goals.
A job advert for Monolith Productions seems to indicate that the studio’s upcoming Wonder Woman game might be a live-service title.
The advert, which was spotted by Wccftech, is for a ‘Lead Software Engineer, Gameplay’. “As a Gameplay Lead, you will lead the team responsible for core gameplay systems inherent to Monolith’s proprietary engine, including combat, movement, the Nemesis system, and more!” reads the job description.
(Nb. Monolith pioneered the Nemesis system in its 2014 game Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor, which sees some enemies return to dog the player again and again. Warner Bros. then patented the Nemesis system in 2015, as Ryan Lambie discusses in this exploration of the ups and downs of patented game mechanics. But I digress.)

The wait for F.E.A.R. fans to get their fix with Trepang Studios’ Trepang2 is over. The grisly supernatural Fps is finally out on Steam today, with the shooter blasting onto the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series later this year. And hey, the Steam demo is still very much available for you to take a test run.
Described as a spiritual successor to the fast-paced and over-the-top first-person shooters of the mid-2000s (namely Monolith’s gloriously spooky shooter), Trepang2 “pairs high-octane, first-person gun-fu gameplay with a devastating heavy metal soundtrack”. Stepping into the boots of a newly enhanced super soldier broken out from a government black site, you’ll embark on a supernatural journey of death, destruction, and corporate conspiracies.
Arm yourself with a hefty arsenal of weapons while mastering an array of newfound superhuman abilities including time distortion invisibility and superhuman speed, all the while hunted by...

U.K.-based sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales, excluding North America, for William Shatner documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” from Legion M and Exhibit A Pictures.
Written and directed by Alexandre O. The first and only feature-length documentary dedicated to Shatner’s life, career and philosophy, it delves into his most fervent passions, hopes and concerns, through a thematic distillation of his...

The suffocation of isolation is physical and metaphorical in Matt Vesely's "Monolith," a single-location thriller about the dubious nature of podcast journalism. At the core of Lucy Campbell's screenplay is a question about what anyone will believe in times of dire need and the ease with which theoretical events spread like infections. True crime shadiness is challenged once more as show hosts doctor facts to fit their storytelling methods, pointing towards the ickiness of profiting from another Dahmer or Bundy special. It's not exactly the most exciting inspection of human desires, but hinges on a nifty mechanic that sells an experience resting on a lone performer's shoulders from the comfort of her audio editing station.

There’s a good movie to be made about podcasts that traffic in unsolved mysteries where hosts rank cliffhangers and that hiccuping dramatic cadence over journalism. For half of its running time, the Australian thriller “Monolith” seems like it might be that movie. But the film, a debut feature from director Matt Vesely and screenwriter Lucy Campbell, falls sway to the clickbait tropes it intends to send up: red herrings, a tone of suffocating gloom and a desperation to keep the audience on the hook.
The sole actor on screen is Lily Sullivan, playing an unnamed Interviewer and audio ne’er do well who has recently fallen into disgrace over a j’accuse gone wrong. (Her inbox is bricked up with outraged emails.) Doxxed out of her home, she sets up a recording studio in her parents’ modernist mansion — the type with eerie floor-to-ceiling windows and so much nothingness outside...

A disgraced journalist tries to claw her way back into the game through a podcast on the metaphysical mysteries of the unexplained in first time feature director Matt Vesely’s Monolith. A single character, single location science fiction thriller, Monolith delivers in ways you won’t be expecting as a simple e-mail leads to a complex world of sinister phenomena. The Interviewer is desperately trying to find a subject for her inaugural episode and just when it seems nothing is working out she receives an anonymous e-mail reading simply, “Floramae King + the brick” and ending with a phone number. With time running out to keep her new gig and nothing else lined up, she takes a flier and quickly finds herself...

Movies, TV shows and, of course, barbecue. It’s all on the marquee at this year’s SXSW, the annual celebration of all things entertainment being showcased in Austin from March 10 to 19. From Hollywood blockbusters like “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” to iconoclastic fare like “I’m a Virgo” — the first foray into television for indie maverick Boots Riley — there’s a wild variety in this year’s lineup. Historically, the festival was better known for its musical offerings, but that’s changed in recent years as Hollywood has embraced the Texas gathering.
And while Sundance and Cannes may be higher profile, SXSW has established itself as an important stop for movies and shows looking to generate notoriety — “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” for instance, premiered at last year’s festival before racking up more than $100 million in ticket sales and dominating the Oscar nominations. Here’s a look at...
