Great return to form for NCIS
acfurst19 April 2022
This episode was easily the best post-Gibbs episode they've done. It was very centered on Nick Torres, and while they can't do that every week, it worked very well here. About all that was lacking was that it could have used more participation from the rest of the NCIS team (other than the psychiatrist, who played an important role in this episode), but there wasn't room for the extra characters in a 45 minute drama.

This was a departure from the usual NCIS formula, but they needed it. Hopefully there will be other episodes like this, perhaps focusing on one of the agents more than the others, if necessary. I have some concern that this might be the last season of NCIS, but if they have strong episodes like this one then they should be able to continue into season 20.

Last Dance

Warning: Spoilers
A generic villain, a pretty poor set up with the backstory, but hey, there was some shooting and some action so it was not all bad. Just not one we'll remember in a few weeks time.

Huge disappointment
cheddavis-8550319 April 2022
The concept and storyline of this had me excited for a good show; but, the writing and acting really let me down. A Torres centric story about Nick's past promised much, but delivered little. The writers didn't seem to know how to deliver a script with much punch, but the real letdown was Wilmer Valderrama's complete lack of interest and subsequent lack of emotion. I have tremendous respect for Valderrama's abilities, and think he's a great actor, but he just didn't show it here. Perhaps he has/had issues in real life that he's focused on, or perhaps it's a matter of everyone seeing the writing on the wall for this once great show. Either way, the monotone delivery of supposed highly emotional scenes simply did not deliver anything close to good theatre. Hard pass on this one.

Believability seems to be out the window
CrimeDrama119 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
From the moment Torres arrives at the rest stop and is recognized by a witness to the triple homicide, he and his entire team should have been on high alert, knowing Diaz (arms dealer Torres helped put in prison) is targeting him/them. They are far from being on high alert, however. McGee and Torres are driving to confront Renny, one of Diaz's henchmen, who once tried to kill Torres. Even though they are wearing bulletproof vests in the car, they are both distracted while discussing Torres' undercover experience, specifically betraying the arms dealer's beautiful cousin, who he had been dating. All of sudden, there is a car right next to theirs (on a two lane road!) and the passenger side window explodes as shots ring out. McGee and Torres were clueless. How can this be? No one is hit, not even in the vest?! It is not realistic! I am convinced CBS does not have believability overwatch in the writers room. They don't care. This scene and others could have been just as dramatic if McGee had spotted a car approaching on their right (on a two lane road!). I may finally quit watching this show.

Anyway, after Maria is nowhere to be found, Parker demands Torres go to a hotel safehouse but somehow Maria finds HIM there. She is the woman Torres was dating while undercover but he lied to her to get her to testify against Diaz, her cousin. The blank expression on Torres' face is bizarre. Who is to say that Maria doesn't want revenge of her own, plus, she has blood on her clothing. Absolutely no reaction from Torres, who stands there with the hotel room door wide open. Maria doesn't fully explain how she got to Torres' door so unless the U. S. Marshals only have access to one room at this hotel it doesn't make sense. Could the initial scene between Torres and Maria be any more awkward? It's no surprise that Maria wants nothing to do with her WITSEC life so does that allow for Torres to have a love interest? Maybe, but only after A LOT more counseling.

Selling out for more conflict and drama will kill a crime drama. There is plenty of potential when you have a bad guy hell-bent on revenge but believability has to be #1. Even though Mark Harmon is done as an actor on this show, he remains in the opening credits, voices the final message, and is an Executive Producer. However, maybe he has no creative control. The Supervising Producers may be the creative masterminds. Finally, I don't understand why Agent Knight essentially rode the bench for this episode. She has no problem being the first one through the door in dangerous situations. I still believe she came from the same mold as Gibbs more than any other agent ever. Yes, even Ziva, who never told Gibbs the real reason she joined NCIS in the first place. Gibbs figured it out. I have to prepare myself after Sasha Alexander's shocking exit after the first two seasons on this show. It is eerily similar to Mandy Patinkin's exit on "Criminal Minds" after the first two seasons. Don't get me started on Julian McMahon's mid-season departure on "FBI: Most Wanted." Just because all of my signs are pointing toward Katrina Law being the future of NCIS, it doesn't mean her character won't get killed off in the near future. If that happens, I will quit watching this show.

"Everyone Needs Therapy" drama
koohii5 May 2023
"Even Tough Guys Like Torres need a little love and therapy." This type of story makes me want to HORK!

Torres is half whiny, half jack-ass, and on the edge of alcoholism. The Badass undercover agent we were introduced to is long gone.

Um, how are all these riffles being stolen from the Naval Base? Can we have that story?

How was the baddie able to find out who Torres was and where his own cousin in WitSec are? Can we have those stories? Because I think that would be a lot more interesting. Don't just sweep it under the rug with "If you drop enough bodies, someone will talk," because someone has to actually KNOW the information you want.

This episode was stupid, boring, and utterly forgettable.

Can we please stage an intervention with the writers? Force them to start delivering quality? Maybe show them the first 5 seasons so they know what NCIS is SUPPOSED to be? Because clearly they haven't a clue, and just as clearly if they don't figure it out soon, they won't have an audience.

Disappointing indeed
harrykivi2 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to "Last Dance", because the premise sounded great. Sadly, I was let down. "Last Dance" is not a bad episode, but definitely the most disappointing episode of this season.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great. "Last Dance" is well-directed, the music fits the scenery. The acting's good too. Always have liked the regulars, did not have a problem with Wilmer Valderrama. Out of the guest stars Mariela Carriga, who has a good chemistry with Valderrama, gives an endeering perfomance.

. As previously mentioned, the premise of this story is interesting. Liked the examination of what Torres has gone through this season. The scenes with Mariela Carriga are well-done, the action is agreed thrilling.

But...

. I really agree with a previous reviewer that the villain (Diaz) is quite lacklustre. The characters keep saying how intimidating he is, but his threatening presence is never really shown on screen. Do agree too that the writing isn't very good. The dialogue feels melodramatic at times, quite of jokes fell flat and some aspects of the story needed a lot better explanation, for instance: how does a person, who is in a witness protection program, get assaulted in her guarded house?

Overall, an underwhelming experience.

5/10 HK.
