Real or fake?

I was surprised that I had never heard of the manuscript based on its apparent notoriety. But that made for a fun watch as the different theories on origin and purpose were discussed.

Could have been cool, instead it was misogynistic.

Warning: Spoilers
I love the manuscript and was super excited to watch this film- but the only thing lamer than referring to the manuscript's unknown author as "he" the entire time, was that not one single theory of its origin included a woman.

The only figures drawn the actual manuscript are women, many of them appearing pregnant. Clearly this was an alchemical midwifery text written by a woman in obscured language so she would not be prosecuted by the Church.

I would have also been interested in theories regarding channeled information, such as the work of painters like Hilma Af Klimt who painted shapes depicting universal and microscopic structures without having actually seen them.

All in all, it landed as hyper reductive ~~ aka men being the only people capable of having or documenting knowledge.

Institutions of historical preservation and storytellers need to do better. Do better.
