I liked the movie 'Tora's husband'. It's an Assamese movie written, directed, edited and produced by Assamese woman movie maker Rima Das. It is based on usual social scenario and hardships faced by small business-owners in Assam during covid pandemic time. The main character, Abhijit Das as 'Jaan' has been portrayed as a well-balanced responsible kind-hearted person with high morale. By bringing such a strong realistic character, by itself, Rima Das accomplished the social responsibility of being a film-maker: a role-model to be followed by an unorganized society, emphasized on keeping good behavior, refraining away from harsh words in any situation, being positive, honest and kind. Yet such a strong person can often be challenged by insecurities faced in personal and financial situations of running a business, especially in the hardship brought by covid pandemic. His wife, Tora has been shown as a simple and dedicated wife yet going through mental turmoil that is quite common for a simple traditional wife. My favorite dialogue in the movie is one by Jaan-"there is no one world, each of us has different own worlds". Realizing that his wife, Tora, who has all the good intentions for him, too may have a different perspective at looking at the things, is a strong self-reflection that made him to change himself to avoid conflict. Despite having all the excellent qualities of a good human being, Jaan is shown to be a heavy alcoholic accentuated covid pandemic stress and that created great discontent to his wife. In general, it is a positive movie ending with the message-Men are probably more vulnerable to stress and depression due to the demands in carrying out financial responsibilities, gender roles, social expectations etc, and most importantly, in keeping both mom and wife happy. Acknowledging love and affection for wife openly may not be habitual for a typical Indian husband, but doing so easily solves the problem to bring back happiness in family with a pleased wife😊 Rima Das craftily brought in that important message at the end! A big applauded to the talented Assamese woman film producer again and good wishes to her to accomplish even bigger in the future.
