After the kid-friendly movie The Pacifier, it seemed like Vin Diesel would never been seen again in the action movie world. The success of Fast & Furious and the even bigger success of Fast Five ensured he still has a career in the genre, but Diesel is returning to the family-friendly territory in a film that sounds like a live action version of The Iron Giant (in which he provided the voice for the title character). Deadline reports "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Miller are in negotiations to write The Machine, a story about a machine built to be a weapon who's decommissioned and befriended by a boy 20 years later. The original screenplay was written by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the minds behind Night at the Museum and Action No. 1, the awesome-sounding story of comic book theft based on actor Nicolas Cage's real life. Last year, we wrote about how Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel was planning to take a road trip back into the realm of action comedy with a movie called The Machine. Diesel will star as the titular secret government weapon who is discovered and befriended by a little boy 20 years after the project has been shut down, and now Variety reports the project has found a director. Get Smart helmer Peter Segal will take the reins, which seems like a good fit for the family-friendly tone they're aiming for here. Sounds like Brad Bird's The Iron Giant to me, in which Diesel voiced an indestructible robot also befriended by a young boy. The screenplay was written by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the minds behind Night at the Museum and Action No. 1, the awesome-sounding story of comic book theft based on Nicolas Cage's real life.

Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon are busy these days. A couple of weeks ago, the “Reno: 911!” alums wrote a heist movie called Action No. 1 based on the theft of Nicolas Cage’s prized comic book, and now the duo has set their co-directorial debut. Hell Baby will star Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb [...]

As we look ahead to the arrival of new and exciting film projects this week, we also take a look back at some of the interesting and/or noteworthy projects in-the-works that were recently added to IMDbPro's growing database of in-development titles. Here are a few that grabbed our attention lately:
Swindle – Once upon a time we thought films like Jennifer's Body featuring Megan Fox and Colombiana starring Zoe Saldana's would be sure fire hits at the box office based on their stars' previous blockbuster success (not to mention their pin-up poster appeal). But, we were wrong. Now, the two actresses are joining forces to beat the box office odds by co-starring in this action-heist flick from writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson. Michael De Luca produces.
Action No. 1 – Reno 911! alumni-turned-Night of the Museum scribes Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon found real-life inspiration for their next comedy from actor Nic Cage. The theft of the Oscar-winner's prized comic book collection, including a copy of Superman's first appearance, by a crew of bumbling nerds is the basis for this film from Lionsgate. No word on who will portray Cage.
Untitled Barbara Jordan Biopic – The Help's Viola Davis is on a roll. Following up her recent Oscar nom with performances in the upcoming Ender's Game and Warner Bros.' Beautiful Creatures, the actress has formed her own company, JuVee Productions, along with her husband, Julius Tennon, to produce this feature film based on the life story of civil rights leader, Barbara Jordan, who became the first African American woman ever elected to the Texas senate.
The 5th Wave – Tobey Maguire's Material Pictures and Graham King's GK Films will team up to produce this sci-fi tale from writer Rick Yancey. The film centers on a girl looking for her lost brother after an alien invasion.
Zombie Broadway – Formerly one-half of the '80s New Wave act Eurythmics, musician Dave Stewart is now branching out into movies with this genre-crossing musical directed by Jonas Åkerlund. The pic follows a group of Broadway entertainers trying to stop a zombie invasion in New York City. Stewart's producing via his company, Weapons of Mass Entertainment.
