Best episode yet

Warning: Spoilers
While the premise of Arrow seems painfully predictable, the creators have found a formula to make it ever more interesting with each new episode! This alone is worth complimenting - although I'm starting to suspect this season has more tricks up its sleeves ...

Comparisons to Batman Begins as an origins base are right on the money, but I don't hold it against Arrow one bit. Hey, if you offer escapism at its best in return, and if you're gonna steal, steal from the best, right:) This particular episode, however, transcends its Batman origins for the first time and actually, especially with the ending itself, displays qualities of The Dark Knight. Boldness finally paid off, I hope they keep it up!

Like the 1st season of Spartacus a couple of years ago (and the now legendary 1st season of Prison Break before that), this show has successfully unloaded the burden of becoming a predictable stereotype of utterly uninspired, lazy writing. Arrow is more entertaining than I thought it deserved to be, and that's what'll keep me returning till the end of season 1.

If there's no purgatory afterwards, who can tell?

The Mission Comes First
SpideyVerse2315 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After the cliffhanger of the previous episode, this one picks up with Oliver being taken to the police station in handcuffs, followed by him asking for Laurel as his lawyer. What happens from here is surprising and adds a new depth to all the characters which I didn't really expect. We get to see just how smart Oliver is, Diggle making it clear what kind of partner he is going to be, Laurel realizing her feelings for Oliver and Quentin starting to deal with Oliver's return. The flashbacks also became really dark by showing Oliver being tortured.

Overall, the fifth episode of Arrow is a win for the first season of the show.

Arrow Season 1 Episode 5

Review : This episode is the fifth episode of this season. Speaking of this backstage I would like to say that this episode is a story centered episode. Less than part of the action in this episode. To be caught by oneself, to make people believe the truth, by making it a lie. All these things have been seen in this episode. Now it remains to be seen what happens in the next episode.

Acting : Very Good

Directing : Good

Story : Very Good

Screenplay : Good

Dialogue : Very Good

Background Score : Good Enough

Soundtrack : Good

Cinematography : Good Enough

Editing : Good

Set : Very Good

Location : Good

Sound Recording : Good

Lighting : Good Enough

Vfx : Very Good

Overall Ratings : Eight out of ten.

When I review episodes, that review is based entirely on my own personal ideas. Seeing the episodes of any season of any series, I think I write it in the review. I know, maybe in my reviews I often write something bad, like the writers didn't write the story well or the director didn't do well or the actors-actresses over-acted. But I don't use foul language or profanity in my reviews. If I unknowingly hurt someone in my review or if someone feels bad after reading my review, then I sincerely apologize to him.

I thank you for reading my review so patiently.

An excellent episode that doesn't seem to have any damage
Damaged is without a doubt the finest episode and a classic fifth episode in the first season so far. Not only does it enhance the character depth to a bigger level and in the writing department, but it had a solid character introduction one character known as Malcolm Merlyn, Tommy's father (played by John Barrowman), who has a mystery to him that might be revealed later on in this season. Seriously, that guy did a superb job. The other aspects that made the first four episodes interesting are still retained. The combination of action mystery and drama is still blended nicely, the pacing doesn't drag too long, the characters are still interesting and relatable as Oliver Queen continues to shine with his relationships with John Diggle and his family along with Tommy and Laurel (who people may find to be annoying at times, but there might be some potential to her than most people think), the music score is still solid, the directing and editing are still top notch and the flashback story arc for Oliver continue to be well-written. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think the first season really got me hooked it got me wanting to see what would happen next on Oliver's gritty adventure. By all means, this receives a thumbs up. :)

YOU HAVE SAVED THIS CITY!
THEARROWFLASH13 July 2020
As always the only word that can be used to describe this episode wholly is: PERFECTION!

The plot, the acting (they deserve an insane amount of emmy's but have been robbed of all of them), the writing, the writing, the writing & oh DID I MENTION THE WRITING!?!??! HONESTLY DAMN! This could've been something so bland, unoriginal & like something we have seen a million times before but the writers were like "NOPE, WE'RE NOT FAILING THIS CITY!" & sure enough this episode is perfect writing-wise. Honestly I don't know how they do it EVERY.SINGLE.TIME but damn! Season 1 IS PERFECT! & ARROW SEASON 1 EPISODE 5 IS PERFECT! And we even see the PROTO-DEATHSTROKE OUTFIT! And the enemy OH MY GOD THE ENEMY IN THE FLASHBACK WAS SOOO BRILLIANTLY PORTRAYED! Words can't explain how perfect it was so watch it instead! And if, for some reason, that isn't enough to convince you to watch it hear this:

This is the FIRST TIME, Oliver said "YOU HAVE FAILED THIS CITY!" & Killed someone! Yes, it is iconic. It is beautiful. And it is PERFECT!

Warning: Spoilers
Following the events of the previous episode, Quentin arrests Oliver and outs him as the vigilante, but its quickly revealed to be part of a plan orchestrated by Oliver himself. He convinces Laurel to be his lawyer, which leads to some great scenes between Oliver, Quentin and Laurel. We also get a taste of Dig and Oliver working together, but its not exactly smooth sailing since Oliver does not inform Dig of his plan to exonerate himself till the last moment.

The scenes between Moira and Malcolm are intriguing and filled with mystery, I am interested to see where that storyline will lead. Connected to that is Walter's investigation which continues after he finds the remains of the Queen's Gambit, though it takes an unexpected turn.

The flashbacks show Oliver getting captured by a group of mercenaries on the island and being tortured by them for the whereabouts of Yao Fei.

Overall, this was a great episode to what has been a good, borderline great first season of the show so far.
