Lionsgate International UK has made its first investment in a British TV show - jumping on board Damned, Channel 4’s social services sitcom.
The British arm of the Us-based producer and distributor is to co-produce and co-finance the series, written by and starring Jo Brand [pictured] through her indie What Larks Productions, and will sell the rights worldwide.
The deal marks Mad Men producer Lionsgate’s first investment in a UK-commissioned show and follows its move to acquire a 25% stake in Kindle Entertainment in December. The kids producer is responsible for shows including Cbbc’s Hank Zipzer.
Last month, Channel 4 ordered a 6 x 30-minute run of Damned, which began as a one-off as part of Sky Arts’ Playhouse Presents strand in 2014.

Johnny Vegas has called for more "brilliant, self-contained pieces" on television - and less of a focus on "returning audiences".
Vegas stars in one-off comedy Brilliantman! - airing tonight at 9pm on Sky Arts.
"I mourn the bygone days of Play for Today and these self-contained pieces, and the fact that within TV now it's all about returning audiences," the comic told DS.
"It's a real dumbing down or a presumption of the audience. It's almost a broadcast-induced attention deficit syndrome - where they don't trust that people can watch something that is self-contained for 30 minutes.
"And it's a shame that everything is about competing with something in the same time-slot on another channel, rather than putting something on for its creative and artistic validity."
Vegas previously worked with Sky Arts on the Playhouse Presents episode 'Ragged' - based on the early life of actor Ricky Tomlinson.

Can you believe it's been seven years since Colin Morgan's boy wizard first strode onto our screens?
The series premiere of Merlin on September 20, 2008 set us off on a magical five-year journey - one with mythical monsters, wicked warlocks and excessive amounts of bromantic banter.
Millions tuned in each Saturday night for the show's blend of fun, fantasy and friendship - because Merlin and Arthur (Bradley James) were definitely just friends, Ok? - but what's happened to Camelot's finest since that epic final episode?
Colin Morgan
The aged Emrys might still be waiting for King Arthur to revive, but Merlin lead Colin Morgan hasn't lain dormant these past few years. He appeared opposite fellow Irish legend Gabriel Byrne in BBC One's moody detective drama Quirke in 2014, was seduced by Gillian Anderson as mercurial copper Tom Anderson in The Fall and played cyborg Leo in Channel 4's smash hit Humans.

Cast your minds back to 2002 - a time when Pop Idols didn't need to have The X Factor, Fifty Shades of Grey were just colours on a paint sampler chart and David Beckham was a mere international superstar rather than global megastar.
Bend It Like Beckham, with a modest estimated budget of £3.7 million, opened that same year and became a critical and commercial success - breaking box office records and scoring BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, as well as making household names of many of its stars.

Cara Delevingne is to star in a film produced by Elizabeth Jagger.
The actress and model will appear in the feature, which is currently called Prime Mover.
Jagger explained to Love magazine that it is set in the Occupy Wall Street movement, but did not specify a release date.
On Delevingne, Jagger said: "She's an amazing actress, and she's so perfect for this part it's a joke.
"It's like it was written for her, but it wasn't. Scheduling her is really stressful scheduling though!"
It will be the first time that Jagger has produced a film, while Delevingne has taken on several acting roles in the past few years.
She appeared in an episode of Sky Arts' series Playhouse Presents, and The Face of an Angel alongside Kate Beckinsale.

Richard Wilson has told Digital Spy that the BBC have talked to him about starring in a sitcom.

Could it be that Jack Bauer has clocked out for the very last time?

The first look at Stephen Fry and Kiefer Sutherland in Sky Arts' Marked has been revealed.
The comedy-drama, which forms part of Sky's Playhouse Presents series, sees Sutherland play a debt-ridden character who agrees to perform an assassination for his neighbour.
However, he doesn't expect to run into Fry's Father Christmas in the target's house.
Fry said: "It's so unfair to call Kiefer Jack Bauer because his career has been incredibly rich outside Jack Bauer.
"But to see Kiefer playing such an incompetent character is just blissful. Someone who doesn't know how to load a gun, someone who doesn't know how to climb a gate or do anything... just makes me weep with joy."
Marked airs on Thursday, December 18 at 10pm on Sky Arts 1.

Proving that it's for more than just catching up on that episode of Orphan Black you missed because your mum phoned wanting to know if she should put a sticker over her laptop's webcam “in case hackers might see me putting in my credit card details”, BBC iPlayer has this week launched a series of 6 online-exclusive original comedy shorts, under the vaguely Soviet-sounding banner title, Original Comedy Shorts.
It's another toe-dip into content created exclusively for the BBC's electronic attic: Auntie Beeb has stuck an Elastoplast over her webcam, typed 'give me comedy' into her computer, and this is the result.
And, like a cheap pillow, it's comforting but also vaguely disappointing. Partly because it's all established comedians piloting the fun rather than up-and-coming talent. Yes, it's a...

Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

Other write-ups on this that I've read are calling it his directorial debut; but it's really not. He's directed at least one music video already, plus an episode of the British TV series Playhouse Presents, titled The Pavement Psychologist, which starred his fellow British actor Nonso Anozie. Below you'll find a new 6-minute short Idris Elba directed for Pepsi's 'Beats of the Beautiful Game' project - a collection of 11 songs that will be accompanied by short films - titled Unstoppable. What have Matthew Holness, Richard Ayoade, Alice Lowe and Matt Berry been up to in the decade since Garth Marenghi's Darkplace?
It’s been ten years now since author, visionary, and dreamweaver Garth Marenghi’s legendary horror TV show, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, was rescued from a vault in Peru and broadcast to a largely unappreciative audience.
Or, you know, in the reality we actually inhabit, it’s been ten years since a group of comedians donned 80s costumes and pretended to be aging filmmakers commenting on their own ‘lost’ series. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace was a perfect send-up of both trashy low-budget horror and science fiction productions and pompous creators, as a bewigged Matthew Holness straight-facedly explained the unique genius of his horror writing alter ego even as his greatest creation, Dr Rick Dagless M.D., mugged away in the background.

Want to make sure you don't miss anything great on the telly in the next seven days? Never fear, because Tube Talk has done all the hard work for you and smushed all of this week's must-see TV into one snappy rundown. Check out what you should be checking out below...
Backchat with Jack Whitehall and His Dad: Wednesday (November 20) at 10pm on BBC Three
It seems we can't get away from Jack Whitehall nowadays. If it's not Bad Education that's lighting up the box, it's Fresh Meat or A League of Their Own. Now he's called for reinforcements in the shape of his father as he continues his bid to take over the world.
Backchat plays on the awkwardness that arises when Jack unleashes his anarchic posh boy routine around his dry and disapproving dad Michael, while the celebrity guests (Jeremy Paxman and Danny Dyer this week!) presumably look on in bemusement.

Signing Wheatley to helm Who is an enormous boon for the BBC's long-running sci-fi drama - he's a rising star and a unique talent. But which other big names would be a good fit for the show's director's chair?

Hart joins fellow Brits Iain de Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge in the cast. Coincidentally (or not? It's anyone's guess at this point), they play the scientific support team for Shield agents Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen).
Hart most recently appeared on the DirecTV series "Rogue." His other U.S. TV credits include "Luck," "Dirt" and "Bates Motel." He has also played John Lennon on three separate occasions -- in the feature films "The Hours and Times" and "Backbeat" and in an episode...

Doctor Who
The first trailer for the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special aired during this year's San Diego Comic Con and sadly has yet to go online - unlike practically every other TV panel 'sneak peek' clip which screened at Comic Con this year.
For those of us who couldn't make it, The BBC has released three Dalek-related photos from the clip in an attempt to quell UK and overseas fandom which seems to be growing more irate by the hour.
The clip itself is said to have shown a lot of scenes of Smith and Tennant's Doctors running about, and (finally) a look at the events of the Time War. Moffat added that he's currently on page 20 of writing this year's Christmas special that will see the character's regeneration.

Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe partnered up last year for A Young Doctor’s Notebook, which became the most successful programme in Sky Arts history.
It’s understandable, then, that the channel would want to bring the duo back for a second season, and now news arrives that Hamm and Radcliffe have officially signed on for a second series.
The original four-part mini-series was based on a collection of short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov, airing in December last year as part of Sky Arts’ Playhouse Presents series.
There’s no word yet on the exact length of the second series, but it wouldn’t be amiss to suspect that it will be at least another four episodes long, given the success of the first season.
The comedy-drama’s second series will return to the small village of Muryevo in 1918 to find the Young Doctor battling against an all-consuming morphine addiction.
