A few weeks ago, it looked like S Craig Zahler would be making the noir thriller The Big Stone Grid as his first movie since Dragged Across Concrete back in 2018. Now, it turns out that Zahler will indeed be making a new film, but it will be an all-new project that re-teams him with his frequent star Vince Vaughn. The movie The Bookie and the Bruiser is a period crime flick that teams Vaughn with Adrien Brody, and the film is set to be shot later this year.
According to the release from Anton, the company financing the film, “The Bookie & the Bruiser is set in 1959 New York City and features a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas in World War II and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind.

Bone Tomahawk and Dragged Across Concrete writer-director S Craig Zahler has a new film in the works. The Bookie & The Bruiser will star Vince Vaughn and Adrien Brody.
Ever since he made his eye-catching debut with 2015’s horror western Bone Tomahawk, S Craig Zahler has established himself as a specialist of tense, gritty films about tough men backed into even tougher situations.
Zahler’s latest project, The Bookie & The Bruiser, sounds similarly uncompromising. A period piece set in late 50s New York, it’s about two World War II veterans, one Jewish, one Italian, who team up to create an “illicit gambling operation”. Their new enterprise soon gets them in trouble with Irish gangsters and the Mafia.
According to Variety, Zahler has signed up his regular collaborator Vince Vaughn, who starred in Brawl In Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete (pictured above), to appear in this latest project. Given his stature,...

Global Screen, the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam. The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.
“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.
Despite Atshumao’s warning, the group attempts a shortcut through the unforgiving landscape, unaware that this will lead them to cross paths with two ancestral spirits – who will settle a centuries-old dispute by betting on the family’s lives. The group of travelers is soon plagued by misfortune, tragedy, thirst,...

Is there any actor who casually oozes coolness like Kurt Russell?
As with anyone in Hollywood, the young Russell had to earn his stripes. Upon signing a contract with the Mouse House, he started out anchoring a collection of zany Disney comedies in the '60s and '70s, including "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes," "The Strongest Man in the World," and "The Barefoot Executive," a movie that paired him opposite a chimpanzee. Beginning with their 1979 made-for-tv "Elvis" biopic, however, Russell and director John Carpenter collaborated on a series of highly efficient yet firmly modest genre films, many of which became cult hits and cemented their too-cool-for-school reputation.
Russell has only continued to evolve his legacy in the 21st century, starring in everything from cult favorites as worlds apart as "Sky High" and "Bone Tomahawk" to Quentin Tarantino joints and blockbuster franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Fast...

Writer/director S. Craig Zahler made quite the splash with his gnarly genre films “Bone Tomahawk,” “Brawl In Cellblock 99,” cementing himself as an auteur with a very particular point of view. It’s been almost six years since 2018’s cops and robbers thriller “Dragged Across Concrete,” and if you’re curious about what Zahler is up to next, well, he’s delivered an overdue update in trying to clear up some misinformation.

After directing three films in four years with Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete, it’s now been six long years since the latest new feature from S. Craig Zahler. While he’s chimed in on his recent avorite films and beyond, it’s been fairly silent regarding his next potential project. We now finally have an update on what’s on his plate.
“A number of articles have announced The Big Stone Grid as my next picture, which is not quite correct,” Zahler noted on his blog. “I am sending that script around as a possible fifth movie, but I’ve made far more progress with another different original project to direct for my fourth one: I am negotiating deals to see if it will become a reality. I will give more information about this when things are more certain. Continue to look here for my next movie announcement.

The Western is one of the many genres that have endured in the vast canon of American film. And with Horizon: An American Saga set for release soon, all eyes will be on Kevin Costner to prove that the Western is still as appealing as it ever was.
It would not be incorrect, of course, to suggest that Costner’s forthcoming passion project is pushing the boundaries of his line of work. The Western epic is a big risk for the California-born actor, given how much of his own money went into financing the flick, which will be released in two parts.
Starring Sam Worthington, Costner, and Sienna Miller, among others, the film is set during the American Civil War.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga
Even though the backdrop and main idea of Horizon: An American Saga is fairly well-known, Costner might still score a career-high with this film.

Way back in 2011, Sony Pictures acquired a spec script titled The Big Stone Grid, which was written by S. Craig Zahler – who is best known these days for writing and directing the films Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete. As of early 2012, Michael Mann was in talks to work on script revisions with Zahler and to direct the film. The Mann take on the material didn’t come to fruition, and four years later the project moved over to Lotus Entertainment, with Pierre Morel on board to direct. Morel couldn’t get it into production, either. Eight more years down the line, World of Reel reports that Zahler is now set to direct the film himself.
Part of the reason why Zahler has gone six years without directing a new film is the fact that the project he was pursuing, Hug Chickenpenny (an adaptation of...

Sunday wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day, it was also Kurt Russell’s birthday — and the Halloweenies think that’s worth celebrating. After all, for over 45 years, Russell has kept us rooting for him in a smorgasbord of iconic roles: Rj MacReady, Snake Plissken, Jack Burton, Elvis Presley, Wyatt Earp, Santa Claus, Stuntman Mike, Curtis McCabe, Mr. Nobody, Jeff Taylor, Rudy Russo, Eldon Perry, and, of course, Captain Ron.

So, to celebrate the big guy’s birthday this past Sunday, the gang unlocked said episode on S. March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that the day Kurt Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for Disney, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what are Kurt Russell’s best movies? To celebrate his 73rd birthday, let’s dig into them here.

The Beekeeper (David Ayer)
It’s the time of year for smooth-brained relaxation. Moviegoers can recover from the holidays with the comfort of knowing Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson, or Jason Statham will be here to satisfy their mid-budget, action-programmer needs. Is it really the new year if one of those cherished Kings of January doesn’t appear on the release slate? There’s no Gerry or Liam, but the ever-reliable Statham dons a trucker hat and blue jeans to grit his way through David Ayer’s The Beekeeper, an overall valiant, occasionally fun attempt to take us out of Q1 doldrums. – Conor O. Although his name might not be muttered in the mouths of mainstream moviegoers, S. Craig Zahler has crafted an impressive career in cinema over the last decade. After selling multiple screenplays and self-releasing a handful of novels, Zahler self-funded his first movie, Bone Tomahawk in 2015. The bone-crunching Western horror blended brutal violence, extreme gore and slick dialogue, serving up a unique formula that resonated with the indie market. Two years later, Zahler released his second film, Brawl in Cell Block 99, an unflinching prison movie that took his notorious gratuitous violence to a whole new level. In 2018, Zahler’s...

It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. But that’s the Halloween season for you, when the ghosts and goblins and AMC-obsessed Nicole Kidmans are out in full force for their yearly Halloween rituals.
Aside from meticulously inserting razor blades into the apples we all intend to hand out to local children, everyone’s favorite part of the Halloween season is—of course—the excuse to binge-watch our favorite horror movies, from the silly-scary (Hocus Pocus), to the fun-scary (Trick R Treat), to the scary-scary (The Evil Dead) or the really scary-scary (any news channel). Ever since "Star Trek" debuted its new live-action shows on Paramount+ it's been a little bit confusing. "Star Trek: Discovery" and its spin-off "Strange New Worlds" take place prior to some of the previously established events in "Star Trek" canon (quite a few of them too), and feature characters we already intimately know from their future stories ... which came out in our past. Look, I said it's confusing.
Throw in some jarring continuity shifts about what Klingons look like, characters with more siblings than we ever knew about, and a general visual aesthetic that has more in common with the alternate "Kelvinverse" movies than the more canonical TV shows, and you'd be forgiven for thinking all bets were off. The latest "Star Trek" shows have been throwing continuity out the window.
But you'd be wrong. Well, somewhat.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

The Western genre ebbs and flows between family-friendly storytelling and adult grittiness, but who says that it can’t bend to meet horror? Bone Tomahawk demonstrated in 2015 how Western and horror is a winning combination that deserves further exploration.

Bone Tomahawk takes place in the American West during the 1890s when an outlaw accidentally leads a band of cannibalistic Troglodytes into a tranquil Western town called Bright Hope. There, they kidnap a group of settlers, including a rancher’s wife. Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) sets out on a treacherous journey along with an unlikely group of characters on a rescue mission.

Kurt Russell is the preeminent example of gruff, masculine swagger, injecting his performances with a vigorous presence no matter the role. Considering all of his muscly, mustachioed charms, it's a wonder that he hasn't been in more Westerns. That could be simply because films about the frontier aren't quite as common now as they used to be, but the actor takes his choice of roles in the genre seriously. Both "Tombstone" and 2015's "Bone Tomahawk" appealed to Russell, not because of their brutal action, but because of their dialogue, both refreshing to him in their own unique ways.
To be fair, Westerns have inspired Russell's roles, even if the films themselves weren't strictly in the Western genre. There's no mistaking that Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York" is at least partly an impression of Clint Eastwood's The Man with No Name, and Russell's role as Jack Burton in...

A few weeks ago, the Criterion Collection announced that their specialty December programming would include a block dedicated to winter westerns. Gathering together films like "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" and "Ravenous," the collection casts a wide net, drawing on the history of the American West to combine the classic with the mondo and beyond. This collection also served as the perfect framing device for my first campaign of "Frontier Scum," a 2022 tabletop roleplaying game from writer Karl Druid set in a twisted, funhouse version of the American West.
Falling under the Old School Renaissance or Old School Revival subgenre of games, "Frontier Scum" is a rules-lite game that is inspired by the dark fantasy RPG "Mörk Borg" and draws its inspiration from, quote, "gun and hat times." The game is a love letter to every incarnation of the Hollywood Western, albeit one that has little patience for some of the genre's more unsavory tropes.

What right does the BBC have, making a lavish six-part western? The BBC – which is all about stuffy, bonneted period dramas and documentaries where a nonagenarian cavorts with chimpanzees – tackling the quintessence of American culture? And, to add to the impertinence, calling it The English? Well, that’s the situation we arrive at with Hugo Blick’s BBC Two drama (co-produced with Amazon), which arrives on our screen with a thunder of hooves.

His role as petro-chemist Andy Yeats, who is fighting to save the world from an apocalyptic oil crisis, comes seven years since his last acting gig in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk. So what brought Fox out of retirement? "On a personal level, I wanted to executive produce for the first time in my career," he exclusively told E! News. Matthew Fox played Jack Shephard on "Lost" from 2004 to 2010, winning Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance. Since then, he went on to appear in a number of feature films but retired in 2015 following appearances in the movies "Extinction" and "Bone Tomahawk."
Now the actor is returning to the small screen for "Last Light," a limited series about the collapse of the global oil industry that premieres on Peacock on Sept. 8. Fox explained his decision to return to acting in a Sept. 5 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I was very much attracted to the backdrop in which the story is set, the oil crisis, with this beautiful family unit separated by the crisis and trying to get back together and be reunited," he said, adding that he was also excited to work alongside manager and producer Bill Choi. Matthew Fox kept a mental checklist of things he’d like to accomplish in his career, and once every gig had been crossed out, he made a decision to “walk away from the storytelling business.”
Fox had starred in a pair of hit television shows in Party of Five and Lost, toplined a string of feature films, acted in a Western and jetted across the Atlantic to hit the stage for a play in London’s West End. Bucket list achieved. So, in 2015, the actor retired, taking what seemed like a final bow with back-to-back films Bone Tomahawk and Extinction before settling down in Oregon with his wife and two children.
Not so fast. Another small-screen challenge soon revealed itself. “One of the things that I had never done was executive produce and that was kind of, you know, haunting me a little bit like,...

The Western genre waned in popularity in the 1980s, but 21st-century cinema still has the occasional film that harks to its heyday. Most of these are genre hybrids, like Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” or S. Craig Zahler’s “Bone Tomahawk,” while others, like “Meek’s Cutoff” or “Slow West” attend to the genre’s classic nuances.

Matthew Fox is opening up about his acting hiatus following the conclusion of Lost in 2010.
The 55-year-old shed light on his new Peacock series, Last Light, and how it brought him back to TV screens.
"I kind of had a bucket list in my mind of things that I wanted to accomplish in the business, and after I did Bone Tomahawk in 2014 that had kind of completed the bucket list," Fox said at the Monte-Carlo Film Festival over the weekend, according to Variety.
"I wanted to do a Western. It's a very odd Western, but it's a Western. And so that sort of completed the bucket list."
"At that time in my life, our kids were at an age where I felt like I needed to really reengage," he continued.

Lost alum Matthew Fox is set to star alongside Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) in Peacock’s Last Light, a series adaptation based on Alex Scarrow’s bestselling apocalyptic thriller novel. Fox also will executive produce the series from MGM International TV Productions in association with Nordic Entertainment Group’s Viaplay. Production is set to begin soon in Prague with Film United overseeing physical production.
The five-episode limited drama series is based on Scarrow’s Last Light, which tells the story of a family fighting to survive in a world that has been suddenly thrown into chaos.
Fox will play Andy Neilson, an ex-pat living in London who is one of the world’s leading petro-chemical engineers. He’s brilliant and very in-demand, but his drive and ambition sometimes have been to the detriment of his family life. The story’s unfolding crisis will force Andy to reassess his priorities — both familial and professional.

Typically, film fans are privy to the behind-the-scenes drama that goes into the selection process at film festivals. But as we see every year that events such as Cannes, TIFF, Venice, and others announce their official lineups, there are hundreds of applicants that don’t make the cut. But the decision about why a film isn’t chosen is rarely made public. Well, recently, in the case of the 2015 film, “Bone Tomahawk,” the reasons why it wasn’t selected to take part in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival were made public after the film’s producer spoke out about it.

Cannibal movies are normally always controversial movies. Cannibal Holocaust is probably the film genre fans instantly think of when you’re asked to name a film about people eating other people but there’s a long list of banned and gory movies. Hannibal has had a TV show and many movies, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has had a few highlights, while more recently the coming of age Raw and horror western Bone Tomahawk have shocked audiences. But Brazil’s The Cannibal Club is a very different thing.
It is a kind of dark comedy about sex and cannibalism, which seems a pretty odd thing. If you were unsure what route The Cannibal Club was going to take, the first ten minutes will quickly tell you. As we...

Over the last few years, it’s been fun to watch filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer’s career evolve from films like Some Kind of Hate to Daniel Isn’t Real to his contribution in the anthology film Holidays. And now his latest, Archenemy, has Mortimer traversing new cinematic terrain with his story of an interdimensional superhero named Max Fist (played by Joe Manganiello) who finds himself down on his luck here on planet Earth, and must confront his past so that he can put an end to the reign of tyranny that his sworn enemy, Cleo (Amy Seimetz), is prepared to unleash on our planet.
Archenemy also stars Skylan Brooks, Zolee Griggs, Glenn Howerton, and Paul Scheer and will be released in theaters, on digital, and on demand today, courtesy of Rlje Films.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Mortimer about his latest film, and he discussed his...

Regardless of what many people think, providing professional commentary on films consists of a lot more than just lounging on the sofa all day in comfy clothes as the contents of discs and streaming platforms wash over you. However, one lucky horror fan is getting the chance to do just that.
In a joint effort between CableTV.com and HighSpeedInternet.com, $1,000 is being offered to engage in a 24-hour movie marathon on Halloween, as well as a $50 Starbucks gift card to provide a constant supply of caffeine to stay awake. The winner will also live tweet their experience as they dive ever deeper into a cinematic bloodbath.
The only catch is that you have to be over 18 to apply, and must be eligible to work in the US and be a citizen of the country. If you meet those requirements, though, simply fill in this form and provide 100 words on...

September 2019 brought with it the tragic passing of actor and genre cinema icon Sid Haig, who many probably know best for playing Captain Spaulding from 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses and 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects. Of course, in the series’ trilogy-closer, the recent 3 From Hell, the psychotic clown returned and made one last appearance, though we didn’t see too much of him, as Haig had a very reduced role in the pic.
Still, it’s nice that he was able to be involved in some capacity as it serves as one of his final performances and now, a year after he left us, director Rob Zombie, who helmed the aforementioned trilogy, has paid tribute to his friend, sharing the following about him on social media:
“Well, today marks one year since my buddy Sid Haig left us. We did a lot of stuff together over the twenty years we were friends.
