Title: Spark: A Burning Man Story Directors: Steve Brown, Jessie Deeter Burning Man, an annual week-long event held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada, would seem to be a great subject for a documentary. After all, the festival — which was originally envisioned as a utopian getaway and rebuke to the constrictive nature of modern life’s duties and norms — now draws in more than 50,000 participants, nominally known as “Burners,” each year. It’s become a pop culture touchstone in and of itself, in the process spawning more than 50 regional festivals around the globe — all based on the same 10 operating principles, which include radical inclusion, [ Read More ]

Spark: A Burning Man Story
Directed by Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter
USA, 2013
Spark: A Burning Man Story is at its liveliest when its participants are at their most fractious. Perhaps that’s a bit ironic considering that the yearly Burning Man event in Nevada is typified by how the thousands of people who trek from around the world to the middle of the American desert are characterized by their open, free, giving spirits. But this 90-minute documentary is, essentially, something of a feature-length ad for Burning Man—which has now spread to other regional events year-round. Though it might be a fast-paced education for those who are only vaguely aware of the gathering from its use in pop culture as a punchline, Spark: A Burning Man Story is more surface-level than is fitting or ideal.

The annual Burning Man event in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert is a bit of a mystery for those of us who exist outside certain artistic circles, and as such a bevy of assumptions have built up regarding what exactly happens there for a week each year. It’s a given for example that there are drugs, sex parties, and s’mores, and it’s a known fact that the event’s final night sees a bee-filled cage placed over an outsider’s head before the unlucky soul is locked in a giant, wooden figure and burned alive. But what else is Burning Man about? Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter set out to answer that question with the new doc Spark: A Burning Man Story, and while it conveniently neglects to comment on the bees it does offer an insight into the event’s history and what it takes to organize a gathering with nearly 60,000 visitors. That...

We open with a static shot of a shimmering desert, reminiscent of the intro to High Plains Drifter. Instead of Clint Eastwood's vengeful ghost, something resembling a Subaru Outback emerges. It's as fitting a contrast between that film and Spark: A Burning Man Story as you're likely to get. The setting is Nevada's Black Rock Desert, site of what one event founder describes as an exercise in "radical collective codependency." Charting Burning Man's course from its origins on a San Francisco beach in 1986 to the massive affair currently boasting nearly 60,000 attendees, producer-directors Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter utilize broad access to the event's six founders to offer impressive insight into 27 years of Bm history. They also follow the progress of two artists attendi...

While festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, All Tomorrow's Parties and more have come to represent some the bigger and more popular gatherings of the moment, Burning Man has been doing it longer than all of them. The annual week-long event takes place in the Black Rock Desert, and doesn't just focus on music, but a variety of artistic disciplines, with like-minded souls traveling from around the world to gather and celebrate in a community unlike any other. And now, a documentary is offering a peek at the work it takes to make it happen each year. Directed by Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter, "Spark: A Burning Man Story" spends time with both the organizers and participants to help create a portrait of the individuals that make the festival happen. And in this exclusive clip, we see the tremendous work that takes place just to get the grounds set up, with crews...

With 60,000 tickets that often sell out in under two hours, the allure of Burning Man is indisputable.
But as anyone who follows the festival knows, the playa is not without its controversies. From entry crises to safety concerns to serious questions about law enforcement, Burning Man faces a constant struggle between regulation and the event's free spirited mission.
In their new documentary, "Spark: A Burning Man Story," filmmakers Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter go behind the scenes to explore the inspiration, controversy and gravitational appeal of one of the world's most famous festivals.
The film will celebrate its world premiere next month at Austin's film, music and technology conference, South by Southwest.
"It's a dream come true to be back at SXSW with Spark," said Brown in a press release. "[Burning man founder] Larry Harvey once described his mission in leading Burning Man as creating a place that would give people permission to act on their dreams.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...
