Gerald Wright,Health and Safety officer in the town of Baselricky,has driven his wife away with his fussiness and now shares his house with daughter Susan and her Lesbian partner Vic - who hogs the bathroom so much Gerald has to use the works washroom with its annoying push-button taps. As formidable work colleague Malika makes it clear she expects everybody to remember her birthday a rogue speed bump is spotted,whose removal may involve closing the M25. Gerald buys Malika a trendy scarf but has to return it as it still bears the security tag. Lacking a receipt he is forced to make another visit to the shop and almost fails due to the speed bump. However due to a mix-up in receipts Gerald finds he has given Malika a rather naughty present which does not please her. And he has a further washroom accident.

The Mayor tells Gerald that he must prove that conkers are a health hazard or else he will lose his job. To compromise underling Clive brings in chocolate balls that resemble conkers as a substitute. Back home Gerald is persuaded by Susan to entertain ex-wife Valerie and her hunky,younger boyfriend Kyle, who wants Valerie to return to his native Australia and finance his new gym. Susan thinks he is conning Valerie for her divorce settlement and asks Gerald to put up a fight but Gerald's protocol over supermarket queues proves to be his undoing. On the other hand he impresses the mayor,who has eaten a conker in mistake for a chocolate,thus proving that conkers are a choking hazard.

Having berated Victoria for using the last of the toilet paper Gerald arrives at work to find that a toilet roll thief has been in the Gents so,when Susan buys more paper,he takes a roll to work,stuffed down his trousers - which causes him to be accused of being the thief. When Clive gets a bloodied nose demonstrating playground swing safety Gerald goes for another and is again accused. After the thief has been identified a toilet roll dispenser is provided but Gerald has considerable trouble using it and ends up being accused of vandalism.

Desperate for the opportunity to be the creator of his own hazard warning Gerald sees the chance when he pricks himself with a pin from a new shirt but it is rejected. Susan and Victoria rehearse for the annual ballroom dance championship,previously always won by Gerald and Valerie - until she left him. Gerald aims to enter partnered by Malika,after the mayor deserts her,but is thwarted when the pin pricks him,finally convincing the mayor of the dangers of sharp objects. Malika ultimately drops Gerald as he is clearly not over Valerie leaving him whilst Susan tells her mother that Kyle is unsuitable for her.

Gerald and his team become obsessed with the idea that pavements can be dangerous,despite no such evidence from their survey. Far more dangerous is the land-line in Gerald's kitchen when he literally gets into a tangle after phoning for an appointment at the prostate cancer clinic,only to be put on hold for hours. Victoria unwisely sends a rude picture of herself to an ex-girlfriend by mistake with the result that it becomes a You Tube classic whilst Susan begins to see that Kyle may not be a gold-digger after all but genuinely fond of Valerie.

Gerald has his appointment for a prostate check-up but is reluctant to attend as it is in the afternoon of the ballroom championship. In the meantime his team looks into the American coffee chain Moonbonks and find their paper cups dangerously large. The mayor disagrees as Moonbonks is sponsoring the dance contest and providing its prize. After a rectal examination by a man he had previously accused of queue-jumping Gerald takes to the dance floor with Valerie,winning the prize.
