House of Manson ... pretty good considering the time and budget!
alterego91021 October 2014
I attended the Premier of this film at the Twin Cities Independent Film festival. The film kept my attention at least and there were some things that stood out such as Ryan Kiser's lead role as 'Charlie'. He is obviously a step up from the other actors in this movie and deserves a shot at a higher budget film. I also felt the chemistry of the entire cast was good and made for a believable 'cult family'. The actors playing the parts of Leslie Van Houton, Squeaky Fromme, and Tex Watson were believable and stood out above the other supporting cast. However, the acting for the role of Sharon Tate was unfortunately a disaster. The Susan Atkins actor had the right idea, but I felt she may have just been trying too hard to be crazy/quirky. That being said, I understand that with a higher budget and more time, many scenes could be redone with some extra attention from the director.

During the Q&A with the Director and Cast, it came to light that this movie was filmed in 15 days, covering a 128 page script. Wow ... that in and of itself was amazing! There were some admitted sound and scene transition issues that hopefully will get cleaned up. On that note ... I felt there was a severe over use of music/sound effects. Most every scene had continuous sound effects which was unnecessary. It was distracting at times and took away from the effect of the overall dialog. I assume it was intended to establish a mood, but some of that mood could have been created by the dialog itself. Every scene was shot up close and could have used some wider angles to gain a better experience of the entire landscape (lack of budget most certainly played a role here).

Some people know the Manson story much better than others. The assumption should be that the viewer of the film doesn't know a lot of the details. The characters of the 'family' could have been introduced better. Some of the scenes could have been set up in order to introduce characters instead or relying on the knowledge of the 'Manson' story.

The director said during Q&A that they wanted to show the humanity of Charles Manson and why he may have turned out the way he did (ala Michael Myers - Halloween (2007)). The idea was there, but more time should have been focused on the abuse and abandonment that developed his character. They mentioned that Charlie's mom sold him for a case of beer, so why not add that scene in? Showing Charlie watching his Mom kiss a man (from a crack in a door) does not show a pattern of inappropriate parenting, much less abuse. Dig into that and you might persuade me that he was a victim of poor upbringing at least.

All in all, this was a decent attempt, but I think it could be even more engaging with some additional time and budget. I enjoyed it for what it was. Good job for all who endured the compact 15 days of filming!

This is only my opinion as a movie goer, and I realize it is much more difficult to create an independent film based on what you have to work with. It intrigues me to understand all that goes into creating an entire film with so little budget. I am a fan of the entire scene and wish all involved all the success they deserve for all the hard work they have put into such a film.

Godawful sound
beresfordjd9 May 2017
The sound recording of this film is abysmal - that is the sound mix at any rate. Ryan Kiser as Charlie Manson is pretty good - he certainly looks like him, even if he is no Al Pacino as far as acting goes! It is so difficult to hear what characters are saying at times it spoils the viewing of the movie. The film tries to tell Manson's side of the story - the chaotic upbringing and his spells incarcerated but that side of things is skimmed over and merely mentioned rather than depicted. I guess permissions for music of the times was difficult to get as it seems totally missing from this movie. For the obviously low budget this had it does an okay job but really needed more work on the sound.

tepid (spoilers alert)

Warning: Spoilers
I know a lot about the Manson case and also know one of his former associates so I'd been looking forward to seeing this movie. If you're not familiar with the Manson case then you might be okay with this movie. If you know anything about it though, you'll be disappointed.

I suppose the biggest complaint is with how the murders were depicted. Having Sadie brandishing the gun was a bit jarring since she never touched the gun in the real murders. There were other very distorted depictions and while I realize that some artistic license has to be allowed, too much and the movie is spoiled, especially with a story as well-known as this one is.

The acting in the movie was hit or miss. I didn't find the Manson character to be very convincing and other than the actress paying Susan Atkins, it was hard to tell which girl was which.

Total garbage.
RMS194914 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't care what the budget was, this was pure garbage. Acting was poor. Script was poor and the infamous shaky hand-held camera was out in full glory. Can't show an good action sequence, not to worry, just shake the camera all over the place to cover it up. I'm fed up with that moronic approach to filming.

Want to know about Manson, watch the excellent film Helter Skelter or even a documentary. Steve Railsback gives a remarkable performance. There has been a lot of good films made on shoestring budget. This however is not one of them. Just to take a notorious event is not enough. Try learning some basic skills first.

Terrible, Terrible, did I mention it was Terrible!
williamdickey24 January 2016
What most strikes me about this film is the awful non 60s soundtrack, the horrible soap opera like acting, and the misinterpretation of a culture and a generation. The main character Manson, sort of looks like the real Manson, I guess. It's like the casting director was walking down the street and saw someone who looked like him and said, "Hey you want to be in my Movie?" … Everything about this film is bad, costumes, acting, writing, directing, cinematography, and did I mention acting. It also doesn't respect the dead, remember this is based, I guess, on a true story. The director treats the material like it has been long since been made of legend, it hasn't. How someone could take an interesting event in American history and suck all the interest out is beyond me. You will learn nothing if you watch this, in fact you may forget important things.

Very disappointing
frankimunk9 September 2016
Having just read the book Helter Skelter The True Story (THE MANSON MURDERS) by Vincent Bugliosi,(The prosecutor) I looked forward to this film, but I may have enjoyed it more if I had no knowledge of the history of Charles Manson and his family. This film is shallow with bad acting. I felt I knew more than the film producers. It's really tacky, very roughly scripted, and by the end credits which I always read, finding them informative, this has to be the shortest credits of a film, ever!! Even the acting out of the victims was shot as if being filmed by a mobile phone camera! This film has no redeeming features at all.

There is much written about these people and the heinous crimes, it's a disservice to viewers not to tell it well, with good script, production and some good actors.

The recent release of Restless Souls might make a better subject, as I have yet to see a really decent film about Manson, perhaps if a film was made from the view of the victims...?

Backing the wrong horse.
Howlin Wolf15 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
WHY would you want to tell this story from Manson's perspective?! He is a notorious conman who will lie, distort and manipulate events for his own uses...

Yet there's soaring strings as 'Charlie' doesn't get to see his little boy because he's in prison, and shots of a misunderstood and disconsolate man, wandering the desert because he's been cast out by society...

'Rebel', my foot!

I've never understood those who seek to glorify Manson, and this movie is only another work that tries to do that, in the guise of 'understanding' him.

Don't get me wrong; I support people getting to make the movies they want to make... So if somebody wants to make a film where Manson is 'not such a bad guy after all', then at least be inventive enough to obfuscate matters; don't just have him NARRATE HIS OWN STORY and act like that's redemption secured. If you're going to be inaccurate, then you might as well go hell for leather about it, and claim he rode a magic carpet and urinated glitter... You know, be creative!

There's nothing to understand; he's a scumbag... and this movie only seeks to make a statement by taking a deservedly reviled individual, and attempting to mitigate on his behalf... It's deplorable.

I wish I could give this less than one star
virginialove-3026618 May 2018
I couldn't agree more with William Dickey and RMS1949. I found this on Streampix this morning and thought I'd watch it before I had to begin my workday.

Mary Brunner turned into a blonde, Linda Kasabian turned into a brunette, the only requirement for Susan Atkins appeared to be the ability to make bug-eyes and a weird-looking smile (which seems to be the ONLY idea of indicating "crazy" that "filmmakers" can think of) and you'll find better acting skills in a kindergarten operetta - so I think Mr. Dickey hit their casting process on the head. (Too bad something else didn't get hit on the head before this waste of time was filmed.)

As for the storyline: Jay Sebring and Sharon Tate hear the shots that killed Steven Parent, when police tests showed that not even William Garretson could hear them in the caretaker's cottage? The screenwriters were even incorrect about how pregnant Sharon Tate was; they had Rosemary LaBianca say to her husband as she reads the newspaper, "That poor girl She was seven months pregnant." (Tate was 8.5 months pregnant.) In case the reader thinks I'm nitpicking, I'm not. These were the two least-bad parts of the movie. The rest of the movie goes into a blur of bad.

RMS1949's evaluation summary was perfect: "Total garbage." I will add that this garbage is so rotten that even the Manson girls would pass it up when they went dumpster-diving for ingredients for dinner.

The producer and any investors would've done better to have given the money to Michael Cohen to pay off one or two of Donald Trump's many companions - and then checked themselves into whatever kind of rehab helps clear film professionals' dulled evaluation skills.

I sat through a Strawberry Shortcake movie, a Care Bears movie and "Drop Dead Fred" with my child while she was growing up because I love her, but "House of Manson" makes those three look like Oscar-winning classics.

Maybe the worst film i've ever seen...
fhelen-11 July 2016
It starts bad and gets even worse. Soundtrack=bad. Acting=badder. Script=pitiful. Not even creepy, more like a soap opera, you want a movie about CM to be at least quite creepy! Did not penetrate CM's personality and life at all well, almost made it out like 'he' was the tragedy in the whole thing... Poor little charlie, he only wanted to be loved (and be a rock star). Missed loads of important aspects to the story, failed to build any tension. The squishsquish stabby noises were laughable. Had no interest in any of the characters. You are better off watching the 1976 TV movie helter skelter if you want a good manson film.

House of Manson takes the story Charles Manson Without being over the top
brak01419 October 2014
"House of Manson" is a film that chronicles the life of Charles Manson and focuses in on the events leading up to and including the Sharon Tate murders of 1969. Unlike other Charles Manson biopics that focus in on the sex or the over the top nature of the Tate murder, this one focuses in Charles Manson's influence and connection with his followers, the Manson family as they call themselves.

Charles Manson is portrayed by Minnesota born actor, Ryan Kiser, who seemed to approach the character in a very serious tone and does a fantastic job conveying the crazy yet brilliant way Charles Manson was able to draw followers into his cult.

Devanny Pinn co-stars as one of Manson's followers Susan Atkins and gives a chilling performance as her screen presence is freaky. Pinn truly becomes Atkins on screen as the facial reactions make you think this women is completely off her rocker and has no moral compass at all. An overall amazing performance by Pinn.

"House of Manson" does suffer from some technical flaws as the sound isn't completely smoothed and could use some more attention by a sound mixer. The filmmakers even admitted in a Q&A following the world premiere that some of the sound transitions were going to need to be looked at. The film also has a saturated look that doesn't look completely intentional. The image doesn't pop off the screen as some movies do that have a more crisp and sharp look to it.

Overall, "House of Manson" is a great portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous Charles Manson. It doesn't get too crude or violent as previous films about the same subject matter, it takes the source material as it is and conveys the story in a very tasteful matter. With a great cast and direction by Brandon Slagle, "House of Manson" is definitely worth checking out when it later finds distribution.

The biography of a deranged, sycophantic, manipulative psychopath which nobody wanted or needed
seamuscasey-9445020 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This film is a prime example of what is wrong with modern cinema. Originality? No. Let's try and rehash the story of a murderous cult with the notable absence of anything new, interesting or is in any way improving upon what has come before. The considerable lack of respect for the victims is apparent throughout the duration of this train wreck; with their integration being used only as a sort of pre-massacre pep talk. There was no acknowledgement that these were people with families, lives and aspirations. Only that they provided and target for the knives of the two-dimensional 'protagonists' of the film. If you are looking for a film where the acting is similar to that of a second-rate sitcom, containing gratuitous violence and multiple scenes of people being stabbed to death on the floor of their homes; then by all means, give it a watch. But if you're looking for something slightly more visceral than that, steer clear from biographic stories of sadistic serial killers. Leave that to the people who give House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects 10/10 and wax lyrically about them.

A different view of a well-known criminal figure
bigbinder22 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
To start off this is my first review on IMDb. I'm a film fan but am not someone who is particularly chatty. I decided to register an account after attending the Twin Cities Festival after speaking to the director and producer of this movie since appreciating their original take on subject matter that is part of our cultural lexicon and therefor constantly remade into both TV and film material, sometimes good and sometimes bad.

Something they made clear in the Q&A following the film's premiere October 18 was that they felt that the Manson story had been told many times but that none of the previous versions really showed the Charlie Manson character for who he was, which was a master manipulator but still a "living, breathing human being" to quote them.

Local boy Ryan Kiser portrays Charlie with a subtlety and earnestness that makes the character all the more frightening. His Charlie is someone who you could have an innocent conversation with that could haunt you later. If you want to show how someone can manipulate scores of young adults you don't portray them as a lunatic like previous Charlie stories, you portray them as someone comforting who you want to be around, and the script, direction, and performances did a great job doing this.

The story is told on two timelines. One of them starts with Charlie's arrest at Barker ranch after the Manson family crimes with Charlie being interviewed by an attorney to stand trial and the other being a pick and choose of the events of Charlie's life that climaxes with the killings. This type of approach sometimes works and can sometimes be confusing but to me it worked. It's clear cut which timeline is which and I didn't find any problem with this. There isn't a lot of emphasis on the supporting cast since this is a Charlie story but I enjoyed their performances especially that of Tex Watson who is portrayed as an eager to please sociopath. The look he gave Sharon Tate before stabbing her was almost a little too good. Patricia and Susan were good too. You really felt that these were kids who didn't understand how horrible their crimes are and would die for Charlie, as a very tense scene plays out.

The other reviews pointed out that this was an early cut of the film and that there were some sound problems that were gonna be fixed and that some scenes may be cut out before the movie comes out on DVD. The director said that this screening is going to determine what scenes those are so I am curious which ones they choose. I hope the DVD release is announced soon. This film is Charlie's story and I'm glad someone finally told it without making it about other things for once.

The most adorable puppy eyed Charles Manson ever!
salviolog14 February 2016
There is very little that can be done in a new way with a Manson Family movie at this point. There has been made at least a dozen movies about that case since 1971, one of which came out while the trial was still going on.

The formula is always the same, and anyone who at least read through the Wikipedia page about the Tate/La Bianca case would know exactly what's about to happen: first Charlie is loving and philosophical, then he becomes gradually more crazy, building up to the point of Helter Skelter and, ultimately, the climax.

So it's at least refreshing to see a new sort of Manson, sort of timid and meek, just a misguided ex-con who created a situation that got out of control. It's a little provocative, probably appealing to the pro-Manson crowd, but nevertheless, it is something new.

Problem is, this performance by Ryan Kiser comes off as bleak and dispassionate, and the change in Manson's behavior does not make sense, the character doesn't change gradually - in fact, he almost doesn't change at all, he sleepwalks through the movie up till the end, and there is zero of real Manson's energy put into this performance. I never seen Charles Manson outside his prison interviews and rare footage available on the Internet, but I am sure that he was never this boring in real life. People have always described him as wild and energetic, and Ryan's Manson is anything but these.

In short, if you are interested in Manson Family, check out this movie, but don't expect anything radically new, the story has been told a dozen times, and there's little that can be added to it but speculations and interpretations.

Horrible

Bad acting, incorrect history, awful plot. This movie tries to create a hero out of Manson which is really ridiculous because he was a real low life and delusional. Manson was a lay about druggie bum who took advantage of anyone he could to just lie around, not work, not shower while doing drugs. He was a no-talent bum.

johndu-7839029 December 2017
The guy playing Manson may have a good look but that's where the positives end. Some actors have really thrown themselves into a role and lived their character long before the actual filming - think Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison. This guy seems to have misread the script and thrown himself into the role of Richie Cunningham from Happy Days. The whole film feels like a rehearsal, a bad rehearsal. It is a terrible, laughable film that sounds like it has been recorded on an old Nokia phone. Top it off with a cheese rock soundtrack that has no relevance to the era it's supposed to be portraying and you have yourself one unwatchable waste of space and time.

Good story, so-so movie
jollyjumpup15 August 2023
The story for this film was solid, if straightforward, depicting the Manson family murders and a few post-murder interrogations, with a sympathetic nod to Manson's early life. The dialog was serviceable at best.

The biggest problem with the film is the casting. While Ryan Kiser bears a passing resemblance to Manson, he lacks the sinister gravitas needed for the role. He comes close at times but overall he's just too innocuous in both looks and demeanor.

The Manson gang is even more poorly cast. Their acting is fine when it comes to the line readings, but they're generally too old for their roles and are unconvincing as hippies. The victims are also badly cast and all the characters are poorly developed. Manson's lawyer is the only convincing character in the lot.

The locations are meager. The "upscale" dwelling of Tate has the same sickly yellow walls as every other house in the movie.

All that said, if you want to see a basic depiction of the crimes, this one is fairly accurate.

Sorry
twelve-house-books3 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So let me get this straight. Now we are supposed to feel sorry for this demonic son of Satan? Poor Charlie. So misunderstood. He couldn't help how he turned out because he was so mistreated as a child. There is no reason ever to make a film which seeks to explain why a murdering, brainwashing criminal became that way. I mean, why not make a movie about Hitler's childhood so we can feel sorry for him; try to understand him? This was a waste of time, effort, money, and talent. But, sadly, there are people out there, and I have personally met them, who believe that Manson was interesting, creative, and somebody worth listening to. Can't we just let the fvcker die and be done with the whole horrific thing?

Brutal but really good
frompagescreen11 January 2016
Beginning with the October 1969 raid of the Charles Manson ranch in California, and the capture of the infamous cult leader. Manson, written and directed by Brandon Sagle is actually the first film I have seen that gives me backstory into who Charles Manson was and why he did what he did. (I know there are other projects out there, but I just haven't seen them yet)

Titled House of Manson in other countries, but retitled Manson for its UK release. The film is beautifully filmed and has a wonderfully cinematic 1970s feel to it, the sort of feel that I got from Rob Zombies The Devils Rejects and the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre (yes I know that one was actually filmed in the 70s, but you see my point hopefully. The look and feel to the film works wonderfully seeing as this is a period piece taking us back to the beginning so we can learn about the Manson parents, the Manson childhood and of course we the audience just know the dark times to come and Manson shows it all.

Ryan Kiser (Truth or Dare) is the perfect choice to play Charles Manson and he comes off as scary as they can get without going over the top with it.even causing the audience to feel somewhat sorry for him in a few places, but never letting us forget just how insane and dangerous Charles Manson was and is. There is always the feeling when people think about Charles Manson was just a crazed lunatic, but in reality and shown here in Manson is the truth that people found him very charismatic and were hugely supportive of him and won over by his words and personality. That was a powerful tool but sadly added to the fact he is a crazy as they get. Makes for a very dangerous recipe.

Devanny Pinn (The Black Dahlia Haunting) is perfect in the role of Susan Atkins, one of the cult of Manson who is also captured during the 1969 raid following the Sharon Tate killings. Without even mentioning how good Devanny is in the role, I could go on about just how damn creepy her glare is in Manson.. Devanny and Ryan's are the best performances in the film, which isn't meant to take anything away from the other cast, its just that Ryan and Devanny are so damn good There are scenes in Manson that will chill you without a single word, but a single glance and head movement is all that is needed.

So is Manson a horror film? Is it a biopic? Is it a drama? Well yes to all really but horror fans, please be assured that when the violence kicks in. It sure as hell kicks in. When we finally get to the Tate killings, it doesn't hold back, and when thinking this is an actual real life event it just shocks you to the bone. (or at least it did me) The film could be described as a slow burner, but I felt like it was more a pressure cooker, raising its temperature until the lid flies off and hits us in the face.

The moment we see Charles Manson first knock on the door of the Polanski residence, my heart sunk as I have read many books detailing the events Hollywood biographies that mention the fact that people knew of Charles Manson, he was the charismatic hippie kid that hung around the neighborhood. Knowing what was coming next and how far would the film go in showing it, made me 100% nervous. I was right, when the lid flies off this pressure cooker it certainly does fly off and whilst the film 100% doesn't glorify the violence and insanity of that night, it doesn't hold back either and caused me to look away on a few occasions. Brutal, but realistic with it. Which I would hope is what the filmmakers were going for. What I also loved about the film and its not a spoiler, I promise. Is that over the end credits. We are given text updates on what happened to a lot of the main 'names' in this tragedy. Not just a single line but quite a few lines which told me things I didn't know.

All in all Manson (or House of Manson if you are outside the UK) is a tough watch and I still cant work ouit if Id class it as more biopic/drama than horror. It certainly has a lot of horror in it and will make you cringe beyond belief if you have one ounce of humanity in you. Highly recommended to everyone other than anyone who knows anyone involved in the real life events.

Manson comes to life as an almost-human being!
amy-suzanne22 October 2014
I LOVED this movie!! Ryan Kiser was absolutely stellar as Charles Manson, and Devanney Pinn was psychotically perfect as Susan Atkins; the rest of the cast was just as mesmerizing! Rather than just another horror/slasher flick, this movie delves into the mind of Charles Manson, to see how he turned out the way he did, and to be brutally honest, I almost felt a little sorry for him by the end of the picture - and to me, it's a great movie that can make you feel bad for one of the most heinous criminals in US history. The music soundtrack was amazing as well; I didn't move an inch during the entire movie, well worth a viewing!!

Kiser is god of Manson!
JaggedDagger15 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I am obsessed with the case of Charles Manson! I have seen all Manson movies, even ones like The Cult which the names are changed. This is one of my favorite Manson movies. I love this one like the Helter Skelter and Jim Vanbebber The Manson Family. This is new and not the same story we see over and over again and it shows the murders in all their bloody glory.

I wish we could see more Manson movies with his life before the Family! I want to see him and his wife robbing banks and Manson being a pimp for prostitutes in Hollywood!! This movie does not have that what I like what I see! I love the actor Ryan Kiser as Manson. He makes you like Manson and that's a scary thing!

EPIC Award-Winning Movie! TWO Thumbs Up!!
knowlesjarrod19 May 2016
As President of WideScreen Festival in Miami, FL, we had the pleasure of screening this film in March 2015. It was nominated for Best Feature, Director, and Actor. It took home the Win for Best Actor. Ryan Kiser nailed his role and had the authentic look and feel of Manson, as we remember him. And how can we forget the amazingly talented Devanny Pinn, who portrayed the role of Susan Atkins. Directed by Brandon Slagle, this was extremely well-executed and deserving of all the praise it has been getting lately. I highly recommend this film and will be looking forward to any other work from these fine and talented producers!
