Earlier today, I watched 'Harlan County USA". Perhaps I should have watched this film first, because they are very much a companion piece to one another. "Harlan" shows the poor conditions the miners work in and the low wages they get. It is a powerful film.

But in many ways, "Men and Dust" is just as powerful. The location is different, and the time period is a few decades earlier, but the theme is very much the same: miners are going into dangerous conditions, often getting sick or even dying. And for what? Even more interesting looking back on it now (2016) is how we hear they are mining lead for children's toys. Wow... even after the mining is over, the chance of illness is spread to the customer.

This incredibly powerful film lasts for only 16 minutes or so but its wallop is huge. It tells the story of miners in a small region of Missouri and Oklahoma and the injustices and chances they were forced to take for their back-breaking labor. They mined lead and zinc but there was also a risk of inhaling silicone dust. The film is narrated by Will Geer and there is a background accompaniment of voices (untrained) singing folksongs. The narrator occasionally joins the rhythm of the music during his lines. We can see and feel the misery of these people from the Ozarks who never complain. One shot near the end shows men in the hospital who resemble human skeletons from the Third World. The film is an experience I won't forget. It will be officially cleaned up and preserved, I'm happy to add. This merits 5 stars.
