After Joseph Gordon-Levitt finished his spec script for “Mr. Corman,” the Apple TV Plus series about a young man with musical aspirations who struggles with anxiety, he showed it to director Rian Johnson. The two have collaborated on such projects as “Looper” and “Knives Out” and have come to know each other well. So well, in fact, that Johnson’s feedback of, “I know you and I know you’ll want to play in puddles of fantasy” helped turn the project from a simple live-action comedy to one that dabbles in animated musical moments and magical realism.
“From that point forward I really wanted to play with the subjectivity,” Gordon-Levitt tells Variety. “Realism is great and I love Cassavetes movies, for example, but I also really love Terry Gilliam or Michel Gondry — filmmakers that aren’t necessarily showing what real life looks like objectively, but are showing what it feels like subjectively.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest big name star to set up a project at Apple.
Variety has learned from sources that Gordon-Levitt is set to star in, write, and executive produce a drama series currently in the works at the nascent streamer titled “Mr. Corman.” It is said to follow an elementary school teacher grappling with adulthood in Los Angeles. Gordon-Levitt would produce under his HitRECord banner with A24 also producing.
Apple declined to comment.
Gordon-Levitt recently starred in the Amazon series “Comrade Detective.” His other TV credits include “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Roseanne,” “The Powers That Be,” and “Dark Shadows.” He won an Emmy in 2014 for creative achievement in interactive media for his series “HitRECord on TV.” He is primarily known for his film work and was nominated for Golden Globes for his roles in the films “50/50” and “(500) Days of Summer.” His other film roles include “Inception,” “The Walk,...

The Campaign Begins: Inside the First Weekend Push to Woo Academy Voters with Food, Swag, and Celebs
Truth is, while there are about 6,000 voting Academy members, it can take only 300 or so Oscar votes to get a movie nominated. Hence all the relentless campaigning, which is in full gear, as distributors, foreign countries, and Oscar-whisperers plan and execute relentless rounds of screenings with public appearances — at lunches, Q&A panels, premieres, DVD launch parties, and “holiday” fetes.
Check out this slice of the past few days to get a sense of all the wining and dining that goes on. Academy members are being constantly wooed, just like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who vote on the Golden Globes, with yummy food, drink, music, and celebrities —despite various attempts by the Academy to monitor and limit the scale of all this campaigning.

Pivot just couldn’t pivot fast enough.
The small cable channel shuts down on Monday, ending its short life with the film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” the 2005 movie about Edward R. Murrow produced by Pivot owner Participant Media.
The movie’s title is an appropriate farewell for Pivot, and perhaps also serves as a message for the cable industry in general – as more networks face an uncertain future in the wake of so-called “skinny bundles” (cable packages with fewer channels) and the growth of cord-cutting.
“Some of the cable networks are pulling in very small audiences,” says one production chief whose company produced for Pivot. “How long do you stick with it?”
For Participant Media, it was just over three years. IndieWire spoke with past and present Pivot insiders about the network’s brief run, and the factors that led to its quick demise – although no one wanted to speak on the record,...

Pivot, the short-lived cable network of Participant Media, is going dark this fall, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ve seen the last of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s HitRecord on TV series. The variety series, which aired for two seasons on Pivot, was a creation of Gordon-Levitt and his crowd-sourced production company, hitRECord. In a video posted to hitRECord’s website on Tuesday night, the actor-director confirmed, “We won’t be doing a third season for Pivot.” Of any potential future for HitRecord on TV elsewhere, he said, “Whether or not we’ll be doing a third season for somebody else — that’s really a big question mark right now, and there’s lots and lots of kind of complicated variables that still remain to be worked out as far as whether we will be doing a third season of that show for someone else. Participant Media is shutting down Pivot TV, the millennial-facing network it launched four years ago to entertainment and encourage social activism. The network, which allowed viewers to watch on cable or via livestream, was home to shows including Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s “HitRecord on TV” and “Raising McCain,” hosted by Meghan McCain. It also aired “Please Like Me,” an Australian comedy-drama created and written by Josh Thomas. The network reaches 50 million homes. Filmmakers have talked for years about the idea of adapting Neil Gaiman's Sandman, but when you look at the source material it becomes very clear why that's such a challenging task. On beyond the stylistic challenges that come with trying to create something akin to the comic's art, there is the fact that the larger story being told doesn't have a conventional structure. Because of this, some have wondered if the source material might be better suited for a television adaptation, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt disagrees. Why? Because he says the urge would be too great to just strait-up copy the source material. The actor - who is aboard to star in, produce as well as possibly direct an upcoming Sandman movie - recently did an Ama session on Reddit to promote the second season of his show HitRECord On TV, and addressed the issue of movies vs. television for...

It was with genuine trepidation that I approached Joseph Gordon-Levitt to tell him that Season 2 of Pivot's "HitRECord on TV" is a much more polished entity than the first. With its anything-goes crowd-sourced ethos, "HitRECord on TV" has always seemed to thrive on its rough-around-the-edges and lunatics-running-the-asylum aesthetic, so there was at least a chance that Gordon-Levitt might recoil from the notion. "Oh as such a compliment, man!" Gordon-Levitt laughed. Naturally, the "Brick" and "The Walk" star credits the improvement of polish to "more community involvement" and getting better at "the process of mass and open collaboration." Indeed, the second season, which premieres on Friday (June 12) night on Pivot finds the show selecting from as many as 18,000 community submissions on topics ranging from The No.2 to Darkness. It also helps when you have Gordon-Levitt playing Mc, lead storyteller and repertory player and bring in celebrity buddies including Anne Hathaway and...

The face of television is changing. Cable and internet shows are pushing boundaries that mainstream network channels are afraid to touch. Reality shows are starting to lose their grip on an increasingly jaded public, and the audience is starting to want a more active role in the shows they’re watching. Sitcoms seem to be struggling to gain traction and dramas are becoming more elaborate and intricately plotted to keep viewers. The serialized story line seems to be getting more popular.
Plotted shows with a steady cast are more expensive to produce and with DVR services, On Demand, and other alternative ways to view content, ad space is becoming more limited and less relevant. Does making cheaper TV mean that the quality has to suffer? Not necessarily. It does mean, however, that viewers are going to need to be more open-minded about what they’re watching.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt must love his royales with cheese, because he’s about to play romantic hit man Vincent Vega in Evan Goldberg’s reading of Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning screenplay “Pulp Fiction” at Film Independent at Lacma on Thursday night. Additionally, “Masters of Sex” starlet Lizzy Caplan will play an unspecified role. Gordon-Levitt has big shoes — and a bigger suit — to fill, as the role was originated by John Travolta in Tarantino’s classic crime drama, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. As evidenced by his new show “HitRECord on TV,” Gordon-Levitt will have no problem dancing should Goldberg ask him to.

In honor of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's 33rd birthday Monday (Feb. 17), here's a tribute to his rather remarkable talent of being a true song-and-dance man in this day and age. In Hollywood of yore, men like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Danny Kaye were headlining movies all over the entertainment landscape -- and not just movies, but movies with beautiful songs and dance numbers.
Nowadays, it's a much rarer commodity. Singers are singers, actors are actors and, well, dancing isn't something you see very often, particularly from men. So happy birthday, Jgl. If Hollywood ever wanted to remake "Singin' in the Rain," you'd be the guy to tap.
You can catch Jgl on TV each week hosting his latest project, "HitRECord on TV," which features a theme around which the included short films, music and other forms of art are based. It airs Saturday nights at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on Pivot.

The screenplay was written by Levine and will be produced by Sony. It's looking to start filming as quickly as the summer. They just need to get Anna Kendrick on board to complete the circle.

This post is presented in partnership with Participant Media's new television network Pivot and its series "Hitrecord On TV," airing Saturdays at 10pm Et/Pt. Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be only 32 years old, but he's been acting on screen for a quarter century, having started as a child in television movies and guest roles. He's since evolved into a major film talent, impressing in both indies and blockbusters and making his feature directorial debut last year with "Don Jon," which premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. He recently made a return to the small screen with "Hitrecord On TV," a collaboratively made reimagining of the variety show now airing on Pivot. With Gordon-Levitt back on the medium that for many people provided an introduction to him as an actor, we thought we'd take a look at his work on the big screen to date with this list of our picks...

Way back in 2005, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his brother created HitRecord.org, a collaborative website where artists could work together to create new works of art. Nine years later, the group has grown exponentially, to the point that they have developed a variety show, hitRECord on TV, to highlight the collaborations and tell unique stories.
HitRecord on TV is one of the more interesting TV ventures I’ve seen in a while. It’s kind of a Generation Y variety show, with it’s kinetic energy, wild inventiveness and the sense of community each piece has created. I screened the first three episodes and there’s a lot to like with this show. Each show has a given theme (Number One, Fantasy, and Trash, respectively) and the show works as like a patchwork of ideas. There’s a musical number per episode, some sort of short film,...

Exclusive: Just after previewing the first three episodes of his TV series Hitrecord On TV, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his Hitrecord exec producer Jared Geller have set a first-look deal with Participant Media and its youth-centric TV station Pivot. This comes after the show Gordon-Levitt created got an 8-episode order for a second season. The series debuted yesterday on the upstart Pivot cable channel, for which Gordon-Levitt also is a creative adviser. Said Pivot President Evan Shapiro: “Joe is the kind of artist we envisioned when we created Pivot. He is a director, actor, writer and disruptor who understands how to use every form of media to engage our audience.” It’s only the second time that a TV series was featured on the Sundance program, but this series is directly intertwined with the festival. I watched the first episode and noticed a stylistic symmetry to other anthology shows, most particularly Sesame Street,...

If Aereo’s legal battles with the broadcasters were left up to Sundance Film Festival attendees, the streaming service would win in a landslide. “We’ve been sued by 17 media companies,” said Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia today on a Sundance panel on the subject of on creativity and change. The words were barely out of Kanojia’s mouth before the packed room broke out in cheers and applause. “You just won the Oscar, my friend!” bellowed moderator and former MySpace president Jason Hirschhorn as the more than 150 people in the Filmmaker’s Lounge continued clapping. “I don’t mean that as a trophy but as a fact,” the clearly surprised Kanojia added.
