How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.

Marilyn Monroe has now been portrayed onscreen in practically as many titles as she herself starred in. Adding to the selection is BBC Studios with a forthcoming series about the events leading up to the iconic actress's death at 36 from a barbiturate overdose in 1962. Tentatively titled The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe, the limited series will be partly informed by Keith Badman's 2010 biography The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe.
Written by Dan Sefton, who previously created UK medical dramas Trust Me and The Good Karma Hospital, the series will look at Monroe's career aspirations and frustration over being typecast, as well as her highly publicized romantic relationships and rumored affairs with John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Adelstein and ITV Studios, will adapt J. Randy Taraborrelli’s bestselling biography Jackie, Janet & Lee: The Secret Lives of Janet Auchincloss and Her Daughters, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill, for television, with Taraborrelli and Emmy-nominated Keri Selig on board to produce.
Published earlier this year by St. Martin’s Press, the book paints an extraordinary psychological portrait of two famous sisters – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill – and their ferociously ambitious mother – Janet Auchincloss. Its content is based on hundreds of new interviews with friends and family of the Bouviers, including their half-brother, as well as letters and journals.
Taraborrelli and Intuition Productions’ Selig will produce along with Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein and Becky Clements.
“Randy immediately captivated readers with his account of Janet Auchincloss and her daughters, Jackie and Lee, in his book.

Add “Furlough” to the long list of Tessa Thompson movies hitting the big screen in 2018. The actress already has the acclaimed “Annihilation” in theaters nationwide, and “Furlough” is the second of two indies after “Sorry to Bother You” dropping later this year. The film is directed by “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe” filmmaker Laurie Collyer.
Thompson stars as a prison guard who is tasked with bringing a hell-raising inmate (Melissa Leo) home to say goodbye to her dying mother. The two form an unexpected bond as their trip spirals out of control. Anna Paquin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Edgar Ramirez co-star.
“Furlough” is set to be released by IFC Films later this year. Watch the trailer below.

If you've been enjoying Susan Sarandon on Feud: Bette and Joan, you're in luck.
She'll be sticking around television for the foreseeable future. It seems Sarandon has been bitten by the TV bug!
While she's had guest starring roles in the past, none have been quite as notable as these. Up next? A major recurring arc on Ray Donovan Season 5.
Sarandon has had other roles in television.
Aside from one-offs and movies, she had a recurring arc on Rescue Me as Alicia Green.
Alicia got involved with Franco at just about the time he began getting more involved with his daughter, Keela, and that made for quite a dramatic relationship between Alicia and Franco because of how Alicia felt about Keela needing a family.
Sarandon also had a recurring arc on HBO's The Big C starring Laura Linney and Oliver Platt. Sarandon's character becomes a spiritual guru to Platt's character and things run amok.

We don't blame you, Kate Winslet. In what might be one of our most favorite candid photos of the night, the nominated actress was photographed getting a little touchy-feely with Susan Sarandon's breasts while posing for a photo alongside the star and Michael Shannon at the 2016 SAG Awards. It's a little unclear whether or not Winslet just wanted to cop a quick feel, or if she was covering Sarandon up for the snapshot, because our girl Susan was werkin' it in the cleavage department for the award show. The 69-year-old actress, who was nominated for her role in The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, was serving up a healthy dose of sexy tonight in a revealing white pantsuit combo that showed...

The 2016 SAG award nominations were announced this morning. A few notable names were left off the list (no Jennifer Lawrence) while other categories had pretty much what everyone expected (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series). Critical favorite "Spotlight" got a few nominations, but missed out on the best actor categories. And "Creed" is nowhere to be seen, despite buzz for stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. In happier news, Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, and Mark Rylance got nominations in multiple solo categories, because the SAG awards just love British people. Elba is nominated for "Beast of No Nation" and "Luther," Mirren for "Woman in Gold" and "Trumbo," and Rylance for "Bridge of Spies" and "Wolf Hall." Mirren and Elba also got a nomination each as part of ensemble casts. So, without further ado, here are your nominees: Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading...

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

While part one of Lifetime's The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe showed the bombshell's rough childhood and rise to fame, the second half was all about the star's tragic demise. As the men and movies piled up, the fame started to become too much for poor Norma Jean (Kelli Garner) -- and, well, you know how it ends. Part two opened in a smoky, boozy bar where we were introduced to baseball player Joe Dimaggio (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), setting the tone for what’s to come. You know: [...]...

The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe has everything you expect from a Lifetime miniseries: drugs, sex, scandal, and a mentally unstable acting legend! The two-part TV movie examines the life and times of the woman formerly known as Norma Jean, beginning with a two-hour installment all about the gone-too-soon superstar's early life. Kelli Garner stars as the titular blonde bombshell, while Susan Sarandon tackles Monroe's mother, Gladys. That's right: Sarandon and Nicole Kidman both starred in late May Lifetime movies. In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

Lifetime's mini-series "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe" debuts on May 30, prompting the question: What possible secrets can there still be about Marilyn Monroe?
Quite a few, apparently, from the identity of her birth father, to the nature of her fatal overdose at age 36 -- was it suicide, accident, or murder? In 2012, on the 50th anniversary of her death, Moviefone previously published "25 Things You Didn't Know About Marilyn Monroe." Turns out that list barely scratched the surface. Here, then, are 25 more.
1. Monroe's birth certificate from 1926 lists her birth name as Norma Jeane Mortenson. The last name was a misspelling of the surname of her mother's second husband, Martin Mortensen, who separated from Gladys before she became pregnant. Soon after, she reverted to her first married name, Baker, and gave that name to her daughter.
2. Gladys later told Norma Jeane that her father was Gladys' boss, Charles Gifford, who looked like...

It takes more than a breathy voice and a golden dye job to play Norma Jeane Mortenson, who the world better knows as Marilyn Monroe, that most celebrated and troubled of Hollywood idols. Kelli Garner certainly throws herself into the title role of Lifetime’s two-night miniseries The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, adapted from the 2009 biography of the same name by J. Randy Taraborrelli. Yet she never seems to be doing anything more than celebrity karaoke, rarely digging deep beneath the long succession of hairstyles and form-fitting clothes. It’s not entirely her fault. The teleplay by Stephen

Marilyn Monroe was a study in contradictions. She was the giddy, cooing blonde who became one of America’s haughtiest sex symbols, as well as a woman haunted by a thorny relationship with her mentally ill mom and the pressures of fame. The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, a two-night mini-series on Lifetime, tries to peer into the woman behind the legend, opening up the scars that most viewers couldn’t see under the flash and sizzle of the big screen. However, the mini-series is too disjointed and melodramatic to completely work as a biopic. Nevertheless, Kelli Garner is masterful as Monroe, digging into the pain and vulnerability of a cultural icon without ever succumbing to mere impersonation. It’s a terrific performance, the magnetic core of an otherwise muddled misfire.

After the travesty that was the Aaliyah television biopic, I would think that people have gotten enough of Lifetime’s biopic projects, all of them varying in degrees of watchability. If anyone should be tired of them, it should be Lifetime itself. Chicago – Portraying Stephen Hawking, as Eddie Redmayne did in “The Theory of Everything,” required an intense physicality and emotionalism that was projected from different angles, much more challenging than a usual biographical role. In this instance, Redmayne projects the feeling of Hawking’s time and space.
Eddie Redmayne has been on a quick ascension path in his film career, while also conquering television and theater in his native England. After notable roles in the last three years in “My Week with Marilyn” and “Les Misérables,” Redmayne has took on the difficult task of playing Stephen Hawking from a healthy, genius-level university student to the wheelchair bound and computer-voiced theorist with a degenerative nerve disease (Als, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The performance is remarkable on many levels, but especially in communicating the soul and love – beyond a physical handicap – upon which a human being exists.
