The Real Naked Chef!
thalassafischer27 March 2023
This is the most delightful and life affirming documentary that I have ever watched about Sicily. Obviously Sicilian culture has an entirely different pull on the emotions than some other regions of Italy, but other documentaries I've watched about Palermo in particular were so relatively dry, Arabic history and mafia-focused, that even scenes of the street market seem a bit forlorn and poorly edited by the sort of people who prefer to stay at the Hilton and have air-conditioning on full-blast.

The first episode begins with one of the most charming restaurant owners they possibly could have showcased, and while their tour of Palermo also mentions the blended history and mafia problems, something about Sicily Unpacked is earthy and real, never boring or overly dogmatic, and also blessedly free of what I call "white man shows me the world." I find James May an utterly distasteful host for world travel shows, and I can assure you that Chef Giorgio and Andrew make infinitely less irritating virtual traveling companions.

Or at least they did in 2012. I highly recommend Sicily Unpacked over the other Unpacked series, particularly Rome which emits a kind of "we're just here to our jobs" vibe while in Sicily the two best buddies appear to be genuinely excited about life and having fun.
