Not letting the success of Ape vs Monster go to waste The Asylum is back with Ape vs. Mecha Ape. This time they’ve brought in Marc Gottlieb to write and direct. While it’s only his second feature, the other was Cousin Howard back in 1995, and the first one for The Asylum he’s written several scripts for them including Jungle Run, 2025 Armageddon, and Aquarium of the Dead. Can he kick the franchise into gear after its dismal first film?
Ape vs. Mecha Ape opens with a chemical weapons plant that looks like an old warehouse being attacked by what looks like the giant ape Abraham. A few explosions later we see that it’s actually a giant, well-armed, robot which makes short work of the plant’s security.

How the can you not watch a horror film called Big Freaking Rat? Give your film a title that involves a oversized creatures and I’m there. Extra, extra! There's a new journalist at The Hawkins Post who's about to stir up trouble on Stranger Things. Fortifying its rock-solid main cast with new characters, the Netflix series' third season will introduce us to sketchy reporter Bruce, an up-to-no-good newsie with questionable morals and a twisted comedic sensibility. If the baddie in the latest season three trailer looks familiar to you, that's because you've probably seen him before. Bruce is played by none other than Jake Busey, who's been terrifying us for years with his wild-card characters on TV and in films. And yes, if you recognize that last name, he is indeed Gary Busey's son.
The 47-year-old actor is known for his part as evil serial killer Johnny Bartlett in the 1996 film The Frighteners (below). According to Busey, the Duffer Brothers loved him in that movie so much that they created the character Bruce just for him.

German filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmark made a splash in the foreign language box office over a decade ago with The Lives of Others, which took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. He is back again with Sony Pictures Classics for Never Look Away, which is also vying for Oscar this year. Also out in theaters beginning Friday is Greenwich Entertainment’s WWII-era drama, The Invisibles, which was the first pick up for the company back in 2017. And on a decidedly different note, Cinedigm is mixing camp and horror with Dead Ant starring Tom Arnold and Sean Astin.
Also this weekend, Focus Features is taking Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman back to theaters following its six Oscar nominations. The company said the film, which grossed over $48.5M in its initial run in theaters starting last August, will play 168 theaters around the country beginning Friday. The full list of films screening at this year's Glasgow Frightfest, part of the Glasgow Film Festival, was revealed today. Lords Of Chaos, the story of Norwegian black metal band Mayhem (who were linked to a series of church burnings and whose guitarist was murdered by a fellow musician), will open the three day horror spectacular. It will close with The Hoard, by the makers of Pontypool - a horror comedy involving haunte houses.
Highlights set to screen in between include science fiction thriller Freaks, starring Bruce Dern, in which a seven-year-old is tempted to open a forbidden door; festival hit Dead Ant, in which a group of musicians have a very bad trip; and gothic horror Automata, which sees an antiques expert uncovering something nasty in the Highlands.
There's an extensive line-up of guests confirmed so far, including Scottish auteurs Lawrie Brewster and Sarah Daly, and Swedish exploitation.

"We're on a spiritual quest, here!" Wtf is this?! Cinedigm has released a new trailer and a new poster for the indie horror comedy, rock band drug trip film Dead Ant, described as "Spinal Tap meets Tremors!" Okay, you have my attention. The synopsis for this is hilarious and pretty much sums it up way better than we could. When the 1989 "one-hit-wonder" glam-metal band "Sonic Grave" embark on a trip to Coachella in hopes of a comeback, their peyote trip pit stop in Joshua Tree incites an "unworldly" viscous attack, and they must "rock" themselves out of harms way. This stars Tom Arnold, Sean Astin, Sydney Sweeney, Jake Busey, Leisha Hailey, and Rhys Coiro. As much as it seems like a fun concept for a film, this looks really terrible. Especially the ant VFX, which are so bad it's hard to even watch this. Unless you're on peyote. Here's the...

Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Ashes in the Snow, the narrative directorial debut of Marius Markevicius that stars Bel Powley. The coming-of-age drama set in 1941 during Stalin’s brutal dismantling of the Baltic region just had its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Vertical is eyeing an early 2019 theatrical release. Powley plays Lina, a young Lithuanian artist arrested by the Soviet secret police and deported with her mother and younger brother to labor camps in Siberia. She finds solace in her art and risks everything to document and draw what she sees in hopes her drawings will shed light upon Stalin’s terror. Martin Wallström, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Jonah Hauer-King, Sophie Cookson, James Cosmo and Sam Hazeldine also star. Ben York Jones penned the script, adapted from Ruta Sepetya’s novel, and Sorrento Productions, Tauras Films and Twilight Merengue Studios produced. The deal was negotiated by Vertical’s Rich Goldberg,...

Longtime actor and former child star Sean Astin is not a fan of watching horror movies.
“That sensation of jumping because somebody's hand comes through the window to grab your throat -- I don't like that,” he tells Et, which is a bit ironic considering he’s starring in two back-to-back horror projects released in October.
First is Dead Ant, a campy film about killer ants, which Astin says is an homage to those ‘70s B-list horror movies like Empire of the Ants, that premiered at the 2017 ScreamFest in Hollywood, California. The film sees the actor playing an aging rocker with an insane mullet and bad tattoos, who doesn’t quite make it to the end. “I wish I had more time to play with the rest of the group,” Astin says of the cast, which includes Tom Arnold and Jake Busey, but he had fun playing up the Los Angeles music scene. “I felt strangely...

Tom Arnold never thought he’d be in a movie called “Dead Ant,” but life is just as unpredictable as the peyote smoked by characters in the film. “We worked a lot with the green screen, so you’re taking a leap of faith,” Arnold told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “Dead Ant” is a comedy-horror movie that follows an early ’90s hair band as they head out to the desert to play the popular Coachella Music Festival — except, they’re actually playing at the knock-off concert “No-Chella,” because band manager Danny (Arnold’s character) couldn’t get them into the real thing.

Well, the film Dead Ant seems to merge things I love, such as metal, gore, and giant insects (and even sneaks in some Twin Peaks love with the appearance of Michael Horse). It is a bit of a disappoint that the giant insects are played mostly for laughs, but you gotta take what you can get at this point.
