Element Pictures is coming off the back of yet another buzzy awards season with its absurdist comedy Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, notching 11 Oscar nominations and coming home with four wins, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. But just when it feels like the company’s trajectory can’t get higher, the Irish-Anglo production, distribution and exhibition banner is hitting the Croisette this year with no less than three films in the Cannes official selection. Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, which reunites him with his long-term writing partner Efthimis Fillipou and Poor Things stars Stone and Willem Dafoe, will compete for the Palme d’Or, while French actor Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says and I Am Not a Witch director Rungano Nyoni’s sophomore feature On Becoming A Guinea Fowl are both screening in the Un Certain Regard section.

Being recognized as one of the most talented young actresses of the 21st century, Mia Goth presents horror as her trademark genre. Starting from A Cure for Wellness (2016), the actress has been proving that she impeccably fits in the genre, continuing the fruitful trend of her career with the incredibly successful 2022 slashers X and Pearl.
However, there is a lesser-known 2023 horror movie, where Goth fully reveals her potential as the genre’s queen. Despite its sophisticated nature, it definitely appears to be a must-watch for all fans of the actress and for the most curious cinephiles.
Set in an isolated island resort, it focuses on the married couple, the writer in a creative crisis and his unhappy wife, coming there on a vacation. They meet Goth’s mysterious Gabi, who starts to show them the other side of the resort alongside her husband.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967, she began her career in Australia as a teenager with roles in Bush Christmas (1983) and BMX Bandits (1983). Her performance in Dead Calm (1989) would grab the attention of Hollywood, and Tom Cruise, casting her in her breakout role as neurologist Dr. Claire Lewicki, in Days of Thunder (1990).
Her trajectory to establishing herself among Hollywood’s A-List continued as she starred alongside Cruise again in Far and Away (1992), mastered her comedic acting chops as an aspiring television personality in Gus Van Sant’s black comedy, To Die For (1995), and portrayed another doctor in the superhero film Batman Forever (1995), opposite Val Kilmer.

The main slate announcement was made early Thursday morning, confirming many suspicions, and offering much excitement for hardcore cinephiles. For those with more mainstream tastes—and an eye toward what will still be in play come next year’s Oscars—here are some highlights.

Two of the newest heartthrobs in Hollywood’s entertainment industry, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan, are once again making rounds on the internet. Though this time, it isn’t because of their remarkable onscreen performances, but rather because of all the rumors indicating there’s more going on between them than what the eyes can see.

While reports about the pair’s rumored relationship have been swirling in the air since March this year, Keoghan seems to have further added fuel to that already raging fire. This comes after the Masters of the Air actor left a rather flirty comment on his rumored girlfriend’s most recent steamy photos on her social media in Kim Kardashian’s Skims lingerie.

Private Investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell) wears a black suit for all occasions and never drives anything but his classic Corvette. He’s unflappably calm, prefers to listen rather than talk, and absolutely doesn’t know how to let a case go once he’s started working on it—especially if it involves a missing woman. Watching Sugar, it’s as if one of Humphrey Bogart or Glenn Ford’s hardboiled gumshoes stepped straight out of their smoky, monochrome realm and into our full-color world of smartphones and social media.
Though Sugar is set in modern-day L.A., the series finds him tasked with a case suited to his anachronistic sensibilities. In fact, it’s one cribbed straight from The Big Sleep: A rich, reclusive movie producer, Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), hires Sugar to track down his wild-child granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). Yorgos Lanthimos is back from awards season with Kinds of Kindness. The upcoming anthology is from the director of such faves as Poor Things, The Favourite, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Lobster, etc etc etc. He's made a lot of faves, basically. The offcial synopsis reads as such, Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. Poor Things stars Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe reunite with Yorgos Lanthimos for the first look at Kinds of Kindness.
A teaser for the “triptych fable,” previously titled And, gave fans a first look at the film, which in its official synopsis follows “a man without a choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
“This is it. The moment of truth,” says Stone in a voiceover as a purple sports car drifts. The 45-second teaser gives glimpses at each of the film’s stars, many of whom are previous Lanthimos collaborators — Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.

It’s fun to think that when Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos were on the Oscar campaign trail during the early months of the year, they already had a new project under their belts. “Kinds of Kindness” marks the third straight feature collaboration between actress and director (and Searchlight Pictures) after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which won their leading performers, Olivia Colman and Stone, Best Actress Oscars.
The first teaser for this new joint was released this morning and it’s one of those 46-second clips that tells you absolutely nothing but flashes a ton of cool imagery in your face. Fans of Arthouse Emma Stone Sicko Cinema™, have I got good news for you. Coming off her second Oscar win, the "La La Land" star is currently in the midst of shooting what's sure to be a strange and twisted spin on the Western genre in the shape of Ari Aster's "Eddington." But before we lay our eyes on the "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" director's latest oddity, Stone herself will reunite with her "Poor Things" and "The Favourite" helmer Yorgos Lanthimos for a new project.
Titled "Kinds of Kindness," Stone and Lanthimos finished shooting their new film near the tail-end of 2022, which is the reason it's already good to go so soon after "Poor Things" once again stirred up the "Are Sex Scenes Necessary?" discourse. Yorgos Lanthimos is examining the kinds of cruelty in his latest film “Kinds of Kindness.”
The feature, which was originally titled “And”, marks Lanthimos’ eighth film and reunites the auteur with two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone following her recent “Poor Things” Best Actress win. Stone previously garnered her first Oscar after starring in Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
While the plot details for the Searchlight Pictures release remain elusive, we do know that “Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide. Stone stars alongside her “Poor Things” co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
“It’s great to be working again with Emma,” Lanthimos told The Guardian about the project. “It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much.” The duo are next set...

The planet might be on fire, but at least Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have found one another. The "La La Land" actor and "The Lobster" filmmaker didn't exactly read as an obvious pairing, yet they're already on their way to joining Hepburn-Cukor, Stewart-Hitchcock, and De Niro-Scorsese in the ranks of all-time great actor-director duos. After a couple of feature films ("The Favourite" and "Poor Things") and a short ("Bleat"), the one thing we can say for certain is that we'll never know precisely what these two are going to get up to next.
Speaking of which, we're only days removed from Stone's surprise Best Actress Oscar win for "Poor Things," yet we've already got a release date for her next collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo will return in just a few months with "Kinds of Kindness," a film that they shot back in late 2022 which was previously going by the (impressively Seo-unfriendly) title "And.

It is no secret that Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ career has been evolving quite nicely since his hit film The Lobster. The Greek director has gained numerous major awards and nominations, and with his recent hit film, Poor Things, winning several Academy Awards, we are pleased to confirm that his upcoming movie, Kinds of Kindness, will be released later this year – on June 21, 2024.
Unlike his two previous films, The Favourite and Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness will be based on an original script written by Lanthimos himself and Efthimis Filippou. It is going to be an anthology film, which the director himself described as “a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story”. The actors in question include Lanthimos’ favorite collaborator, Emma Stone, as well as Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie,...

Less than a week after “Poor Things” won four Academy Awards include Best Actress for Emma Stone, distributor Searchlight Pictures has announced the release date for his next film, “Kinds of Kindness“: It will open in theaters June 21, 2024. A limited release will kick off the launch for Lanthimos’ eighth feature film, with a wider nationwide opening to follow.
The June 21 release almost certainly means that “Kinds of Kindness” will be ready for Cannes 2024 — and will potentially be his first feature to premiere on the Croisette since 2017’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” His past Oscar winners “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” both went the way of Venice. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival runs May 14 through May 25.
“Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide, though plot details remain scarce so far.

Ah, Y2K. The millennium bug that induced widespread fear over the possibility of a worldwide infrastructure crash once 2000 arrived becomes infectious fodder for a teen comedy infused with horror and nostalgia. Armed with a pitch-perfect, game-for-anything ensemble and great practical effects behind the carnage and calamity, A24’s latest offers up the most entertaining, funny-bone-tickling apocalyptic scenario since This Is the End.
Comedian and actor Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the script with writer/producer Evan Winter, makes his directorial debut here. He kicks Y2K off with a potent dose of dial-up nostalgia as it sets the stage for one unpredictable 1999 New Year’s Eve party from hell. Shy teen Eli has an easier time connecting with his unrequited crush Laura (Rachel Zegler) over AOL, despite his extraverted best friend Danny’s constant nudging and encouragement to finally make a move. Armed with liquid courage and a “Y2K” CD mix,...

Yoshida Kota was born 1978 in Tokyo and graduated from Waseda University. He studied filmmaking at the Enbu seminar and gained international recognition with “Yuriko's Aroma” (2010) at festivals like “Nippon Connection”. Different from his last film “Sexual Drive” (2021), he now turns to the severe topic of social welfare and presents a gripping social drama.
On the occasion of the world premiere at “Osaka Asian Film Festival” Yoshida Kota reveals his thoughts behind the script and talks about how to combine vulnerability and dignity on screen.
“Snow Drop” is a courageous movie because it does not shy away from a challenging and unadressed topic. Everyone talks about the ageing Japanese society. There are also more and more movies that adress this “problem” in terms of dementia and eldery care. But it seems to me that most of them stay on a superficial and bold level in telling these stories. Your movie is different.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is nominated for eleven Oscars, including best picture, lead actress and director. The Oscar nominated genre comedy arrives on Hulu today, ahead of the Academy Awards this weekend.
This year’s Oscars ceremony airs on Sunday, March 10.
At the box office, the awards recognition and positive word of mouth drove Poor Things to an incredible $100 million worldwide, a huge success story for arthouse cinema at large.
Emma Stone stars alongside Willem Dafoe in Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth), a Frankenstein-like tale based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo also star.
Lanthimos’ latest tells “the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn.

No two people feel the exact same way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of this year’s Oscar movies. Here's Abe Friedtanzer and Nick Taylor on Poor Things…
Nick: Hello Abe! Congratulations on Poor Things winning the Team Experience Award for Best Picture. I’m glad a film that moves, sounds, and dresses in such an offbeat manner has become such a critical and popular hit. It’s always nice to see weird art winning. That being said, I don’t count myself as a fan of Poor Things, and have a lot of complaints I could throw at its many, many, unapologetic excesses. Still, I like starting these Split Decision panels on notes of praise, and I’d really love to hear what you think of Poor Things.

Hollywood’s biggest night (that isn’t the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards) is coming up, with the 96th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday, March 10. Of course, many Oscar-nominated filmmakers began their careers in independent film. So! This week we’re taking a look back at some of the best Film Independent moments from this year’s Oscar nominees. First up: Poor Things editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis on cutting 2018’s The Favourite.
***
Having just nabbed 10 prizes at the British Independent Film Awards (“BIFA”) and recently nominated for five Golden Globes, Greek editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis’ latest project—unpredictable royal intrigue tragi-comic period piece The Favourite—is making a huge splash as awards season heats up. Mavropsaridis and director Yorgos Lanthimos go way back to the latter’s early commercial work, with Marvropsardis editing all of the critically acclaimed Lanthimos’s feature films to date, including 2015’s The Lobster and 2017’s Film Independent...

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in December. It has since been updated.]
Yorgos Lanthimos’ films look different from each other, but they feel the same. Since the Greek director has made the transition from independent Greek cinema to larger Hollywood productions, the washed-out, largely white palettes and simple trappings of his earliest films have given way to more sumptuous cinematography and staging. Even the frills of thrillers like “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” feel bare-bones compared to his recent embrace of the costume drama with “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which feature alternatively gorgeous and (intentionally!) garish production design and costuming.
But when you look past the budget and the aesthetics of each film, every movie that Lanthimos has made feel like they share a similar cinematic language. The characters in his films tend to communicate through stilted but natural dialogue that often tilts toward deadpan, and hide their cruelty behind politeness and social niceties. And his films are cruel,...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” spans five different major locations — London, Paris, a ship, Alexandria and Lisbon — which meant production designers James Price and Shona Heath had a considerable undertaking ahead of them when they signed on.
Creating Lisbon proved to be one of the biggest jobs for cinematographer Robbie Ryan and even Lanthimos. As Emma Stone’s Bella Baxter departs her black-and-white world of Victorian-era London and Godwin’s (Willem Dafoe’s) home, the movie transitions into a pastel-colored world — there’s a soundstage with a water tank for the scenic sea view, and a giant picturesque backdrop.
Used to filming with natural lighting and exterior shots, Lanthimos and Ryan had to adjust to what they call their most challenging task.
Here the two reflect on working together for the first time and how they collaborated on “Poor Things.”

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, the Dceu era officially wraps up, ushering in a new phase led by James Gunn and his rebranded Dcu cinematic universe. However, not all DC character projects will align with this new universe. Matt Reeves’ dark and gritty Batman-centric stories will exist as standalone “Elseworlds” tales, a decision consistent with Pattinson’s Batman not being part of the Dceu. Pattinson leads as Bruce Wayne, joined by Kravitz as Catwoman, Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Farrell as the Penguin.
While most roles were confirmed earlier, Keoghan’s portrayal of the Joker remains uncertain, despite Reeves confirming his role in the first movie post-release. Though Collider reported Keoghan’s return a year ago, official studio confirmation is still pending. Vanity Fair’s inquiry received no explicit denial from Keoghan, leading fans to speculate on the Joker’s potential minor role in the sequel,...

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu is officially finished and the fans can look forward to a new era under the leadership of James Gunn and his new cinematic universe rebranded as Dcu.
But not all exciting projects based on DC characters will be part of the new cinematic universe. Notably, projects helmed by Matt Reeves that revolve around dark and gritty Batman’s world will be a part of the “Elseworlds” stories; this was a personal choice made by Matt Reeves, which means that practically nothing changed in that aspect since Pattison’s Batman wasn’t a part of the Dceu either.
Robert Pattinson will be portraying Bruce Wayne. Zoë Kravitz will reprise the role of Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, while Andy Serkis will return to take on the character of Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and confidant. Colin Farrell will be returning as the Penguin,...

The Super Bowl is over and that can only mean one thing: There's nothing standing in the way of our next big pop culture event, the Academy Awards ceremony in early March. So what better way for a conscientious and curious film fan to prepare for our version of the big game than by catching up on all the Best Picture nominees by then? Viewers will have their next chance to do so as director Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things," arguably the most idiosyncratic and oddball pick among the dozen nominees, will soon be made available to watch at home.
There are multiple reasons to want to either catch "Poor Things" for the first time or experience the Frankenstein's monster-like vibes all over again. With his outstanding performance in "Saltburn," Barry Keoghan has solidified himself as one of the most exciting and sought-after up-and-coming stars — and it's not just because of that provocative final shot. Sure, the TikTokers were all over "Saltburn" because of its generous helping of full-frontal Keoghan nudity, but the Irish star also delivered a truly unsettling performance as a disturbed student who becomes obsessed with Jacob Elordi's Felix and his upper-class family.
Anyone who followed Keoghan's career prior to "Saltburn" knew he was capable of such feats, especially those who'd seen his equally brilliant portrayal of disturbed teen Martin in 2017's "The Killing of a Sacred Deer." But it's not just the mentally unstable that Keoghan has a knack for playing so well, though that particular talent will no doubt come in handy when the actor has his proper debut as the Joker in Matt Reeves' Batman universe. His friendship with Emma Stone, unleashing new sides of Mark Ruffalo and Colin Farrell, his next film and the limitations of language. Those were just some of the topics that Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos discussed during an onstage interview organized by the British Film Institute (BFI) in London on Wednesday evening.
“I don’t really think of themes themselves,” Lanthimos shared when asked by an audience member what topics and themes he was planning to take on in future movies. “It is more about coming up with the stories and the structures and sensing that there’s something there that I’m interested in.” He also said that it was only “after that that you realize what it is about for yourself [since] for other people it could be about another thing. So it’s hard to say what the themes are.”

Yorgos Lanthimos is an acquired taste. A key figure in the "Greek Weird Wave," he shares Wes Anderson's fondness for deadpan acting, artificial dialogue, and general oddities. However, the worlds and people in Lanthimos' films aren't just quirky, they're often aggressively unpleasant. More than that, they tend to be governed by twisted and bizarre "rules" and social norms. For example, in "The Lobster," all adults are required to have a romantic partner or find one within a short amount of time. Those who fail to do so are turned into an animal of their choice. Likewise, in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," a surgeon is tormented by a teenager with unnatural abilities in retaliation for failing to save the boy's father on the operating table.
It's easy to intellectually appreciate the point Lanthimos is making with his work -- that the "rules" we follow in our own lives...

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Elevated by its consistent visual inventiveness, Chinese writer-director Jianjie Lin’s suspenseful drama “Brief History of a Family” could appear, at first glance, as a clear-cut case of a cunning infiltrator wreaking havoc in an unsuspecting household. Yet the closer we observe, the more it reveals itself as a tale of wish fulfillment for everyone involved. No doubt comparisons to “Saltburn,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” or “The Talented Mr. Ripley” will abound, but what Lin conceived is far more subcutaneous, with a sobering tone and disinterested in building up to a grand plot twist — though the resolution is unexpected.

At the risk of sounding glib, nobody plays a freak quite like Barry Keoghan.
Over the course of his still nascent career, Keoghan has established himself as a performer who thrives at playing outcasts and outsiders, men branded as weirdos by both the audience and the people around them. The Irish actor can play a normal person if he wants — he first gained recognition as the likable young kid who dies a tragic death in “Dunkirk,” and he’s one of the best things about the otherwise disastrous Marvel film “Eternals” — but more off-kilter parts are really where he shines. The guiding star for his film image is the 2017 movie that really first garnered him American recognition, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” In Yorgos Lanthimos’ off-putting and icy thriller, Keoghan plays an awkward young man who inserts himself into the life of a cardiac surgeon (Colin Farrell) and wreaks havoc on his family.
Over the course of his still nascent career, Keoghan has established himself as a performer who thrives at playing outcasts and outsiders, men branded as weirdos by both the audience and the people around them. Unlike the theater, movies don't typically have a long rehearsal process before shooting, but the wildly weird Yorgos Lanthimos likes to create the feeling of a theater troupe in his casts. Lanthimos is known for his unconventional style, and his process is no exception. His thespian approach helps his actors get comfortable with one another and adapt to the director's strange style in a way that they would not have time to do on a typical film set. But what exactly goes on at a rehearsal for movies like his latest triumph, "Poor Things?"
Emma Stone stars in the 2023 adaptation as a mad scientist's experiment who breaks free of men who seek to control her and also explores her newfound sexuality. The "La La Land" actor was also in Lanthimos' last film, his 2019 period drama "The Favourite." Despite Stone's reputation, she too is at "The Lobster" director's mercy during rehearsal.

Films are available. Then they aren't. Entire film series can be accessed on one day, and then are nowhere to be found the next. The tides roll in, the tides recede. The sun rises, the sun sets. So it goes with streaming.
Thanks to the Writers Strike of 2023, and the revelation that exclusive in-studio streaming services aren't an entirely viable business model, it's become more important than ever to keep tabs on what might be available on notable services in any given week. Sadly, no streaming service purports to be a permanent archive of film and TV, and even the most deeply branded properties are now being shopped around outside of their home studios; to some, it may feel strange that "Merry Little Batman" debuted on Prime Video rather than the expected Warner Bros.-owned Max streaming service. It seems that the most logical way streaming services can move forward...

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things” is more logistically challenging and sweeping in scale than anything the director has ever attempted, but at its core, it’s still as eccentric in its humor and as unsettlingly poignant as earlier Lanthimos works like “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “The Lobster.” A riff on the “Frankenstein” story in which a young suicide victim (Emma Stone) is brought back to life by a mad scientist (Willem Dafoe) who enters the world to find her place in it, “Poor Things” combines elements of horror, black comedy, fantasy, and period romance.
While the scope of the film, which traverses several countries and is populated by extravagantly costumed extras and lavishly appointed sets, is huge, the crew Lanthimos used to tell his tale wasn’t. “We would just focus on the important stuff,” Lanthimos told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It would just be the camera,...
