[7.6] The island of Dr. ... !
cjonesas31 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The city was fine, the island not so much! They're all pretty, deranged in various degree and "civilized", but can we please get back to the city?

You seriously don't want us to have 10 episodes of a final season on an island?!

By the way, the scenes with the Dobermans not at all credible; once they get a scent, they will follow it up to the end. Nobody will believe that it is possible to hide from those ultra-intelligent dogs behind a log, 4-5 meters away! Even with a dead animal nearby, they still get your scent, will bark the hell out and get you in a micro-second...

A lot of action without much actually happening
Orphan Black is back for one final season, and the premiere is mostly solid but has some faults that will hopefully be resolved as the season progresses. As an episode, it is solid but forgettable, as there is a lot of action and moving around but not many events of actual, lasting significance to the plot. I would have appreciated a little bit less running around in the woods and a little bit more development of the relationships between the many new characters and organizations that showed up out of the blue in the last couple of episodes. The show-runners are holding back any and all information about these people, presumably to hook the viewer until a later date when it will be revealed. The problem is, we have not yet been given any reason to care about who and what they are, so the ploy does not work. One character claims that they hold all the answers, but the first three seasons already gave us almost all the answers, which means that these new story lines can't help but feel tacked on. I sincerely hope that the show proves me wrong by developing the relationships between these groups and tying them in to the history we already know in a natural, seamless way. Until Orphan Black does these things, this will continue to be the weakest string of episodes in the show's history. I have a moderate degree of faith that it will happen, but I hope it's soon.

So did I hate this episode? No. Was I a bit underwhelmed by it? Yeah, that would be fair to say. But, I'm still looking forward to the rest.
