Strong episode with some bleak moments
snoozejonc11 March 2021
Phillip and Elizabeth continue to work their sources whilst Mischa makes a phone call.

This is a strong but bleak episode with a number of scenes that are well made but feel like a kick in the teeth for all involved.

The story is a mixture of character and plot focus. It is mainly character driven, but one plot revelation has a massive impact on the characters, particularly Phillip.

I agree with the June 2017 review of this episode regarding the storytelling. It has been slow burning for quite a few episodes and this one contains a sucker punch that feels like it's going to kick off a lot of tension. How long can certain characters do the things they are doing on blind faith in their cause? What will be the tipping point? Plus the plot threads with Mischa and Stan's new girlfriend, depending on how they unfold (and what certain characters find out) are building towards potential dynamite.

For me the scenes with Paige are far from soap opera. They are realistic portrayals of how it might feel for a young person put in that position by her parents. As a father of two girls I found it very sad to contemplate.

I agree the tone of the series has changed and it feels less like a suspenseful thriller and more like a psychological drama, but it's still being done very well.

All production values and performances are as strong as ever with Alex Oserov, Frank Langella, Holly Taylor and Matthew Rhys all superb.

For me it was an 8.5/10, but I like to round upwards.

That Slave Stones moment
pablovete7 July 2022
It's a serie I started to watch after Ukraine-Russia war and all changes after that . The way you see a cola war as the best solution But the characters who was quite little evolved and too much worried about borin' Paige started .:: and then that Slave Stones song moment was a 10.

"It's us."

It's episodes like this where all the slow-burn storytelling really pays off, and you can appreciate what a great, well-constructed, clever, subtle show The Americans is. It's a great point to reach midway, too: things we've seen so far come to a head in a way that will surely change how the characters behave moving forward. The end goal isn't obvious, either, which is certainly more than most series can say.

The Americans is going into neutral!
mm-3913 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Americans is going into neutral! More about relationships. Paige is having trouble adjusting to being a spy. Paige has trouble with who she is. Paige has guilt over Stan Beeman F B I agents son who Paige is spying on! Liz and Phil have trouble dealing with Paige. Stan has trouble with the C I A blackmailing an associate. Phil find out Henry is actually smart ie computer smart. No way Henry would join the K G B I bet Henry would tell Stan. My guess. Phil and Liz find out there mission has misconceptions. Phil's son is searching for dad while getting out of the Soviet Union. Interesting watching how the Soviet Union functions. Lotus episode sounds more like a spy soap opera than a spy show. The Americans for season 5 is slowly slipping into neutral. Lotus 1-2-3 is a blah type of episode. Nothing special.
