Ramsay Brothers are the pioneers of the horror movie genre in the 1980s and have more than 30 horror movies under their belt. Shaitaan Haveli is a great comic tribute to these legends. This web series has all the ingredients used in a B-grade horror movie of the 80s and 90s. However, Varun Thakur smartly makes it more than a tribute to the horror films. It covers other topics like nepotism and opportunism in Bollywood, poor treatment of women in the industry, and other issues within the industry. Although, it is not a perfect laugh riot, but certain characters like Mahua (chudail) has some of the best lines that keep you entertained. If you are looking for some unique content add Shaitaan Haveli to your list. Absolutely Recommended.

Shaitaan Parody

Shaitaan Haveli's is comedian Varun Thakur's parody of the horror movies of the 70's. Is it as entertaining as Varun's stand up acts is the big question.
Post Biswa, Sumukhi Suresh, Varun Thakur is the latest comedian to get his own show on Amazon Prime. The show is an out and out comedy. The story revolves around Rahul(Varun Thakur), who is a struggling actor. He lands a supporting role in washed out director Hariman's latest movie. Hariman used to be a successful director, but his movies have been bombing lately. In a bid to save his career & have one last shot at success he convinces a gangster to lend him money for one last movie project. He promises the gangster that he will make a successful movie with his son Monty in the lead. Lured by this offer, the gangster agrees to bankroll Hariman's horror movie. A series of mishaps happen at the shoot. Several people are murdered on the shoot. Monty acting talents or rather the lack of it worries Hariman no end. It now upto Rahul to save the day.
While it is not one of the most rib tickling comedies we have seen, it surely is entertaining. Hemant Kumar who plays Monty - the muscled bimbo with a Salman Khan hangover is mad funny. Zahid Ali who plays Mukesh - a pot bellied has been actor is funny. Varun Thakur is convincing in his role. But, he doesn't have the best punchlines. Monty's Salman Khanesque antics will keep you amused. Pippa Hughes who plays Julia - Monty's gf & also acts in the movie, adds some romantic flavor. Kanchan Pagare(Gangu) is funny. The rest of the cast fails to make an impression.
The jokes are not as funny as funny as one would expect from a Varun Thakur show. There was ample scope for funny scenes & evoke peals of laughter from the viewers, but the writers fail to do so. While the jokes failed to impress, we binged on the show, thanks to the script.
The show is a typical masala entertainer of a web series. Do not watch it with high expectations as far as the comedy department is concerned. It is a good show to watch, post a stressful day.
One of the best series in its genre in Indian series landscape
sanzeevdahal10 May 2021
The series probably is misunderstood for what it is. It's a parody of the classic Ramsey brother horror movies. The series is self-aware of what it is, and goes meta all the time. On the 1st episode, the conversation between Harriman and his secretary Gangu already lays the groundwork that this series is a homage to classic horror films, and that general audience might not understand it. It's not a Community or It's Always Sunny, by any means, but for an Indian series in this specific genre, it is quite an accomplishment. The show has issues; specifically, the story is not quite coherent. The characters, however, are well-written for what the series is all about, and almost everyone gets a chance to shine. The series is an undiscovered gem, I think.
Extremely Cheesy (but the nice kind)

This is an extremely hilarious take by a millennial on the 80s Ramsay films. I literally rolled on the floor laughing on many scenes. This also has some seriously good acting by cast members. I binge watched the show...
Give it a try. It starts a bit slow might be annoying as well but catches up from episode 2-3 and transcends into a super fun ride. The main ghost and his deputy are extremely hilarious.

One of the best hindi comedies

Completely hilarious.... specially for the 80s kids who saw the Ramsay movies (it was a different time then... ).
I generally agree to critics reviews but i feel they have got this one way wrong with average ratings.
it is definitely cheesy -- but you know that after reading the title and opening credits.
I watched this twice ...
Varun Thakur keep up the good work
Quite entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
Well first of all, kudos to the guy who came with the episode names. "Chudail ki maa ki Shoot" & "Tu jaanta hai mera Purvaj kaun hai?" are some of the hilarious episode names which aren't only funny to hear but also explain what's in the each episode to a large extent.
The writers made sure that everything about & in this Web Series is a parody, even the episode descriptions.
Plot-wise, Shaitaan Haveli has all the makings of a low-budget B-grade horror film: A Super Dumb but Muscular Lead (who sounds and acts exactly like Bhai), A struggle karne wala Varun Thakur, A Hot Gori ladki, A Nakhre Karne Wali daily soap actress, An Old Actor who thinks he's still a "Chocolate Boy", A Sasta Director and uska DOP, A Chudail, A Random godforsaken 'haveli', Blood sprays jaise ki Holi chalu ho, Unnecessary sexual innuendos, A poornima ki deadline too.
I could relate with Hariman's desperation for new content as a filmmaker to a very deep level lol. Dard hi dard hai. Loved Gangu's "Ready Sir" accent. Monty was a delight to watch, I'd jump up every time he came in the shot. *WE WANT A SPINOFF SERIES ON MONTY PLEASE*. And Chandaal tera naam sachme Chutiya hona chahiye tha, Mahua jaise cutie chudail ko ignore karke woh Prarthana ke peeche gaya. (I laughed my ass off when Mahua dressed up like a hippie). Also, Varun and Julia, KISS ALREADY NA!
Visually, Shaitaan Haveli does a good job of bringing alive the aesthetic of a B-grade low-budget horror movie: from the color grading, the vintage fonts in the opening credits, the nostalgic early 90s retro background score, to the waiting-to-be-memefied comic expressions of the scary characters. The lighting in some of the night scenes was just superb. Loved, how the camera movement and direction was also parody-d to a good extent.
It's everything a parody could be and should be. It's clichéd, it's entertaining and the humor aspect is spot on, especially during moments when the characters break the 4th wall. Also, loved the frequent meme and tv show references ("Hold the door" and "Haveli pe aana ha" were my favorite). And, if a Zombie Apocalypse ever happens, I'm definitely going to use that Besen aur Tel wala Bhajiya attack.
In conclusion, very entertaining as a parody. Beyond the parody? Not so much probably but you definitely won't regret binge watching it. My score: 8.1

Had great fun watching this series
dummyperson-386879 May 2020
The series is a nice parody of 80s and 90s hindi horror movies. Had fun watching it. Probably eight episodes were too many and it could have been wrapped in 5-6 episodes, but that's okay.
Overall this series is a great entertainer and definitely watchable.
Hilarious and bingeworthy.

The show parodies the horror movies of the 80's and does such a good job at it. It is cheesy and outrageous and a lot of fun. I watched it twice and enjoyed it immensely both times. It is an easy show to watch, perfect for binge-ing. I want a season 2.
More unnecessary scenes than the horror films they are based on.
petrolheadpup28 August 2018
What would have been a 20-30 minutes clip is just stretched to an annoying level for 7-8 episodes. Complete waste of a good idea with bad writing and bad dialogues. An average viewer will be bored in the first 10 minutes. The show doesn't hold attention.
Hilarious and some horror
