You must make hard choices, that's what it takes to be a leader Melanie made sure Layton understood that. I like Ben and miles together.

Hard choices

The characters going round make the wheels go round.

I love how this episode builds on Pike's assessment of Layton last episode.
Pike called Layton an Idealist, lacking in fortitude to make the difficult, grey decisions.
Melanie saw that idealism, too... and likely as a weakness... She knew that she would have to forfeit control over her child, Snowpiercer, like every parent who has to let their child go, but she knew that she needed to leave it in the hands of someone capable of defending it against all comers....
And so she risked having Layton learn the weight and moral ambiguity that comes with being a strong leader.
What a great episode, all around.
Also, guy giving the 3/10 in the comments and calling the show "abolute nonsense" stated "why didn't he just walk one carriage further down and save his friends..."
well, gee, what a stupid plot hole... Ern... nope....
That was clearly explained in the episode that only the locations that were denoted with a J-link had decoupling capability.... Think about it... the Folgers and the Jackboots were gathered in 1 car, why release 7 cars? Wasting 6 cars.... Because the ability to separate was limited to only certain cars...
This is a show that doesn't explain each tiny detail, it assumes licence on behalf of the viewer... said 3/10 reviewer is clearly not who this show was aimed at...
Perhaps he/she/they would prefer a running narration.

Warning: Spoilers
Melanie , gives Layton what is needed for the Tailies and 3rd class to get more control. However to get it Layton has to let a group of friends die. Melanie made sure he learned what she had known all along that running Snowpiercer is not a job for the weak and soft hearted!
[6.2] Reversal of fortune ver.9
cjonesas15 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 9: A more intense episode with a good flow, semi enthralling atmosphere divided between the Group, the Tail and the anarchists, some generic good to bad acting, some nonsense as the very standard of the show, fillers for good measure, complete control of the train, tripping over the ducts, reversal of fortune for some, soft decisions that look hard and a Layton who badly needs a haircut!
What a stupid ending

Warning: Spoilers
There could have been decent drama in the episode as Layton has to make a choice as to whether to save a carriage full of his associates or cut them off. Surely he could just walk down one carriage and uncouple the next carriage so he can save his friends? An absolute nonsense.
