The production designer shared: ” ‘Kaala Paani’ is very close to my heart, to pick any particular scene would be a cruelty to other scenes. I would say that the final look and feel that we achieved with the creation of the interiors of a Japanese bunker is something I am very proud of.”
“Andaman has World War Two-era Japanese bunkers scattered around the island to keep a close watch on the Indian Ocean. They were built on higher grounds to watch over as much area as possible. When we set about creating the interiors of the bunker in the studio,...

A decade after scoring a major hit with “Raanjhanaa,” Indian director-producer Aanand L. Rai is returning to its universe with “Tere Ishk Mein.”
“Raanjhanaa,” an intense Hindu-Muslim romantic drama, was the Hindi-language debut of Tamil cinema star Dhanush and featured chartbusting music by Oscar-, BAFTA-, Grammy- and Golden Globe-winner A.R. Rahman.
While keeping the plot under wraps, Rai told Variety, “When we were working on the ‘Tere Ishk Mein’ script, we realized that we are catching on to the same aggression. And in terms of genre, it’s falling in that genre of tragedy and I said, it’s actually belonging to that world. They’re not similar stories, but they have a similar heartbeat. We were getting the same feeling what we were getting when we were working on ‘Raanjhanaa.’ I said, let’s start belonging to that world.”

Do you remember your first horror movie? I do. I can remember how petrified I was like it was yesterday.
And I’ll never come close to a TV set broadcasting ants racing, thanks to Poltergeist. I’m still too terrified of being sucked in.
My little brother was terrified of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and would cry whenever his name was mentioned. And my son turned sheet white when he first saw Vanessa rip her face off in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
The point is that we’ve all been scared by something on TV or in theaters. Although, some of us seem to enjoy it more than others.

As horror fans, nothing compares to the thrill of a window blown open by the wind in complete darkness. Candles flickering out can make us shudder.

When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.
"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.
Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.
"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

As was the tendency in the last years, South Indian films continued to dominate the box office in 2022, with “Rrr” and “Vikram” being some of the highlights, and the former actually getting international recognition, as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu highlights. In another international success for Indian cinema, Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” was shortlisted for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, while Pan Nalin documentary “All That Breathes” won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition in Sundance, before it was also shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for the 95th Academy Awards. If you add to all these the fact that local movies seem to find more space in international festivals, it seems that finally Indian movies are getting the recognition they deserve. The feat can be attributed to both an “opening” from the West towards...

Filmmaker-producer Anand Gandhi, who is known for his films like ‘Ship of Theseus’, ‘An Insignificant Man’ and ‘Tumbbad’, has said that the Kannada sensation movie ‘Kantara’ celebrates toxic masculinity and narrow-mindedness.
Both the films share quite a few things in common such as both are rooted in folk tales, have been breakout hits that nobody really expected and present a story from particular regions of the states of Maharashtra (‘Tumbbad’) and Karnataka (‘Kantara’). But despite these similarities, Anand feels that the two films are largely different in their tone and the message that they wish to convey.
Taking to his Twitter handle on Saturday, Anand, who served as the creative producer on ‘Tumbbad’, wrote, “‘Kantara’ is nothing like ‘Tumbbad’. My idea behind ‘Tumbbad’ was to use the horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. ‘Kantara’ is a celebration of these (sic).”
However, the comment made by Gandhi has stirred a debate on Twitter.

Gandhi says his new effort, about artificial intelligence (AI), explores the "legal frameworks" that have to be put in place between "organic species" and the "cloud-based intelligence system". He says the advent of AI has changed a lot of things and the series talks about the co-existence of the two.

New Delhi, Feb 23: Bollywood horror is evolving beyond simple tales of ghosts, haunted houses and possession stories. Film makers are learning to give a spin to the tale. New sub-genres are being created blending horror with comedy, romance, mythology and more.
Horror comedies, Horror films with social message, and mythological twist to supernatural lore are all plot ideas that fall under the broader genre of horror.
What's more, A-list stars are joining the horror bandwagin. For long, the genre was all about B and C-list actors, given the low production costs. The scene briefly changed when Ram Gopal Varma made Bhoot, casting Ajay Devgn, Urmila Matondkar, Fardeen Khan and Rekha in the film. However, that was a one-off case. The horror genre has mostly been about modest cast.

You were just beginning to get excited about new-age Bollywood horror after cutting-edge stuff as Stree and Tumbbad. Then came Laxmii, and now Durgavati -- as rude reminder that Bollywood horror still has some way to go.
Durgavati, crafted almost frame to frame from the 2018 Telugu-Tamil horror drama Bhagmathie, comes across as cliched melodrama more than next-level scare fest as it tries peddling horror with a message. The outcome is neither scary nor relevant commentary, for the societal ills the film tries highlighting are far too familiar as subject material on the mainstream screen to leave an impact.
Writer-director G Ashok's narrative starts off with a dozen-odd rare idols being stolen in a span of around six months, even as brutal killings take place. Minister Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi), who is under suspicion, announces he will nab the culprits or retire from politics.
Cbi officer Satakshi Ganguly (Mahie Gill) is given charge of the case.

Bad-apple politicians put the squeeze on a hapless secretary in this tired pile of vengeful ghost mayhem
Censorship may have been an issue in the past, but it’s striking how few horror films Indian commercial cinema has produced relative to those from other genres. Things are changing, however, as younger, DVD-schooled creatives have taken up the challenge of splicing local traditions with spooky tropes, yielding such recent highlights as the sprightly chiller Stree and the darker-hued Tumbbad.
The Blumhousification of Bollywood continues with this big, dumb haunted-house runaround, adapted by writer-director G Ashokfrom Bhaagamathie, his own regional hit of 2018 – though adaptation, in this case, has meant not much more than cranking the dial to 11. Initially, we’re in House of Cards country, watching corrupt politicos – and a Central Bureau of Investigation officer who makes Priti Patel look chummy – who are plotting to besmirch one of their few honest colleagues.

From a very young age, I was writing stories. Even then, as I looked at the world I realized all we do is share stories. The one thing I kept noticing was patterns in human behavior and the diverse stories that originated from it.

Despite horror’s thematic binding to the world’s most prominent fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my top genre films from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but in 2018? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – and a damn fine one at that.

The visual imagery of this film is incomparable. Perhaps Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a particularly anxious night, would think up the visual language of Tumbbad. Raging and divine, Tumbbad looks like a universe that God created and forgot to put on the human map.
Feverish and fertile, this is a work of luminous lunacy. A parable on greed, lust and lustful greed this magical mystical film weaves layer after layer of drama based on illusion, subterfuge and self-delusion.

Fantastic Fest 2018 played host to an amazing array of films from all over the world, including Tumbbad, a timeless tale of greed and the demons we must face in our lives, both figuratively and literally. A truly haunting and ambitious film set in a remote village in India, Tumbbad impressed me with not only its confidence in world-building, but it also manages to explore some universal themes with its slight fairy tale bent that feels akin to the early films from Guillermo del Toro.

For 2018, Fantastic Fest played host to over 100 horror, sci-fi, and action-themed feature and short films, and Daily Dead had the opportunity to see numerous titles while in Austin for all the movie-related festivities. For today’s review round-up, here are my thoughts on the supernatural-driven tale of Indian horror, Tumbbad, the psycho-sexual thriller Cam, and Winston Azzopardi’s survival horror film (with a twist), The Boat.
Tumbbad: I feel slightly uncultured, but Tumbbad from directors Adesh Prasad and Rahi Anil Barve is my first foray into Indian genre filmmaking (save for some over-the-top clips from some ’80s movies I viewed in passing while at various Drafthouses over the years), but based on their efforts here, I’m an instant fan, and I hope Tumbbad leads to more projects for this directorial team, because they both prove that they have the chops to deliver lavish, concept-heavy themes without sacrificing all the...

Screamfest is set to descend upon the City of Angels early in October, intent on littering the streets with devils and all manner of horror and terror. The festival has announced the first wave of titles playing at the festival. There will a ten year anniversary screening of Splinter, which premiered at the festival in '08. Indian horror flick Tumbbad is also playing at the festival. Other than The Golem from the Paz brothers (Jeruzalem) I'm not picking up on a lot of recognizable titles here, but then I'm not an outright horror guy either. They also announced that the great Lin Shaye will be this year's festival ambassador. A common face in the horror genre for decades it will be a pleasure...

While oceans may divide us, horror brings the haunts of countless upbringings together with harmonious understanding. Cry genre staleness? You’re not searching hard enough. South Korean filmmaker Jero Yun’s “Beautiful Days” has been announced as the opening title of the Busan International Film Festival, Korea’s biggest film festival.
Starring Lee Na-young, “Beautiful Days” depicts the story of a woman who abandons her husband and child to escape North Korea for a better life abroad. Martial arts drama, “Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy,” by Hong Kong’s Yuen Woo-ping will close the festival.
“‘Beautiful Days’ sees the dissolution and restoration of a family, and also that its subject is very timely,” said festival director Jay Jeon.
For its twenty third edition, the Busan film festival has selected 323 films from 79 countries. That includes 115 world premieres and 25 international premieres.
The festival’s Gala Presentation section screens only three films this year. They are world premieres of Stanley Kwan’s “First Night Nerves” and Zhang Lu’s “Ode to the Goose,” and Tsukamoto Shinya’s “Killing.
